Hello Joy, I recently have committed myself to the entire suzuki corse. I am on book 2 (and I continue using 1 as well). I am self teaching woth videos online paired eith my books, I am unfortunately unable to have lesson, but i have will and detrimination that I've been told is rare and impressive. Nonetheless, many teachers online discourage and put down self-teaching, it's quite frustrating to constantly be told "you think you're learning. But you need a teacher ", even after telling them I am unable to have a teacher. I love my strings and I continue on! ☺ I know I will not be as trained as I could be with a teacher, but I feel that I am making leaps and bounds for only working on the books for a month. I have played by ear for 2 years, I have a nice violin from 1920 France and absolutely love this process. I wanted to thank you for your passionate teaching, willingness to help and provide people woth education that some of us are otherwise unable to access in our locations or times of our life. You encourage, regardless of people having formal lessons. That beings assurance and hopefulness to my heart. I know it is best to be taught by a professional, if i could I would. But this is my life for now and I don't want to allow circumstances to stop my learning. I play 3 to 4 hours a day, sometimes 3 sessions in a day. I do the first 2 suzuki books, the second book i am only 2 pieces in. They are not perfectly but am working hard to perfect each piece and not advance sooner than I should. Patience, slow and steady I feel is key. I also have a sheet of all major scales that I do in forst position daily. I can play through C major scale 1 through 6th position with a play along video on KZfaq. I am becoming more comfortable and learning the positions for the scale. And I feel it has improved by finger ability greatly, and my intonation in becoming better. But I am staying dedicated to the 1st ad 2nd positions for learning. But I am enjoying familiarizing myself with a little bit of all positions. That said, I would be very pleased to hear your opinion on my question- I know you will answer honestly, and I anticipate that ☺ How well can someone self teach if they are truly dedicated and passionate, and to what extent do you feel a personal can succeed/advance by welf teaching? I belive that you would be able to provide an educated estimate of the true limitations and successes a person could reach in self teaching. You seem to love helping others lesrn, not just trying to sell your lessons or whatnot. Many only care about selling lessons, fee are passionate about doing ehat your channel does. God bless you for your work ♥ Great respect and honor to you, lovely lady! 🤗

DearJoy! Hello from Chris E. In usa. I am tuning with a Korg chromatic tuner. Its ivory color and very plain. I can tune by perfect fifths but am lazy! I like to get my instrument in tune fast. Im trying to master vibrato so maybe using perfect fifths would give a better vibrato, maybe even wider. I dont know. All I know is Im matching another teachers vibrato pretty well. I also have been known to use a A 440 tuning fork but not recently. I like equal temprament because that is what I used with electric guitar. My old teacher used a piano and I think it was somewhere near A435. Thanks for your wonderful vidio on tuning to perfect fifths. Please keep posted. Bye for now😅

Thank you! Joy! Have you ever heard of a violin rosin called Suone? It's from 1915 Era. IT was recommended by Wallace Richey a violin teacher. Supposedly the waxed rosin is less dusty and the tone is less harsh. He also recommended acribell violin strings which he claimed are better than #2 grade gut strings. Thank you for the lesson!😅

This makes so much sense. I’ve been a professional guitarist since the 80s so my muscle memory does let the thumb lead against the back of the neck during any position changes in order to keep the hand frame in a consistent position. One thing I’ve noticed in practicing the 3-octave G scale (which I learned from another one of your demonstrations) when descending, if I lighten my finger pressure and press more using the tip rather than sloppily on the finger pad, it’s a lot easier to play the notes clearly and brightly. In other words, more articulation. The other thing I noticed is if I practice my form slowly and intentionally rather than focusing on speed first, the thumb naturally wants to lead as long as I maintain the frame with my fingers. Thank you for your videos, you make it fun to learn😊

Thank you, thank you a thousand times!!!!🫶🏻 Ohh you know, I started to learn Wieniawski no.2 concerto recently and I just have to say that this video have just given me hope! I mean, I haven't played any fingered octaves before and when I tried it for the first time I freaked out... 😵‍💫I might be a beginner to say this, but it seemed to be impossible to play. (Also I have kind of small hands) Sorry for the long comment, I'm just really greatful for this video. ❤❤

Im 52 and haven't had formal lessons for 40 yrs. I'm currently trying to learn on my own. These last 40 yrs I just picked it up occasionally. But now want to play again. Right now I feel I am only playing for my own enjoyment and its a great stress reliever. Soon I want to find an online teacher. I'm in a small town where the school has no orchestra & no teachers I can go to. I would love to play at church or for crowds or events some day

Hello there, thank you for the very helpful videos! I have a question for you regarding something I am struggling a lot and it's very much related to the 1-2 low 2 finger pattern but in reverse.. so it goes like this: if we first need to play open string A, then C, then B, all of a sudden it gets impossible for my fingers because once I place the 2nd finger on C, then it's impossible to bring the first one close to it from the reverse side. When it is: A, B and C, it is easy and all the advice you gave here in this video works perfectly. But when we have to play them in reverse with the open string being first, that's when it gets impossible. Would you be kind enough to give me some advice regarding this ? Also strangely this does not happen on any other pair of closely related fingers like 2 and 3 or 3 and 4, since I can comfortably put 4 then 3, or 3 then 2. But if it comes to putting 2 first and then 1 close to it, it's mission impossible.
