Brilliant video again, Graham! Your videos are cheering me up as I spent too much money on a 1971 MGB GT, which was a death trap due to completely worn out front suspension and steering! The consequences of the 40-year MOT exemption and a clueless owner! He polished it up, but I don't know how he drove it. It was all over the road! I'm a thousand pounds into the restoration of a car I thought that I could use.

Looked like you and the missus were the youngest there. Octogenarian get together. Sorry. But from here in Aus, looked like a nice get together. PS: F1 world champion , Nigel Mandela was a special constable for 11 years on the Isle ( highway patrol) These days, the younger gen don’t really have an affinity with MG badge. Keep up your vids, really really enjoy them. Did that steering problem arise for your track day?? Suggest yes. I have mine lock wired to prevent such incidents. Enjoy , thankyou.

Thanks for your comment - much appreciated! There was quite a range of ages there but yes, we were probably some of the youngest... Yes, Nigel Mansell was a special in the IOM for a while - I think he lives in Jersey now. We interviewed him a few years ago when he competed at Le Mans with his 2 sons... Not sure how the bolt fell out, but the wiring thing sounds like a good idea. We've got a video coming up on the MGB that took part in the London-Sidney Marathon rally in 1968 and all the bolts were wired!

Very nicely done, Graham. You have whet my appetite for our upcoming trip to England and a tour around the Lake District in an MGB. You obviously had a mixed bag of weather which, I guess, is to be expected. But I think the highlight of your trip is meeting all those fabulous like minded people.

Great video which is spurring me on to extract my BGT from the garage where it has been slumbering for nearly 30 years and actually use it. Might just need a new set of tyres first though. Outside lane in an B on the M6 brave man !!
@ClassicMGB
@ClassicMGB 3 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment - the M6 wasn't particularly fast at the time but it proves that the MGB works fine in modern traffic - a bit disconcerting passing bug HGVs though... Definitely get the tyres changes though - I managed to spin 360 degrees on a track day and thought it was my driving until someone spotted my rear tyres were 23 years old - that's my excuse anyway!!! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/erpjpa511bPJf4U.htmlsi=lOvGHne8QyuF4MZA&t=155

Thanks for your comment - In total we did 701 miles and averaged 28.52 miles per gallon which I was pleased with. My car does use quite a lot of oil so in total it probably used about a litre over the trip... One point on fuel, we didnl't see any of the usual suppliers (Esso, Shell etc) on the Island. It was a brand I'd never come across but it was fine and E5 was available.

When I met my wife Jackie in 2009 she wasn't at all interested in classic cars etc. Now if she sees a classic she will take a photo to show me. If we are out together in the car and a classic drives past, she'll ask me what it is, I'll tell her and she'll look at me, roll her eyes and say 'no its not it's an Aston Wolseley' with a wink in her eye.

In 1979, at age 22, I had an M reg (1973/4) factory MGB-GT V8 (one of only 2500-ish made), and dang it, if I didn't sell it to go traveling after a couple of years. Big-time seller's remorse now! I recently looked up the reg, and it's still on the road. I really would like to buy it back. Weirdly, now that I live in Colorado, USA, instead of Essex, UK, my daily driver is a 2018 Jeep Wrangler, much better in snow, and which is as aerodynamic as a house brick yet goes faster from 0-60 and has double the horsepower from a V6 3.6l engine. I guess engine efficiency, transmission, and all the running gear, lubricants, and so on have greatly benefitted from 50 years of Darwinian survival of the fittest automotive evolution.

Thanks for your comment - that's really interesting as there are probably way more MGBs in the US than the UK given the export figures... Your car looks wonderfully cared for. I keep almost no spares in my car, but I do carry plugs, fuses, tape, wire and epoxy putty and a relay. I do excessive maintenance so things are checked often. I also carry a fire extinguisher and quite a few tools. With an eye to weight, I install new parts on the car instead of carrying them in the trunk. I do believe, I'll go put a spare belt in the trunk. I also carry a laptop as I have an exotic fuel injection on my old BMC engine. It allows detailed troubleshooting of the engine; yes, I know EFI is a bit overkill.

I want a GTS for my daily driver. I'm the ideal person for an EV. Of my two daily drivers (both ICE) one was driven 7000 miles in the last year, the other 2000. The longest trips I usually make are about 450 miles. I could easily drive halfway, eat lunch while refreshing the charge, then proceed on to my destination. That's exactly what I do with my ICE cars anyway!

Shame on Lord March for selling out to the Chinese!!

Thanks for your comment - I'm sorry you feel that way, but sadly the world moves on and I think its great that the marque lives on whilst many others have simply disappeared. A huge number of products are now Chinese - everyone thinks that Apple is Amercican yet their iPhones are made in China. Yes, the Chinese EVs are different but then the MGB was very different form the old pre-war MGs, and also the later Longbridge MGs. Most of us don't use our MGBs as daily drivers and have another car for everyday use. I have a Volvo for long distance (Chinese owned) and my wife has an MG4 which she loves. If you can keep an open mind, try driving an MG EV - you might just be impressed...

These would be interesting, higher volume cars if they had a DOHC, ICE inline 4 normally aspirated engine with around 150HP and 160 lb ft of torque. Nothing wrong with offering electric, but most of us want nothing to do with a rechargeable vehicle.
@ClassicMGB
@ClassicMGB 16 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment - fair point - driving an EV is a different experience and for pure driving pleasure, its an ICE every time, but for a quick trip to the shops in heavy traffic for example, an EV is a good solution. That said, they don't work for everyone and the tax benefits will disappear soon, so it will be worth seeing what happens. If you haven't driven an EV, give it a try, you might like it!

How the hell MG has made it 100 years is astounding. It has certainly been a bumpy ride. I hope SAIC can keep the quality up so the brand can have a stable and respectable future. I would rather MG be completely British owned but I think this is preferable to the brand not existing anymore.
@ClassicMGB
@ClassicMGB 16 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment - couldn't have put it better myself. I would prefer MG to be British owned, but SAIC seem to be improving rapidly and with the design centre in the UK is a really positive step - let's hope they're given the freedom to develop exciting new models like the GTS!
