I've had every Minutemen recording since sometime in the early 1990s and have most of them basically memorized. I don't think this band or anyone in it can be considered underrated. Their brilliance is widely recognized around the world, and lives on, and Watt in particular has gone on to a great and varied career. They were never destined for Taylor Swift or Gaga levels of popularity. That doesn't make them underrated.

This is my best attempt at writing down the lyrics, as they're clearly different from the Pavement version: You wanted it, the priceless sword Before she's back you close the door You wanted it, the priceless sword Before she's back you close the door I see it all there, I see it behind you It's behind your southern mind It's so new Coronel called and he wants to be All by himself beside the sea The coronel called, wants to be Beside himself, beside the sea I see it all there, I see it behind you It's behind your southern mind And it's so new Kick the can, and he kick the sand Kick it in the face of another man Kick the can, and he kick the sand Kick it in the face of another man And I see it there, I seen it behind you It's behind your southern mind And it's so new And it's so new

Anybody know where this video was shot? Looks a little like the Van Nuys Dam. The Minutemen were from San Pedro, so it’s plausible, although it’s got to be a 1.5 to 2 hour drive or more.

Saw the Lips with Richard Davies at Moe’s (now Neumo’s) in Seattle around this time and became a fan of the Lips and an even bigger fan of Davies. Great combination!

I saw The Minutemen so many times around L.A./ So Cal… Was this the show where the incredibly drunk woman got on stage, stripped naked & danced? That was a wild show. After the show we were worried about her so we gave her a ride to her friends house and some clothes (she lost hers). It’s 2024 now and I’m 60 now so my memory is foggy… The show I’m referencing could have been from early 1985… Who knows… All I know is that The Minutemen were such a great band. Dennis was a beautiful person, musician and soul. He was always willing to talk music, guitars and politics at their shows with us when we’d see him. #RIP

D. Boon once had an encounter at work in which his boss refused to let him listen to the local jazz/soul radio station because it would play songs by Black musicians. Boon wanted to quit his job but needed the income so he wrote the song “This Ain’t No Picnic” (which appears on Double Nickels on the Dime) in response to his employer’s racist attitude.

1991, The year punk broke. I found this single looking thru my old CDs, this song remained in my mind, a permanent space. I lost most of my interest in the Lips not too long after this...in a way, so bittersweet.

Such an awesome version of the classic B.O.C. song, "The Red and The Black"! Thanks for sharing. I had the good fortune of hanging out with Mike Watt at THIS club, called Club Lingerie, back in 2003 2004-ish, when I lived down the street, in Hollywood.

Ronald Reagan was the pilot in the film and president during the 80s when he dismantled the power of organinzed labor and unions for the working class. This song was a direct challenge to that. Great music of rebellion was written during the Regan Era. Punk, thrash metal and hip-hop were unified in that they were all villified because of the Christian Right's manufactured hysteria of "Satan hidden in the lyrics!" Back masking. Subliminal messages to take drugs, kill and worship the devil."

The band I was in, Republic of Sherpa, opened for Minutemen at the Anti Club in LA. a couple years later, I saw them open for Meat Puppets and Husker Du at Berkeley Square. Then, I saw them at Al's Bar in LA. I was standing right in front center stage taking it all in. I think that this was the last time they played before the crash. The band was incredibly tight. I think they must have been a huge influence on later bands like Sublime.

You mentioned the anti club brings back memories. I was out front of the anti club in 1983 or 1984. The minutemen were headlining.I had met DBoon in 1970 as we had a mutual friend Dale And we'd go down to Pecks Park in San Pedro and play. First day I met him, he was up in a tree. It's a vivid memory. So here it is 1983 or 1984 and I'm hanging outside the club and he comes outside.I say hey Dennes . Let's say back then, not that many people knew his real name. He looked up at me, a bit taken back I Explained how I knew him. We talked a bit and then he invited me to come in on his behalf free. Who would have known that kid in the tree would have become such an icon for punk rock. RiP Dennes

@@richardlavarini7334 It's great to see the Minutemen videos showing up on KZfaq. Hurley and Watt were such a tight rhythm section, and D. Boon was a working class poet with serious Jazz chops!
