I was just talking to an old lumber shop owner about this last week. He had a customer last summer that ordered an entire shipment of kiln dried pressure treated lumber. Normally pressure treated is so damn wet that it comes around 20% moisture or more around here, so the 6% or less at kiln drying left all of the lumber perfectly straight. He said the guy came back later and said that it was worth every penny of the added expense because of the reduced waste and frustration of dealing with twisted lumber. As far as I know it can also be painted immediately since it is dry as well. Sometimes, kiln drying can be beneficial for reasons not apparent at first. On the other hand, if you have to deal with Osage orange, it is MUCH easier to cut when green than when it is completely dry

Thanks for the info. You mentioned - its all about getting your experience. That includes for me to get started and make own learnings. Weather might be different / climat as well, here in europe might be different like in US, altitude, area where is a lot of humidity etc... but that i absolutely can underline is - you need to have a flat base - I invested to little time in having a solid and flat base as i started and after 2 years using the beams i saw that they are everything but not flat at all. Maybe something to add i have learned as well - keep woodstack accessable, especially if you mix speciec / projects in one stack. Im not running a lumber business so its not that critical if i spent a whole day in pick and placing boards from on stack to another one to access the lumber im seaking for - but what i have learned is, that if lumber is not dead straight, and if you re-stack them somewhere else, the stack will get instabile and will not be so solid standing as before. What else have i learned - if you stack lumber on concrete floor, consider concrete like grass - it will drag moisture up into the lumber - i always use a 10x10cm = 4x4" at least to get it way from the ground. If you dont do this - your 1-2 very bottom boards will look like the 2-3 top boards if you dont use any cover. What i have learned is that even if you do everything right, there will be lumber which twists und turns, bows and what not - no matter what you are doing - accept it, if usable for something - good, otherwise dont mess around with it - it will burn and heat your home. Sticker stain - i alway try to use the same lumber for sticker the boards a from - i know that if you want to fight powder post beatle etc... that not the best.

You definitely can, just take your time familiarizing yourself with how it works and how to set it accordingly. I’m not sure I’d jump in with walnut from the start because of the value but it’s easier than drying oak. Good luck!

Enjoy your videos! What is your opinion on solar kilns?
@hillcustomlumber
@hillcustomlumber 10 күн бұрын
I started with a solar kiln, they work great…as long as the sun is shining! It all depends on what you’re trying to do. For hobby use they are great and cheap to operate, but when you move into a commercial application they’re to inconsistent to be able to hold a schedule and produce enough volume. This might be a good topic for a future video, honestly I haven’t thought of that original solar kiln in years.

@@hillcustomlumber appreciate your reply, I have had mine set up for about 4 years now, and the biggest problem is like you already stated, trying to keep a consistent temperature.. if you did a short video on solar kilns I'm sure a lot of hobby sawyers like myself would enjoy it. Thanks for the great videos you do , they are a wealth of information

Construction lumber and boards SPF. I air dry all of that...if there is wane I use a knife to remove any bark. Stays bug free. People around here do live edge slabs and air dry it, but the bark is still on it and the bugs get under it. I've heard of bed frames being made with air dry lumber and they lay down at night to hear crunching lol.

Very good summary of when to have wood kiln dried and when wood does not need to be kiln dried. Maybe you could weigh in on the following additional items? * I had heard that kiln drying collapses the cell structure in wood, which means that kiln dried wood will be less likely to pick up moisture from the surrounding environment than air dried wood, so kiln dried wood will be more dimensionally stable than air dried wood when subjected to variable humidity levels. * For a similar reason, steam bending wood is best done with wood that has not been kiln dried, as kiln dried wood will react to steam bending differently than air dried wood - the kiln dried wood will tend to remain stiff when the air dried wood becomes flexible. * I had read that kiln drying, at least with woods like walnut, will cause the sap wood to become darker, almost as dark as the heart wood, while that does not happen with air dried walnut. I believe that I heard one sawmill operator in a video indicating that this is due to a special process, possibly a fuming process, during kiln drying.
@hillcustomlumber
@hillcustomlumber 10 күн бұрын
I can’t really weigh in on the first point, I’ve never heard that but it could be true. All wood will pick up moisture if exposed to it. Green and air dried wood are preferred for bending because they have more flexibility than kiln dried. The process you describe for Walnut is called steaming. It blends the sapwood and heartwood. The heartwood loses some color and the sapwood gains it. I’m personally not a big fan of it because it dulls the color overall. I prefer the natural color of the wood which can be preserved by kiln drying without steaming.

Another good learning video. I’ve commented in a few related video’s regarding small shop milling of logs to lumber. In my Amazon list I put in some bed bug heating tents and I’m thinking I must have gotten that idea from you? Sorry to ask you to repeat possibly but would that application work for a hobbyist to rid the small wood parts from possible bugs? Do you think it’s even necessary in general? Thank you.
@hillcustomlumber
@hillcustomlumber 10 күн бұрын
The minimum requirement to sterilize wood from powderpost beetle(the #1 concern) is 133 degrees for 24hrs. If you can maintain that it should be effective. As far as if it’s a concern it really depends on how you’re sourcing your wood. Green wood is actually less of a threat than air dried wood for bug infestation, but of course you can’t really work with green wood for most projects.
@ericerf6837
@ericerf6837 10 күн бұрын
@@hillcustomlumber thank you for that. I’ll look into the specs on the heat of those bug tents. I don’t know how the average guy would be able to achieve this otherwise. I put the boards on stickers in my garage attic which gets super hot and I put a few fans on the stacks. The moisture content came down really quickly. I pick up a lot of interesting and fun facts from your videos so thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Congratulations on the one year anniversary of your KZfaq journey. I enjoy watching your channel for the no-nonsense, tell it like it is approach that you seem to implement for everything you do, from tree farming, tree harvesting, sawmilling, kiln drying, woodworking, and equipment repair. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with KZfaq viewers, even if I will only use a small fraction of that knowledge. You have some very nice examples of well used, heavy duty U.S. manufactured woodworking equipment - I enjoy seeing that equipment in action. Do you plan to upgrade to a larger sawmill, such as an LT70? Those sawmills sure seem to cut trees into boards, even hickory, very quickly based on what I have seen on a few other sawmill channels.

I live in a big city, will never have a sawmill despite massive interest in what goes on with it. I experience it through what you offer here. I take the small logs I cut and mill them on my 14” and harvest wood for my woodworking that way….it’s satisfying and is the closest I’ll get to the real thing. Your channel is entertaining but mostly I enjoy what you teach, both in terms of woodworking but also in how your operation works. I also respect you do not sell products through the channel affiliates but if it came to that, I get it. I’d just be gone. Anyway, appreciate what your channel and your work brings to someone like me who can not experience it firsthand. Good luck going forward. Thanks.
