Missing the point. It's a different niche. They don't need to be as popular as those that output a lot of content. Content that is expensive to make. The model is different, they are not trying to replace dnd, but to appeal to a different crowd. They don't need huge numbers to break even. Basically your definition of "successful" is too narrow.

Their was a misunderstanding on the pronunciation of kyrie? They battle over magic pools that when they drink of them they get certain magic abilities (like summoning beings from all over space and time) and they grow wings. Ironically you say think of them as valkyrie which is easy because that's what they are. The Val is a prefix which indicates they are empowered. So val+kyrie. It wasn't hard you just had to interact with the lore at some point.

Speaking as someone who hates WOTC (and Hasbro to an extent but they make Marvel Legends and Transformers so, probably a bit more forgiving than I should be) I see D&D as only one tool for me as a DM, out of many. There's also Alien, One Ring, the fan made Zelda TTRPG "Dangerous to Go Alone!," Cyberpunk Red...if I want some high fantasy zaniness where my players use the mother of all backhands to slap a dragon's head off as their finisher? True story, btw. Then I go with D&D. Old school style Greyhawk adventures? I'll look to Dungeon Crawl Classics. And so on and so forth. What helps too is there's not really any 5e books that interest me much that I cant just get secondhand, the only one left I'm wanting is Xanathar's Guide. That is to say, I love D&D as a game. The company needs a massive shakeup, time will tell if hiring a guy who worked on World of Warcraft will fix things but I'm still refraining from new releases. Especially when the world of indie RPGs exist and keep catching my attention. I might have to look into this Dungeon World you keep mentioning...

Played a lot of different systems with a lot of different levels of number crunching (5E is on the low end of that btw, old time dnd fans find 5E is dumbed down) and I almost never get a complaint about number crunching, it's almost always about the pressure to role play from other players. A lot of people are intimidated and do want to play a game rather than be pressured into improv. I would disagree that most people get into DND because they "want to tell stories." People get into it for a wide variety of reasons and people are into different levels of wargaming and role playing. DND did start from a wargaming group after all. Some people get invested in the narrative, others want a space to mess around, others want a highly strategic game where they can customize their builds, synergize a party, and play a tactical game. I get you prefer the role playing aspect and that's great, you found a game that works for you and I'm glad you love it, but a lot of us like the game aspect and DND is barely number crunchy compared to systems like 3.5, GURPS, Witcher/Cyberpunk, and you don't have to be a dick about it.

I keep pontificating about making KZfaq videos mostly about both 5e and mayhaps pf2. But I have a lot of criticisms about pf2 and I keep wanting to make a video where it's basically me reading off my complaints and why i disagree with the design philosophy of balance over everything else. I also want to talk about how it made me appreciate 5e more by helping me see its pros and put them into words. I still like both systems, but I'm like genuinely afraid of getting doxxed and harrassed by some pf2 fan from kiwifarms or whatever. Because the pf2 online community in particular is full of aholes who can't handle anyone calling pf2 anything less than perfect.

How about people just play what they want... There's a huge spectrum of rules and numbers crunching and how much role playing you do is really up to you and not super dependent on rulesets anyways. Having played games all across the spectrum, liking most of them for different reasons. I'll say that one advantage of a more crunchy system is predictability and strategy. The less that's left to the DM, the more the players can strategize and collaborate. I also enjoy wargames and the more (good) systems you have for combat, and the better you set up your encounters, the more it feels like a game. I've run games for many people with many different interest. Some of them hate wargames and want the story to move on because they're not here for the combat mechanics, they're here for the story and the roleplay. Role play I've also found to be independent of crunchy rules. Half of our sessions have always been characters talking to each other, maybe a roll here or there to determine something.

This was the first PBTA game I ever run, in a one shoot made to introduce the players to a 2d6 mechanics game with 6-, 7 to 9 and 10+. The 12+ is a plus for when I later started a Dungeon World campaign.
@gedece11 күн бұрын
PBTA games are narrative because their whole point is "the narrative triggers the move", which means "in the appropriate circumstances of the tale we are telling we use mechanics to solve the situation". Like every other RPG,.

If I was to rate Freeform games as perfect to did they truly make an effort, this one feels like it was created over a weekend of copious amounts bong usage and good ‘nuff mentality. I feel like he initial concepts have merit but it would benefit strongly from at least a couple of examples of spells, monsters and combat. Too much of it is left vague or nonexistent and that leads to infighting at the table or a complete control monger of a GM. If I wanted to make my own game, I would. Wait, I did.

@@tabletopbro Honestly, it's a bit of a tough read-I certainly bounced off it hard for a few years, until I found myself in a Star Wars themed game of Blades. It's one of my favorite systems these days, but I can't really say that I've found any Forged in the Dark game books that have completely solved the problem of presenting all the moving parts in an easily digestible way. As with most things, I find the best way to learn is by doing! (And if you ever get the urge, hit me up-I'm always down to run a one-shot of CBR+PNK or something.)

I'd say the only thing the game is lacking is a list of general actions or consequences to perform on a 9-. It could be the list of GM moves from Dungeon world. Whenever a character has a partial success or failure use one of the following that fits: - Deal damage or apply a condition - Use up their resources - Use their move against them - Separate the character - Show a downside from their characters - Offer an opportunity with or without a cost - Put someone in the spot

For combat, it's technically in WoDu. "When you attempt something risky, sum 2d6 and add one of your attribute scores, based on the action you’re taking." So roll 2d6+stat, you then roll your damage if you succeed. Take damage from the creature if you fail. And DM decides what happens on a partial succeed, but I like both sides take damage to keep things moving.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend checking out Fantasy World by Alessandro Piroddi and Luca Maiorani. It describes itself as a modern and updated PbtA RPG with a focus on dramatic fantasy (as opposed to dungeon crawling), so something more akin to fantasy novels. One of the things that stand out to me is how damage and injury are completely narrative, though there are mechanics to track the effects of the injuries you've taken (which serve to inform the narrative and your roleplay). All in all, it has its place in the collection of PbtA games on how to play this style of RPG with the hopes of making things clearer and more concrete in areas that were lacking in previous PbtA games.

The SRD has been sitting in my bookmarks for like two years😂 I always mean to check it out but tbh Dungeon World scratches my fantasy PbtA itch well enough
