I love that you've planned a month in advance. That is one of my goals too especially within the context of my Author buisness & home since they feed into each other 😊 Loving these videos 🎉

Alas, I think I’m giving up that month in advance to prioritize paying off my credit cards. I went into debt to pay for publishing and I really want to pay it off so I can focus on savings.

Hey hey! ❤🤗 I'm not mad at all. You do what's best for you. ❤😊 I will be working on a bills buffer but just to keep in my savings just in case. I like that idea. The more I think about the month-ahead the more I think it should go to credit cards. I do have a small buffer but I think I may be able to adjust other things to keep the buffer strong.

I have LOTS of thoughts about anthologies and was planning on doing a video about them. However, I wanted to wait until my current contract ended in either August or September (I can't remember which at the moment), which means it'll probably be close to December before I get it posted just to be safe. Most of my anthology experiences come from charity anthologies though (they've been good ones for the most part) that follow a central theme but the stories could be any length (within reason) and any genre (again, within reason; I don't think erotica was allowed or excess gore and violence just because of the nature of the various charities).
@ReleasetheWordKraken22 күн бұрын
I can't wait to see your video but understand the desire to wait. I have yet to do a charity one, but the Austen one I just refused for lack of a contract would have been one (as an after thought). As for length, I've always been given a range, which can be difficult. Most editors will ignore the word count if they like the story. Thats when it helps knowing the editor.

I LOVE stickers! ❤ Sorry to hear about India but happy that you learned from your trip! I'm just starting a travel/vacation binder & will probably rework some of the goal amounts (like adding to transportation for local travel). ❤😊
@ReleasetheWordKraken22 күн бұрын
It's the little things like local transportation that we forget about. I was pleased to have the 'unexpected' envelope because thats some of what I needed it for. When I'm planning New Orleans, I'm picking my hotel location to minimize the need for Ubers and Lyfts. I want to be able to walk around the city.

The contract also protects you with Amazon and the other vendors.
@ReleasetheWordKraken23 күн бұрын
I looked at my contracts with other editors/publishers and I didn’t see anything in them about this. Is there something I should consider asking for in my next anthology contract?
@mizzelle7123 күн бұрын
@ReleasetheWordKraken its mostly in the reversion rights when you want to republish it? You usually have to provide documentation to show that you own the rights. If there's no agreement/contract, how do you prove that?
@ReleasetheWordKraken22 күн бұрын
Great point! Yes, there is language in most contracts about any limitations on republishing your story. I’ve included all my anthology stories in my own collections and am typically told to state the original publication on the copyright page. Amazon and other retailers have never dinged me, but having the contract that spells it out would be very helpful if they did.

Nice recap! ❤🤗 I just started my journey in October. I started with 2 binders (high priority & home) then I've expanded since. I've learned that I'm not a retail therapy person, but I hyperfocus (really nose-dive 😂) into things that interest me & feel like i need everything to get started with it. I now set items in carts & leave them for 2 weeks. If I still want it AND haven't made an alternative for it, then I can consider buying it. This has saved me hundreds at this point & challenges me to get creative with what I already have. 😊 I've also learned that I like scratch offs. 😂

I’m happy to share! I have a very simple set up: phone, a few different phone stands, and a MacBook. I record on my phone and then edit on iMovie. I don’t know what options there are for PCs or phones, but there are free video editing apps and software out there. I wanted to share the experiences I was having because I couldn’t find videos on KZfaq about the business side of self/indie publishing. Then I realized the money situation was bigger than my business. I started uploading the videos and determined what I could do.
@bookhuggahАй бұрын
@@ReleasetheWordKraken thank you. I’m doing a bit of what you describe. I am currently collecting the videos from seeing a clone turkey in the neighborhood, as I am curious about it being lonesome and what that means. Then I’ll have to edit them together somehow. Also I like seeing the videos on the business side of authorship. It’s really interesting and I like how you are doing it and being just like this is it so take it or not, and it’s not hard, just a lot of effort in different areas depending on the day and time and other resources.
@ReleasetheWordKrakenАй бұрын
That sounds like a cool idea and thank you for letting me know you like the business related videos. I can find lots of blogs written about some of these topics, but I never see videos. So many people learn from videos and I think there should be more. It’s not difficult to publish books, but you need to know what’s expected if you want to make money or find readers. There are too many books being published for us to hit publish and cross our fingers.

That’s fairly common, unfortunately. HOAs are always about the aesthetics rather than the functionality of people’s lives. Even in a townhouse community, where I expected to have limitations, our property managers get rigid about what we can keep on our back porches.

Go you! Zoe has done so much for the indie romance community and there are so many awesome promos these days - I must remember the old 'do one thing each quarter' thing. I'm so lax with marketing and promo and I am not a fan of social media either lol I still have to find my niche I think! Also, I love that you write both romance and horror - an author after my own heart
@ReleasetheWordKraken2 ай бұрын
I call it "balance" - can't write Happily Ever After without acknowledging the darkness of the world somewhere else. I think Zoe work on the book blasts has gotten a lot of indie authors in front of readers who typically only see traditionally released books. It was the bump my series needed. I was struggling to get 100 reviews on the first book and its been 6 months since my first one. There are over 230 reviews and climbing. The rest of the series is doing much better too. Those of us not loving social media have to find a way to connect with readers.

I also did my first NaNoWriMo in 2004. As a hobby writer, I find it a particularly helpful distraction during election years ;) But I have to admit that I haven't really used the forums or groups in many years. I'm still kind of bummed that I can't do a special "return" for my 20th year.
@ReleasetheWordKraken2 ай бұрын
This year's going to hurt a lot between your 20th anniversary AND an election year. There are a handful of other groups popping up to corral writers. In theory you could still do one more year. It's not dead yet, but there will probably be very little support. I'm curious to see if anyone will take on being an Municipal Liaison given what they're being asked to do.

I fear that will be the struggle for most people. I don’t know if you were involved with local events, but the community was a big part of it for me. It was a good way to meet people when I was new to town. They were people just trying to write, not judge the writing of others.

I gave up on NaNo about five years ago when they did a major website redesign. Before that, I did their events religiously every year for over a decade. I had to leave when the alphabet people hijacked not only the region but the national organization as well. They were very homophobic and more concerned about pronouns rather than genres. It's been like watching a car crash in slow motion as they put more and more resources into younger writers and coddling newbies at the expense of supporting people actually trying to write novels. They abandoned their core mission a long time ago so the demise was inevitable
@ReleasetheWordKraken2 ай бұрын
That shift happened when Baty left long before the website redesign. Hopefully participating as long as you did allowed you to gain enough to keep you writing.

I've loved NaNo for ten years because it pushed me to write more than usual, even when I'm not going by the "traditional" goal. Tbh, after what happened/came out last November, it's like a switch flipped and I just don't care for the organization anymore. I have a pile of t-shirts in my closet I went from wearing every day to not wearing at all in the last six months. It's not just the issues within the organization, I'm tired of how commercialized it has become and every author influencer on KZfaq is trying to make a buck off NaNo. I haven't heard any rumors that it could be shutting down officially, but I did notice they brought old tshirt designs back for this past Camp, which seems a little bit of an indicator that they are flailing right now, and last I checked they still don't have a new Director. I'm interested to see what happens from here.
@ReleasetheWordKraken2 ай бұрын
Since they were overwhelmingly getting things done on the back of volunteers, it will be interesting to see what happens. I was an ML for many years and still have friends who were doing that job but recently left because of the increasing demands put on their shoulders. I think the search is still going on for a new director, but they want someone who can navigate them through this crisis. I don't know if its possible.
