Would you consider Scooby-Doo plot-driven? In every episode and movie, Scooby and the gang are almost the exact same characters at the end as they were at the beginning. There's usually some plot twist around the "monster" or supernatural phenomena in the story.

I love this video is basically Star Trek vs Star Wars... Did you know you can actually enjoy and appreciate both? I do and I don't see one as better than the other. Sometimes I'm in a more escapist mood and want the laser swords and mystical force powers and sometimes I want a more grounded and logical story. They're both great at doing similar things in a completely different way 😅😂

Sherlock Holmes was never about Sherlock to me, moreso Watson and his development as a character. I would not put Sherlock Holmes a plot driven story, as I all I read it for is to see how Watson and Sherlock bounce off one another and with Sherlock's genius the case may be solved, but not without the help of Watson. In my eyes Watson was always the genius of the stories but that is a post for another day.

Maybe someday... I love and am so proud of this channel, but it's so much work and the return was diminishing. KZfaq is hard, but I do have ideas and come back every now and then to see how things are going, thanks for the support and I hope the content helps with anything you are working on! Reading kind words always reminds me that this is worth it 🙂

Okay so if I'm writing a novel about humans going to war with an alien race of space reptiles, is that Science Fiction or Science Fantasy?

I don't know the dictionary definition, but I think this definition is too broad. Writing, plot, main, character ect are not trope. At least in the daytoday conversation we use it that way.

Thank you, i find this video to be both useful & insightful. I think Kaiji & Ashita no Joe are great examples of character driven stories which i like. Parasyte & Vinland Saga being like a mix between plot & character driven storylines.

I guess I've always thought of Tropes as something pertaining to a particular writer or genre. While cliches are more of commonly over used themes that occur across genres and writers. For example, 2 of he biggest cliches of our time, spanning genres and writers, that I m very tired of are: 1) "Your not my father." And 2) the divorced or widowed single parent uprooting and moving to a different. Less desirable location, most commonly out of he city and into the country. Whereas a trope within superhero movies has commonly been the sky beam. I tend to think cliches are cringey while tropes don't have to be

Wow. Your content is great. I like how you analyse writing and stories from vídeo games to books and shows. I would like to see a video where you discuss which form is best and what are the beneficts of each. I like vídeo games but it Kills me to see book reading declining in Younger generations. :(

This video is not really a good reference for what is the definition of "Science Fantasy". What he is describing as "Science Fantasy" is in actuality Soft Sci-Fi (Sci-Fi stories that don't care as much about scientific accuracy) as opposed to Hard Sci-Fi (Sci-Fi that _does_ care about scientific accuracy). I don't blame him for getting things wrong and confused, though just as 90% of all people ever. The line between Sci-Fi and Fantasy can be really thin at times. In order to know what truly is "Science Fantasy" you need to know how to truly separate Science Fiction from Fantasy. If you really want to know the real distinction between them... well, it is rather complex still, but the short version is: Fantasy is speculative fiction that has a non-naturalistic vision of its own setting. Science Fiction, in contrast, is speculative fiction that _is_ naturalistic regarding its own setting. That is, Fantasy treats its non-real aspects as something supernatural that is beyond any scope of scientific analysis, thus making it "magic" (non-naturalism) Sci-Fi, on the other hand, has a materialist view of its setting, little matters how innacurate to real-life science and physics it might be. Sience Fantasy, by its turn, would have a certain level of hybridism and ambiguity between what is natural and is not natural. This entire topic on its longest version is complicated. But it comes mostly to the "feels" that your story wishes to bring upon either your magic or technology or "magic technology/technological magic" (???). I recommend having a read on the basics of naturalism (the philosophy) to get some grasp at this matter and then look at Warhammer 40K, DOOM and Honkai Impact 3rd for some more practical examples of this. Both are stories set in highly technological futuristic worlds where the "supernatural" still coexists (or is even used in conjuction) with such high tech and is treated as such thing beyond science on its highest scopes.

This clears up my confusion regarding who the protagonist is in Gintama! I always thought it was Shimpachi, since the story starts from his perspective, and he is the character that the audience can relate to. However people always said it was Gintoki, since his ambitions and challenges are given the main focus, and he is the one that grows and changes the most. Now I understand that Shimpachi is the main character, while Gintoki is the protagonist.

When consuming any kind of narrative, either something with an over-arching plot or something more episodic, I always prefer character driven stories. For example, Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a strictly episodic series, but the comedy comes almost entirely from the characters and their interactions.

So you see, my problem is this There are 2 main characters, the stories follows them both, their hopes, achievements, failures, relationships. But they are on 2 opposite sides of war, this war is brutal and almost at the end So making an ending where everyone just get along and live happily ever after, doesn't fit. Making either side win though still doesn't feel good, not to mention, who do i choose? And leaving it unresolved is NOT an option, too much has been setup to just be dropped
