"Dear Valerio -- much of my early life was spent holding the world and the people in it in contempt. It was a position both seductive and indulgent. The truth is, I was young and had no idea what was coming down the line. It took a devastation to teach me the preciousness of life and the essential goodness of the people in it. It took a devastation to reveal the precariousness of the world, of its very soul, and to understand that the world was crying out for help. It took a devastation to understand the idea of mortal value. It took a devastation to find hope. Unlike cynicism, hopefulness is hard earned, makes demands upon us, and can often feel like the most indefensible and lonely place on earth. HOPEFULNESS IS NOT A NEUTRAL POSITION. It is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Each redemptive and loving act, as small as you like -- such as reading to your little boy, or showing him a thing you love, or singing him a song, or putting on his shoes -- keeps the Devil down in the hole. It says the world and its inhabitants have value and are worth defending. It says the world is worth believing in. In time we come to find that this is so. Love, Nick"

I'm not sure that I'll see or hear or read a more affirmative thing in the however many hours I have left to roam the internet. This is extraordinary. We love you too, Nick Cave.

I would lke to JOKINGLY add -- also do not let your little boy listen to Nick Cave records until adulthood. Just sayin' -- "Murder Ballads" ain't exactly hopeful nursery rhymes.

Life was easier, of course i was born in 63. Times have not really changed. Gas prices n shortages. Food prices. Threats of ww3. Riots. The 70s could be laid right present times.

I sing this to myself whenever I'm in a dark place. It's kept me going many a time, and I'm still going so far. Grew up listening to this whole drama on long car journeys and loved it for as long as I can remember - will love it as long as I love I think!

Amazing to me how much Statler content there is This is the first time I've seen this clip! Hardest working Country ensemble ever. They were the best for sure!
@wesclay1420 күн бұрын
The clip was from their appearance on the June 1, 1973 episode of "The Midnight Special" with Paul Williams as the host and they were the only one I think who performed that night that made it big. The other guests were Slade, the Stylistics, Argent, Gunhill Road and Ms. Sidney Jordan.

Lyrics (for sing a long purposes) In western lands beneath the Sun the flowers may rise in Spring, the trees may bud, the waters run, the merry finches sing. Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair. Though here at journey's end I lie in darkness buried deep, beyond all towers strong and high, beyond all mountains steep, above all shadows rides the Sun and Stars forever dwell: I will not say the Day is done, nor bid the Stars farewell.

All that’s gold does not glitter. Not all those who wonder are lost. The old that is strong does not wither. Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes, a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadows shall spring. Renewed shall be the blade that was broken. The crownless again shall be king.

That is not the Isengard tower by the way... That is a very early version that was scrapped. The one you see in all kinds of illustrutations, including a cover by Tolkien himself (and in the movies), as well as that is _described in the book_ , is the actual one. Don't just choose any crappy old thing because it seems old-timey or properly crappy and therefore right to you... That's just annoying.

Man, those orc voices are awful. If there’s one thing the movies did right, it was the casting, except for strider. I can’t choose between this version or the animated movie version, but Peter Jackson Strider was a little too high-pitched for me. This version did have the best Gandolf out of every version.
