I have to agree, I don't see Tamiya as a racing company, but I do enjoy tuning them up and taking them to my local track, its the same as people tuning up their road cars for track days, you are not going to be winning any races with them. But it is fun. This, after all, for me, is just a fun hobby that has always been fun since the 80s.

The lunchbox is a classic, like an original VW beetle. The Gorgon is like the new beetle. They look similar, but the new one does everything so much better. I'd still rather have the old classic Beetle.

It has to be said, but the Lunchbox is really just a Hornet on stilts. And it handles like that too. From what I've seen of the Gorgon, it's very planted by comparison and doesn't have any of the Lunchboxes weird geometry/dynamics. I've never had a Lunchbox and have never had the desire to get one. It came out down here in Aus just after the Monster Beetle, and I think the disappointment I had in that car rubbed off on the Lunchbox.

The Gorgon is for people who want to drive fast and break their RC car on a concrete ramp at a skatepark. The Lunchbox is for those that appreciate the scale detail and character of a hard body and understand that higher speed doesn't necessarily mean more fun.

I've come to accept it a tamiya is about the expierience building it then bringing it to life. Its a very different type of ownership. I have a midnight pumpkin and it's actually my main runner. I'm not brutal with it but not exactly easy either. It's a very fun truck though. I did a CRP upper lower arm conversion on the front but I screwed the geometry up so it steers terribly. Eventually I'll fix it but the truck is a blast and my dogs love to chase it.

@@mrlt1 Yes, I agree. I bought an XR311 re-re just because I appreciated the fact that it was Tamiya's first off-road RC car. Driving wise it is fragile and not very good but then I decided to actually make it reasonably good to drive by fitting exquisite metal parts. I look at it and marvel at the quality of the engineering. It is like a piece of artwork! Of course I appreciate that the Gorgon is a good machine but it has a flappy thin plastic body and in a few years it will be forgotten.

I’m not an RTR kind myself, for me part of the fun has always been the build/paint, but I understand it’s a huge market (of course the LB is available RTR too in the XB series). But if I were to be in that market I wish there was the option of a stick-type controller. The Lunchbox was one of my early cars, now fully restored, and I loved it but they are getting very long in the tooth now. Thanks for another video!

I don't get why you are flagging off tamiya rc when part of your collection is tamiya , I used to love your videos , but now I'm thinking of unsubscribing from your channel because of this , I've been a massive fan of tamiya rc cars since the early 80s , yeah other brands are supposedly better, but nearly double the price , in fact, I'm really sad that you've turned into a brand snob
@RCKickschannel
@RCKickschannel 6 сағат бұрын
I think you are reading more into it than it is. Sometimes buses just come along in twos and threes. No master plan or agenda, that's just how things unfold. I just report on how I see it and if that doesn't fit with your feelings, well that's OK. I think you are projecting on the "brand snob" comment as the last few videos are talking about cheaper alternatives to Tamiya that are better, not more expensive options. Truly, go back and watch them and you will see you bent the content to fit your own narrative. It's fascinating. I will say the next few videos are going to be high end RC, so actually your "brand snob" comment would be more accurate for them.

My first proper RC car was a Tamiya Frog. An early one I got in 1984, and still own. I bought a 2nd hand Monster Beetle from a friend. It was spectacularly underwhelming, and made a mockery of the ORV chassis. I sold it on after a few months and about 100 steering servo savers, which it broke for fun.

@@RCKickschannel, I raced my Frog indoors, on wood floors, in 1990 - 91. It was already 8 years old when I started racing it. Everyone else was running Manta Ray hybrids, with lots of RW Racing upgrade parts, and then the Top Force, when it was released. Most of the other guys racing didn't even know what the Frog was. Eventually during a heat it got pushed into a wall, and the chassis snapped in two behind the front suspension. Retired it and decided to try race a Wild One against the 4WD cars. I didn't have money to buy a new car, plus my Dad wouldn't let me buy another RC car. I had two, which was one too many as far as he was concerned. Rebuilt the Frog in 2000, with obsolete NOS parts I had collected from Model Shops around the UK during the 1990s. I have a new, unpainted original body and two sets of original Frog decals knocking about. Left the Frog on display in my parent's office at their home in Ireland. Now also got a NIB Frog re-re. Will build it some day. My Mum died Friday week ago, and I was back in Ireland for her funeral. I brought my original Frog back over to England yesterday. Trip down memory lane. The original body has holes in it where a neighbour's Cocker Spaniel took a dislike to the car, bit it, and ran off with it in it's mouth. And it has Ghostbusters stickers on the body shell, - the first Ghostbusters film was released in 1984 too.

Thank you for this video. I may be alone on this but that Gorgon body looks awesome. Reminds me of a Dakar car. Lunchbox is as I recall, 1/12 while the Gorgon is 1/10. I think the bigger and wider Gorgon would handle better. What country is Arrma? Never heard of them. Bottom line I would accept the Gorgon as a gift, and if I had the money give one away to a younger relative or friend's kid as a gift. It's a fresh product that delivers.

The Gorgon is nice but it definitely has problems. First impressions was great. Then i had steering servo saver problems. And still having peoblems with it steering cause the saver always kicks in. Second issue was the clutch constantly slipping. So obviously tighten the adjustment but it still slips like crazy. So in the you have to just tighten it right down. Which it slips again. And these problems were out of the box and still on-going. With no solution online or aftermarket parts to solve it. Body shell cracks easy where the solid plastic attaches to the shell.
@RCKickschannel
@RCKickschannel 9 сағат бұрын
So many RTR cars come with less than ideal servos, not sure why manufacturers don’t just fit appropriate servos but really it’s down to saving money, especially on ultra entry level price point products like the Gorgon. The slipper sounds like a strange one. Have you tried dismantling it to see what the pads are like? It might be worth swapping the pads out if some contaminants have gotten on the pads. That’s not expensive and the place I would start if it’s done up really tight but still slipping. I would also check that it was put together correctly as mistakes do happen in manufacturing so someone could have missed something small but important out. Polycarbonate bodies will always crack and it’s well worth doing the rubber glue and edge tap trick when you get a new body.

@@RCKickschannel Bang for buck I'm very impressed overall with the design. It's quick and strong. And for a novice it's perfect. No real adjustments an easy to work on. I don't regret getting it at all. Only other issue to watch out for is the screws for motor mounting can pull through the plastic. People over tighten them cause the motor can move. But I've used a fibre washers and haven't had that issue. I'm thinking one or two things. It was pulling wheelies when I first got it out of the box and the power surprised me. On the third battery it started slipping. Figured it needed adjustment but also check for contamination. But seem clean and not worn out. So adjusted but it carried on slipping. I eventually ran out of adjustment. Maybe the spring or clutch is weak. The servo saver issue seems similar a weak spring maybe. Couldn't get full range but found the servo was lose. It worked better but the servo saver kicks in at around ½ range out of the box. Anyways ordered new parts hopefully it solves the issues.

100% the LB is an icon and really yes, the people who should be purchasing the Lunchbox are the older vintage lovers that remember it fondly. For younger children the Lunchbox has just become so vintage, you can get far superior offerings for the same or less money these days and the Gorgon shows just how far the LB has fallen behind. A few people have commented an interesting point, will we remember the Gorgon in five years while the LB has been going strong for decades? 🤔
