I am 37 and I was advised by a doctor to wear the sling for 25-30 days. It seems too many days for me as I don't have any pain and I already want to start some recovery exercises (currently at day 7 after the injury). Maybe I should get a second opinion from another doctor?

If my shoulder dislocated at basketball training and it wasn't like extremly bad like no fractures,it only dislocated like not in a super traumatic way,and i'm 17,if i will reabilitate for 3 months will it ever be the same if i keep playing after those 3 months or only with surgery,cause now i think it's been a week and i can move it without hurting like,only when it goes too in front or to behind it hurts a litte but i'm trying my best to keep it in it's place cause i have some kind of sling and i keep in there,even after the first day i could move it up and down without any pain,so will it ever be the same without surgery or no,sorry for writeing too much,i'm just worried that i might get it dislocated a again a lot of times if i wanna pursue my dream of becoming a profesional basketball player so i just wanted to know,if u respond i thank u a lot

I had an anterior dislocation at 45 yrs old by a 6-7' fall. Had MRI/X-Ray, had labral tear and Hill-Sachs fracture of about 4mm. First dr "recommended" surgery or I could try PT. If a doctor "recommends surgery, always always always (x3) get that second opinion. Spend the copay, it was well worth it for me as I'm avoiding surgery and almost caved in to the first Dr's "recommendation". Got second opinion, and that dr said he would only recommend PT and almost never does surgery under my curcumstances and age. Stayed in a sling for a month, minus showers and some couch time where i could rest it. All the muscles around the shoulder are super stiff. Did certain mobility movements to keep anything from "locking up" during the sling process. Showering, sleeping, getting dressed, doing anything, was really tough for at least the first month to month and a half. Especially sleeping and trying to find an almost impossible neutral position for the shoulder. Woke up a couple different times in radiating pain after a strong cough or weird movement that irritated the shoulder. Felt like it was never going to improve. Its a long process, but you must be patient. Doing 8 werks of PT, and its been a challenge to get loose, but progress is happening within the first few weeks but expect pain and to be pushed. Expect it to feel like something is broken in yoir shoulder. Lots of inflammation and uneasiness. Stay with it, and respect the healing process, try not to overdo anything when home. If its too much after PT, I took a couple ibuprofen to minimize the inflammation. The general fear is that you are going to immediately dislocate it again either at home or at PT. At the age of 45, the PT person told me tgat everything is so tight that it would pretty much never happen, and the goal is to regain mobility so that I can reach my shoulder up and out fully again. Ive had good progress the first few weeks at PT. Some days at PT are rough and you either cant do any stretching exercises on the next off day or two otherwise you will get zero sleep. That will be the challenge. Try to keep stretching while still being able to sleep. Again, its a slow process. Im not so sure Ill have "full mobility" by the 8 week mark, but will continue with what im doing. Try sleeping on opposite side with pillow support between knees and also letting shoulder rest on pillow somewhere between body and arm (will be completely up to how you like it). Best to keep the shoulder flat on the bed and use one thick and firm pillow on your neck. Ive noticed that anything touching my shoulder or pressing against it irritates it. Expect to be woken up earlier than usual by achiness. You should start seeing slow improvements very little each day. I do recommend supplements such as Vitamin C, D, Zinc, K2, Omega 3, Collagen, MSM, Turmeric (to decrease inflammation) and plenty of protein. Im on the path to recovery and hope to be back to normal again one day soon but realize its a marathon, not a sprint. Feel fortunate that it's not a head or back injury.

How are you doing now? Doing better? Im in my 30s and dislocated my shoulder too. No hill sachs though, so I was lucky. Im in week 5 and I can extend my arm already above my head and to the side. Also external rotation and abducting it, it's not back to full range of motion but, im glad I'm already so far. Hope you are doing well :) This injury sucks.

@@RzRzenith I'm about 3 months along now since the injury. Only recently able to sleep better without the constant aggravation of dull pain in shoulder blade. Would recommend sleeping in a sling at night for as long as you can and counting your blessing every moment that you can actually sleep, only because I've woken up a couple different times to either cough and do a sudden movement and id be in radiating horrible pain throughout the morning/day. The sling may help keep it still at night which is most important. Still doing PT twice a week and I've had good improvement. Dr said I prob won't get back 100% full motion but can raise arm close to straight up. Still working on reaching behind the back, thats my weakness. Hoping to be done with PT by May but we'll see. Def improving overall, thanks for asking. Are you able to reach behind your back?

@@davidb.8948 Im sleeping without a sling since the beginning. Had the sling for one week. Sleeping is not an issue. The first week it was. Mind you ive been going to the gym for two years prior so my back is quite trained. Maybe that is why its less severe with me. Sorry to hear you are still in quite some pain :( hope it heals eventually and you will get even better sleep. I just tried reaching behind my back and yes I can, although my bicep hurts in the process, wont do that for a while. It will get better! Cheers!

@@WakeUp2024 its been 4.5 months after the injury. Still doing PT. The doctor said that I've improved about 10-15% overall in the past 6 weeks. But 25% improvement lifting elbow straight out and up. I've noticed the mobility and ability to do things and lift things has been much better. Sleeping is much much better. Can actually sleep on my back, but also continue sleeping on side. Still have trouble reaching behind but working on this still. Its a very slow process of healing during this type of shoulder injury but most importantly you need to be patient. But also stick to the PT spaced out evenly at least 2 days per week at a good PT location nearby. Its important to keep stretching and building strength in the muscle again as you heal up.

I just dislocated my shoulder tonight, reset it myself. Felt fine for a while but it's quickly became very tight and range of motion decreased. I'm currently working on engaging the shoulder(which relives sooo much discomfort in any position) as well as engaging muscles all throughout my arm and twisting at the wrist slowly while engaging and lastly different shoulder shrugs upward, backward and forward. While not doing this exercises I am trying to reduce movement as much as possible to give chances for muscles to heal more. In a few days to a week, I will expand to internal and external rotations. Wosh I could just go to a doctor but I live in the 3rd world country of America and can't afford the medical bills...

@soulance8342
@soulance8342 6 ай бұрын
@@antoniodaniel5518 I'm doing great, thanks for asking. I spent about a month doing PT(mostly isometrics), once I got some strength back I started slowly expanding range of motion. I was able to do pushups by the 4th week and can now do pull ups and rotate around my arms while hanging from a bar. I was lucky to not damage any ligaments or muscles, I think I damaged the cartilage that connects my shoulder to the socket, (the labrum?) So I've been taking fish oil and trying to keep up a good mobility regimen to keep blood flow going into my shoulder area. Based on the reading and research I've done it seems like I am very lucky to have recovered this well without surgery.

Why do all of these PTs continue to say the same thing? It's not weakness, it's inhibition. The muscles is not firing appropriately, if you get the muscle to fire appropriately then the function will return.

Thank you so much Mike for your informative clips. I'm 52, in pretty good shape and I popped my shoulder surfing. I don't think I tore anything major as the recovery has been fairly painless (unlike my other one in which I ripped the rotator cuff). My goal is to get back into surfing at 12 weeks since the injury and I'm working fairly hard on this. Is this a realistic goal?
