The Crust of the Western US isn't thinner because it is newer. It is thinner because of the basin and range extension. The "Mississippi" Embayment wasn't filled by the Mississippi. It was filled by the Proto-Ohio river. The Missouri and Mississippi rivers used to flow northwards into Hudson bay via the Paleo-Bell river. The Mississippi River above St Louis is younger than humanity living in North America, about 12,000 years old. The Ancient and now abandoned river valley of the Ohio is easily seen via satellite, but the center of it was blocked and erased by glaciers, creating lakes, which burst, carving the Ohio river we see today. As for the "Why" the earthquakes happen, The Ozark highlands are newer than the Rocky Mountains as a geologic feature. Their uplift stopped in earnest only 5 million years ago, and the Earthquakes are a leftover of the stresses that uplifted the nearby St Francois Mountains.

I live on the southern end of the Charleston seismic region in southeast Ga.. In 2004 while at my sister's visiting the house shook and there was a sound like a large thunderclap. My sister swore that it was an earthquake but I laughed at her telling her it wasn't. I had to apologize the next day as it was on the front page of our local paper that a 3.7 earthquake was indeed recorded nearby.

I live in Metro Phoenix and when there a bigger earthquakes in California, our pools will slosh and act as an indicator. I've often wondered that when the big one hits say LA, how much will we feel it here. There were some older buildings around downtown that were basically on stilts, with parking underneath. A couple are two story buildings. I used to service s customer in one in the mid 90s. Always wondered...when that 8 or 9 hits LA, will those buildings still stand? I've spent a lot of time in California over the years. Biggest quake I ever noticed we like 3.8 or 3.9. I was woken up once in my hotel room, up in the back bay area east of Oakland. It was like a 4.4 and remember waking up thinking....who's shaking my bed? Wasn't until I got up later and learned it was a quake. I did sleep through a 5.1 in LA area in mid 80s but, was during my partying and surfing days, crashing on friends floors around Redondo. I was more passed out...then sleeping. Remember being so bummed I missed it lol. Now...in my 50s, not so sure I would enjoy it. With the 4.4 in LA yesterday...that's a nasty little fault. Hopefully... it releases it's pressure and settles down. A big one there and...LA is done! Would be horrifyingly bad. LA is becoming a well lit dump and could use a good hosing down but... wouldn't want all that suffering from all this people. They just need to change to political scene there....that's destroying LA and California. Breaking my heart. Don't even want to vacation there anymore. Miss the old LA and socal.

I think China has the same risks when it comes to these intraplate earthquakes. The 2008 Sichuan earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing 1,500 km away from the epicenter. It was even felt in Myanmar and Thailand. This and New Madrid made me realize that the true strength of earthquakes isn't always determined by their magnitude.

Regarding harvest of lanternfish for protein. I have to wonder for an organism that literally blankets the planet, what is it's rate limiting factor for growth? Is it oxygen? Phytoplankton density? If the rate limiter (as one would expect of a saturated population) is intraspecies competition. Then additional predation should have no impact, since the fish that are harvested are merely getting out of the way for their brothers that would have survived had they not been starved to death by competition with the survivors being caught.

I was actually fairly close to the 2011 Louisa, VA earthquake! The shaking felt like the ground was turning to liquid, and while almost no damage happened to our house, other houses in the neighborhood had cracked interior walls, dislodged furniture, fallen picture frames, etc. My high school orientation even got postponed because the gym suffered some structural damage, and all of the balls stuck in the ceiling fell lol

During that earthquake in West Virginia like 15 years ago I felt it here in Ontario. I was actually chatting online with a bunch of friends, a lot of whom were around the east coast from New York to South Carolina and we all said we felt it at about the same time. It was really weird to feel the exact same thing at the same time as people hundreds or thousands of miles away. It wasn't that strong, either. Just felt wobbly, like my insides were made of jello for a moment. There was a closer one in Quebec a year or so later that was strong enough to wake me up. And that was still a couple hundred miles away.

Small little note geologic wise- the Appalachia Mountains formed due to a plate shift themselves. There are small plates that might occasionally diverge or converge depending on which way they shift. The Appalachia match up with northern American mountains and even the ones leading up to the UK and Scotland. Earthquakes along the east are rare but not at all impossible. Anytime a mountain has formed, it is most likely due to seismic activity and has some form of molten activity depending on lava vein accessibility and tectonic ‘agreement’ or plates that only rub against each other and not push into or pull away
