Like you, I live in Canada (in Manitoba) and I will ride as soon as the sand is off the roads until the snow flies again. Labels are childish. It doesn't matter how we describe ourselves (biker, rider, whatever) we're all having a great time indulging in something we love to do. I personally don't care what people ride. Harley, Yamaha, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki etc etc. I will wave to everyone, stop to help anyone and even break bread with them. Its about the experience and the road stories. I could care less if someone works on their ride. Is it a good thing to do your own basic maintenance? Sure, if you have the space and tools. As riders we need to look at the bigger picture. Ridership is decreasing for a bunch of reasons. As riders we should be encouraging people to ride, not label or criticize people for their bike of choice, how/when they ride or don't ride. Who cares how many kms they ride in a season. They're riding. We're riding. We should be setting a better example to encourage others to take up the hobby or lifestyle or whatever you want to call it. Labels suck, especially the ones with negative vibes.

Interesting question. I grew up loving bikes in the 70s - in Sweden. I preferred fast bikes. I kept up somewhat with Harleys, because they looked (choppers) and sounded cool, but they weren't my thing - except the XR750, and later the XR1000. The definition of a "biker" meant he had a chopper, or a chopper-worthy material. They did stuff mostly themselves. They did buy new if they had the money, but never kept it original. So I naturally never had an inclination to want to be called a biker. I never wanted to be called a transvestite or a stock broker either, for similar reasons. I only started following bike related stuff on youtube in the 2010s, and I was perplexed by the broad use of the term "biker" for crotch rockets, e-bikes, mopeds and whatever with 2 wheels and some form of motor. My kind of rider had another (Swedish) nickname referring to road racing. This group, in common with "bikers", put an honor in doing things themselves. Usually rode jap bikes modified to go fast and look fast. Italian sports bikes were of course included. Joe Bar Team, the first generation, is a good reflection of the type. There were other types to that didn't mix together either, but I won't list them here. My car interests include some European RWD cars but mostly American 60s cars. Again, you are worth talking to if you work on your own cars and know every modifaction because you did it yourself. Those that buy something to impress others, will be obvious, and tedious. I much rather speak to a Trabant-owner that knows his stuff, than someone who bought a movie promoted model like the GT500 or the impala 4dht 67. If someone wants to have a classic car or bike and do none of the work, that is fine, but I won't have anything to discuss with them if their interest is superficial and with no history. The hard time newbies are given, is a healthy growing up lesson for younger enthusiasts. It carries the message: you don't get anywhere by buying your honor. You have to work for it, so you might aswell start out with something crappy and make it better. To work on what you can afford to lose is a healthy lesson. As opposed to feeling forced to finance an expensive "classic car" to fit in with the playboys and gangsters that they learn to look up to. To achieve by learning the necessary skills is another healthy lesson.

The area I live in is a good 80 percent Harley's, they don't wear helmets, don't wave at rice burners, wear all black, and don't ride when it gets cold out. But their real bikers, I just laugh at them, been riding 54 years, English, Japanese, and Harley. As long as your head is in the wind it's a cool thing. I thought bikers wore vests with patches and motorcycles don't. Biker is some sort of take on the hard core MC's or TV show MC's and bikers try to emulate that life style or TV heroes or Harley bad boy, freedom loving marketing ploy. Motorcyclists just ride to have a good time and the majority don't care what others think.

@Kilts MC Montreal congratulations! The debate on who is and who isn't a biker has been going on for a couple decade's. What I've found 99% of people making comments like you're not a biker, don't ride and probably never will. In my opinion a "biker" is someone that's rides, someone that enjoys riding, someone that doesn't agree with the ways of society all the time. Someone that's a free thinker. A person that's hard to shove bs down their throat.

Well, I'm apparently not a biker either .One because I'm a female, two because I went with Honda Rebel 500 and not some heavy Harley as my first bike. Can't win but thankfully I don't ride for anyone but myself and I don't need anyone's validation. Safe riding my friend!

all bikers have the same joy of two wheels. Does not matter what one rides. What is important is the more of us that are out there the less cagers are out there. In the show car world it is the same crap. You have the ones who drive their cars and you have the ones who just trailer their cars and would never drive them. Again, both are in it for the same reason. the joy of cars. This division among people that have a love for the same thing will never end. sadly

You hit the nail right on the head.. Always will be judgment, I guess it is actually the same in the car world... Sad. We all have the same joy, lets celebrate it with each other!
