I ensure not to identify with any political ideology. No political side fully represents my views on everything, so by not picking any side, I can never be wrongly accused of taking a stance on any particular issue that the majority of the left, right, center, or otherwise, tend to believe in. I am simply an individual. This prevents anybody from knowing my views on a particular topic unless I explicitly share it with them. In today's polarizing world, publicly identifying with even a portion of a political side can mean instantly creating enemies. I have no interest in that.

I agree that the greatest weaknesses of libertarianism are with respect to poverty and regulation. But I disagree with you about their anti-war politics. The best point libertarianism makes is that war planning (or really, warmongering) is the most extreme form of centralized planning, and it's therefore most likely to fail. Libertarians usually acknowledge that the American Revolution had to be fought because the British empire was too oppressive, and the British empire lost because it was overconfident in what military force alone could do in managing world affairs. This is also why the US lost in Vietnam. Libertarians would also agree that World War 2 began as the result of overconfident war planning before, during and after WW1. It could have been prevented if western "crony capitalists" weren't supporting Italian and German fascists in the first place to protect their "crony capitalist" profit interests.

As a society we see to have transferred belief from religion and miracles to medicine and education. And when doctors and teachers turn out to be only human, not magicians performing miracles, we turn our fury on them.

This fictional piece strikes a very personal chord, as I relate to the narrating voice's description of childhood. I enjoy the 'to-the-point' storytelling you have here and the ending was thoroughly uplifting. Thank you for sharing.

Love these! As always, these are useful gems. More one-liners I’ve gleaned from your work: Status is the enemy of contentment. Family is overrated. Environmental issues are treated not with cool-headed scientific analysis, but heated religious fervor. The more prestigious the school, the worse the quality of instruction is likely to be. It can be wise to forgo State U for You U. And perhaps the one that is most potent: Never look back. Always look forward.

That is one of the most uncomfortably racist descriptions of a group of people I have ever heard in my entire life. Ah yes, “The muddy, diseased Arabs couldn’t figure out how to grow their own food effectively, so they had to come crawling into the good, civilized land of Isreal to eat theirs.” I am honestly baffled how someone can say anything along these lines without a single moment of reflection. I find it extremely difficult to consider any of this as a rational argument when you have such a simple, negative, borderline cartoonish view of the opposing side. You claim to be against the long history of dehumanizing Jews (as we ALL should be) but speak of another group in the same dehumanizing manner. This is a _glaring_ flaw in the very basis of your argument, and if you’re truly ignorant of it, you must be made aware.

I personally think that, with respect to the future, all in all, we’ll have neither a utopian nor dystopian future, but we’ll most likely have a future in which we’ll all muddle through in the face of both significant breakthroughs and significant crises.

"Grass doesn't grow on a busy street" is a quote I heard long ago regarding balding. I take it to mean that there's little resources remaining for the body to grow hair on the head of an individual who is so often using resources in that area (the brain) for continuous thought, research and learning.

Mr Nemko, I don't suppose you would read something for me and tell me what you think? From what I have seen it is not your sort of thing (I write sci fi shorts) but I would really appreciate at least a technical review from an accomplished writer, if you could spare the time.

@MartyNemko128 күн бұрын
Alas, there is no afterlife. Only the relative pleasure of nothingness vs the physical and/or mental pain of living. We've created the concept of an afterlife, heaven and hell, etc as balms against fear of death.

You're understanding of the word community is limited and narrow minded. Even Aristotle described community as being a 'group established by men having shared values'. To believe it's somehow morphed from meaning neighborhood reflects on your knowledge and perhaps bias.

Yes I have noticed the annoying overuse of the word in recent years. "It takes a villiage..." "If we all work together..." and those ads where a conspicuously diverse cast takes turns reciting some idealistic platitudes. To hell with them!
