America's wool clothing, like LLBean, commands top prices. The institute should expand. Firstly merino has quality control and top prices in the market but it seems the Alpaca industry doesn't. "Alpaca" garments often seem to be synthetic. The institute should expand into Alpaca. Secondly, KZfaq and social media have massive, unscientific reviews of wool clothing, including review of and rejection of woolen military clothing. The institute should expand into comparison of all forms of wool and synthetic and personal and environment factors. One fabric does not all situations fit. Thirdly, like others, I have returned to wool because it's indigenous, sustainable, biodegradable and has superior performance for some conditions. I have innovated an army jacshirt with smartphone pockets, a 2nd column of buttons for tighter, windproof fit, and collar button to keep my neck warm. I have innovated Merino balaclavas to fit on or below the chin, two sewn together for warmth and wind resistance. I have added a skirt to $200 Fjall Raven Ovik M 1/4 zipper, a chest and back panel from wool blankets. So it's a mid layer or outer layer. Salktany Machu Pichu guides use "$2 Cabela's pocket rain ponchos" and that's the lightest, cheapest way to waterproof wool layers. I added wool panels covering my complete torso to Hudson's Bay 70% wool sweaters. Essentially, prewashed, preshrunk wool blankets can line wool garmets with either 14" x 14" panels, adding wind resistance and warmth to chest and back while letting out underarm sweat and absorbing back sweat, or alternatively larger wool blanket inner lining covering entire torso. The institute should sell research services to USA Army, NATO, and Ukraine's army. Edmonton's winter is sub arctic and I've found the above are solutions to skate skiing, winter cycling and to some extent, skiing uphill. ( ski touring, which has military applications). Alpaca hollow fibres have potential if the institute can research and quality control them. 😂

fantastic explanation. Thank you for sharing this. I was blown away by the environmental impact of synthetic fibers being washed into our water ways and oceans. I'm convinced... nothing but wool and other natural fibers.

Wool is fantastic except the moths love to eat it! I have had what I thought were well sealed closets and cedar wardrobes full of wool suits and other wool garments get eaten full of holes several times. Now I keep my smaller wool collection sealed in bags, plastic containers and synthetic garment bags.

I have the same problem -- various wool base layers that just get "holier and holier" without even being worn. None of them came with proper care instructions.

Gorgeous footage of Pierre working. As a shearer myself, I can vouch for the veracity and honesty of this. Thank you for producing it and showing the truth of what we do.

Do you recommend lanolising your wool every so often?
@danceswithbadgers
@danceswithbadgers 8 ай бұрын
Only if it's going to be your outermost layer. Base layers will not work properly if lanolised as this will inhibit the moisture transmission properties of the fine wool. Lanolising heavy jumpers is good to enhance weather resistance though.

Wool decomposes yes, but all that synthetic dye is extremely toxic. What natural dye options do we have?
