One can have respect for the fairies without believing in fairies. Respect in this case being respect for the beliefs of our ancestors, respect for the stories/folklore of old that were passed down the generations. This is the reason why people study ancient mythology or religions. The fairy stories are fantastical, of course but it is the way people of the past tried to make sense of the world around them and things they couldn't explain. Also, we have a duty to keep these traditions alive and pass them on to the next genereation.

I could not help comparing your idea of the stimulus of pain to other more mundane things that happen in our lives. I live in a bushfire prone area, we know we should keep the yard cleared and bushes trimmed but we get complacent until suddenly there's a bushfire alert and within an hour everyone becomes totally focused and the place is sorted as though we're about to sell. I used to trick myself into cleaning the house really quickly by imaging that someone I greatly admired was coming to visit and I didn't want to be humiliated having a grotty home. It's all about the threat. Same with craming before an exam. I was always curious about why this worked. Even though you've had months to prepare & study leaving it till the last day forces you to focus because the threat of failure is closer and more real. Maybe I'm a bit off course here and sound a little trite but I see similarities in the way we can manipulate our own brain.
