Love this one. The philosophy, religion, spiritualism, how it all fits with our perception of reality. Gold! In that light, I would not agree that the universe is infinitely small in resolution. The planck length is the shortest possible physical distance at which anything makes sense. That might change in the future, but quantum mechanics so far, as we understand the world today, says nothing is understandable at that length. At the very least, if there is anything smaller than a planck length, we could never build an apparatus to show that it exists there. It is (literally) immeasurably small, by the laws of physics.

'I don't believe in free will, but also believe it's important we have free will.' I think you've justified this before that it's not actually important that we have free will. It's important that we 'perceive' we have free will. Which does rectify that.

1:46:30 That really changes my perspective about absolute morality. I still think such a system must exist, whether we will know it or not. But maybe it is enough to just say, "This ethical system gets the closest." Thou shalt not kill children-probably the best immediate disqualifier I've ever heard.

Diversity of thought brought us electricity, laws of physics, and knowing the Earth was round without going to space. If you look at it from a religious stand point, most religions agree overall to love your neighbor, don't kill people, and be truthful in your actions. Even in massively diverse religions, some important and constant truths can still be worked out.

Here I am as a bison farmer in central Alberta. My farm finishes 250 head of fat bison per year, and I’m looking for customers in Alberta for finished bison 1/2’s cut for their consumption. I’m also building a meat shop facility for control of processing/value add. You should know that the 750 head we have on our farm would not even exist if people wouldn’t buy the meat. Look at it as a form of conservation also. The land, the animals and nourishment for our bodies… a circle of existence/production that is actually positive on many levels. How is that belief not a good ethic?

You aren’t the problem though. The problem is the million times larger cattle farming that is happening on a global scale that is over inflated past what is healthy not just for our bodies but the planet. 50% of the corn grown in the US is just for cattle feed. We produce too much food of every kind but meat is the most destructive to the environment. I love meat. Best part of any meal. Better than dessert. But we have to eat less of it as a whole or it’s going to kill us.

I can't or won't kill my own meat so I try and buy it from places who humanely raise the meat. I am not perfect but i try to source meat from places who dont allow the animals to not move their entire life and have quality while they are here. Its not cheap unfortunately which is why most people buy .99/lb chicken meat who've never seen outside of their 2 inches of cage. Horrible anyway you split it

I don't think anyone who doesn't want to be vegetarian or vegan can still do a little something to help. Qourn chicken and other brands make good meat alternatives. I am a meat eater through and through but i occasionally offset my meat dinners with vegetarian/vegan options and they aren't bad. It doesn't hurt me. Taste good enough. Anyone eating a chicken nugget or dino can sub a veggie option and barely notice with the amout of dipping sauces we use.

@@FreePete it was not you who said it to be clear. I do believe that the existing paradigm is the reality and thus the framework in which we must act. Unless we can change the veil of ignorance when it comes to the generalized populace. I do admire the optimism because it is part of a healthy psyche and necessary to push us into what was once thought impossible. In my view short of rigging the lottery of talent at birth there is not a effective system to create a large enough wave of change.

I think your opinions on religion are somewhat ignorant (I am not religious). Religion was necessary to get society and humankind through some of the most unimaginably awful times, in which it was used to unite and inspire. I think the view of disregarding it’s merit as you are above needing a belief system, where your ability to have one is provided to you in some sense by the society you live in, which arguably stands on the foundations built by religious forefathers, is contradictory. (Just my view, no hate)
@FreePete
@FreePete Күн бұрын
I do not underestimate the value of systems of belief. They are very powerful and useful. Otherwise they would not persist into the present. There is much utility to abdicating your own responsibility to think for yourself if you are too dumb or too lazy to do so. Many people are. For those who aren't I would hope they aspire to actively build the future rather than let other people build it for them.
@JeatBunkie

@@FreePete hmm, see that’s where I think we differ. People’s faith seldom comes from lack of intelligence or laziness. Yes, often times it arises from necessity (life can be shit and it’s hard to go on thinking your suffering is meaningless and there is no afterlife etc) and I would concede that for some they just blindly follow and don’t question what they are told to think, but you can’t assume that of all religious people, it’s too blanket. I just think you are very quick to judge and that is not the mentality of an enlightened person, as you espouse to be, or at least aspire to be in some philosophical sense from what I can tell.
@FreePete
@FreePete 21 сағат бұрын
It is not for me to judge, in the same way I do not accept judgment. I invite, encourage and applaud others for choosing to think for themselves, or choosing to let others think for them. But I do not choose that. I love freedom and it goes both ways. I have to give it to recieve it.

@@JeatBunkie also, when he's discussing this, remember that it is implied he doesn't mean literally every religious person is lazy. He's saying that many are. He could add a disclaimer saying that after ever statement he makes, but maybe for the sake of ease he's trusting that anyone listening to him will give him the credit of not being ignorant enough to be making blanket statements

4:31 just putting it out there. There is a delineation between the practical know how and ethics when it comes to outsourcing meat. A lot of people see no ethical dilemma outsourcing meat because the people who hunt the meat need other things hence bartering and trade. It’s not because they think it horrible it’s because they don’t want to waste time learning the practical skill. Now the people who outsource solely because they have a ethical framework that views killing animals to collect meat as wrong would be violating their framework through outsourcing. Which only matters to them if there was a situation where easily outsourced meat became scarce.

RE the discussion at the start of the video: when people talk about plant agriculture killing animals through deforestation and pesticides, I always wonder how they think >90% of animal agriculture happens... It takes a lot more crops, land, and pesticides to make an equivalent amount of meat as it does for plants. It's simply thermodynamics, the animal is a middle man who has to take their cut of the energy made by the plants. Sure plant agriculture has a lot to improve, but it's no contest in terms of environmental impacts of food production at a mass scale. If anyone is interesting in learning more about this, I'd really recommend looking at Our World in Data: Environmental Impacts of Food Production.
@sam-r7w
@sam-r7w Күн бұрын
Also another common claim is that most of the land that animals are grown on isn't suitable for crops - this simply isn't true in most places. Common agricultural practice in Europe and the USA include animals grown in lots and fed crops like soy and alfalfa - crops which often lead to deforestation and water shortages respectively. And then these issues are blamed on vegans because they're plants even if the largest consumers by far are meat producing animals...
