I moved my laptop over to mint after trying Windows 11 on my laptop maybe a year ago and finally moved my main workstation to Pop OS after Windows 10 EOS was announced. It hasn't been painless but Windows 11 finally got me to the point where I'd rather deal with Linux problems than Windows ones and to be honest Linux as a desktop OS has improved a lot since the last time I used it. That said I do still have a Windows mini PC to run office on since I sometimes need to work on stuff at home, but I find windows 11 much less annoying when I don't have to run it all the time and I'm not interested in dual booting or running windows in a VM or owning a modern Mac. Not ideal but it works for me.

I will give my honest opinion on Linux with Steam it's improving but needs work without the use of Proton more and more games are coming to Linux I think when Windows 10 dies I am not going to care because I still got security software and can eventually emulate my games if Valve wants to pull the plug. As unreliable as Valve is for gaming we should really think about bringing game discs back to PCs from the early 2000s which is what will future proof computers which is what technically DOES future proof computers if you are a PC gamer and own a disk drive in this day in age you're lucky and should keep it you're not missing out on anything.

When i say that i never used Macs in my entire life, i mean that i never used macs that i own, at least for now. Macs do have their limits, but nowadays, since the introduction of the M1 macs, macs have become more faster than ever and more efficient according to various people and various sources. I have used a mac before, but that was a borrow, and this exact Mac was an M1 Macbook Air which amazed me, and i am pretty sure the Pro models of the M2 for example will amaze me more, at least once i learn about Macs more and unleash their true potential. I haven't used the M series macs more to unleash it tho... I loved Windows, but now i hate having it for my personal use, and now i want to shift my workloads to Linux or a Macbook, and keep the gaming stuff to Windows 10 for the moment until i find a soloution about gaming on the 2 alternative platforms. Otherwise, i'll stick to Windows 10 for gaming on my Ryzen PC or play games on a Steam Deck...

I don't blame you, Windows is getting ridiculously crazy these days with the amount of telemetry and spyware that Microsoft is putting into their oses. And as strange as this sounds, this is why I plan on using Windows 7 again soon just like I did about 4 - 6 years ago because that was the last feasible os Microsoft has ever released. It may be unsupported now but as long as my programs work and as long as I am wise about what I do online, I personally don't feel afraid to use it in the slightest. Otherwise, I could ditch Windows all together and use Linux from now on if I really had to.

While Linux is awesome in many ways you're absolutely right that certain things just don't work or work like crap. Still, if you can live with that, its still the better choice. As for distros I'd definitely recommend Mint (use the Edge ISO as it fixes some driver problems especially on AMD) and Pop!_OS as well.

I would suggest to dual boot Linux Mint alongside Windows, gives you the chance to nope out of your Linux experiment should it be too overwhelming and return being used by Windows. Leaves all your files, games and shit as they were when you left, ready to be gradually transferred to the Linux partition. And when you do switch to Linux full stop, you might want to remove the Windows (there are elaborate guides online) and install a windows VM in case you desperately need to run something that doesn't work with Wine.

I run 5 PCs in my home. Not all at once but I have windows 10 on 3 and Windows 11 on one and Zorin paid version on 1 that I have been testing. I think the key that I am looking for is what windows program can I get to run on Linux that does not have a Linux version but the emulator works. What I can not get to work Next testing will be what can I run in a virtual Machine. I have programs that I have ran from windows 95. Programs I got such as Coral Pinnacle video editing. I got that program before Corel got it with a TV stick I bought and I have upgraded it to version 26 over the years. What I see as the biggest problem is the Open Source Linux community. I do not mind paying a fare price for software. If there is no money in development there is no development. MY view is why Linux never got the kick it should have gotten. After all Mac is just Linux Code the same from Unix. With no Open source community to deal with!
@user-ks1oh2wx6o
@user-ks1oh2wx6o 8 күн бұрын
That last part is completely untrue. Half of the appeal of linux is that its open source. You'd be surprised on how much development gets done from donations alone, mostly because the developers of open source projects really care about their projects, whether or not they make money. The reason linux isn't more popular is because it never comes pre-installed on popular computers.

I saw the warning signs already with Windows 8. I was hoping M$ would walk it back. And they did, on the metro interface. But when windows 10 was released, I learned it was getting worse. All that telemetry and spyware that was switched on by default. ugh. The last Windows version I used at home, was 8.1. And I kept that only because of schoolwork that needed windows software. Once I graduated, I retired my windows laptop, and built a new desktop PC with Linux Mint. That was eight years ago.

I had that feeling that Microsoft started becoming worse ever since they made Windows 8, but when Windows 8 came out, i was 6 years old at the time (now 17, turning 18 on September) and i had no idea about that stuff, nor this os's existence. I do vividly remember that in 2015, when Windows 10 was announced and that GWX.EXE thing was installed on the computer, i begged my parents to upgrade to Windows 10 without explaining a valid reason because i always thought that updates and upgrades mean something better. I do remember seeing in 2021 old videos about people ranting on Windows 10 installing by itself without the user's permission, and it was hella infuriating. Imagine you were working on a video or something and boom, your pc restarts by itself and the upgrade screen appears. Infuriating right? Microsoft these days and ever since a decade ago has gotten very infuriating. Telemetry over the place, useless stuff smeared around the os (microsoft store? what is our pc, a tablet?), windows updating by itself without wanting you to, Microsoft Edge thinking it's revolutionary and begging you to use it, and now we got Microsoft begging us to upgrade to Windows 11 before mid October 2025, without admiting their past sins. Really Microsoft? At this point there is no wonder why there would be advanced users rocking Windows 10 LTSC until its end. I have been a loyal user of Windows and that's what i get. From now on, i'll be resorting to Windows 10, Macs and Linux. Macs for me are not an option, but i would want a Macbook, either the one with the M1 or the one with the M2 chip, but i should focus on Linux in order to learn more about it and unlock its true power. So long Microsoft...I'll never forget you.

If enough people start using Linux and ditch windows there would be a push for more software to work with it. Otherwise you will be stuck with windows for certain programs. I get that you need certain things and aren't fully devoted to it yet. I was like that until I started figuring out the pros and cons and started using it as a daily driver. Found alternative programs for myself. Gaming on it doesn't bother me as my graphics card isn't strong enough to "ray-trace". When it comes to considering switching, it all adds up to preference and how you will personally use it. Not going to get upset if you still rock windows 10. This laptop already had a factory image of the OEM IBM Windows XP reinstall. I do have a disc with Windows XP Home Edition SP2, but i felt like keeping this laptop stock like how it was back in 2004 since it had the factory image. Also, there is no need to reset the BIOS if all you want to do is install an OS. For me, resetting the bios is needed only when you're trying to solve a problem and track it down.
