i am suspecting a wheel bearing or the rear trunnion bushings. more likely the wheel bearing. of the two wheel bearings per axle shaft.... i suspect more the needle bearings. it's not a whining sound, or a ticking sound. it's literally a bumping sound, which leads me to my diagnosis. if i happen to be right.... stop driving as further driving will ruin the axle shaft if it hasn't been already. if i am right, there are longer needle bearings available than what the factory installed providing a more beefy roller bearing. it's not a terrible job, but a very very heavy duty axle puller is needed. --- if it's the trunnion bushings, you lucked out as those are vert easy to check and replace. on my car i had a whine which turned into a bumping sound eventually. mine turned out to be the differential pinion bearings eventually gave out catastrophically after whining for quite s0me time. more whine on engine over run. yours is not the same sound i had.

Gear meshing in the diff ? If the input/output shafts aren't located correctly due to bearing wear, the gears won't be meshing at the correct angle. Are you able to measure the frequency of the noise and relate it to the axle speed ?

That Spitfire is the quintessential sports car. It's not a performance car, it's a sports car and there's a big difference. I bet you feel like you're doing 100 mph when you're doing 50 mph, especially with the hood down. It's the sort of car you throw a toothbrush and a bottle of wine into and head off for a dirty weekend in Brighton with your casual bird. Great fun!

Have you checked the rear trunions for vertical play, when the bushings in them collapse they can vibrate through the drive train and load up the transverse spring causing stress on driveline components. Cheaper than pulling diff apart and as they require regular maintenance and greasing and bushings in them collapse they are a common failure point and worthwhile to update anyway on any spitfire if you don’t know their age/condition.

Send the whole rear axle of for a revamp. Sounds like a damaged crown wheel or something in the diff

Sounds to me to input shaft into the diff and that noise is the teeth on back lass I personally would pull the rear diff out and inspect it may just need adjustment

Sounds like diff - pinion loose. Sounds like gear teeth grinding together (when you turned it manually in the first segment of the video). The road test knock sounds like one of the universal joints (you called them "bearings") on a driveshaft. Stop driving it! If a joint goes at speed you're in proper trouble. Yes, I had the problem and a UJ went in my driveway. The handbrake cable got wrapped around the end of the driveshaft and the car locked up. UJ is easy enough to replace. It might also be the hub bearing. Very hard to fix without the right gear. If I were you I'd plan for a stripdown of the rear axle. A note about feeling for play in the UJs: This joint is under lateral stress from the suspension so it might not feel like it has play in-situ, especially when the back end of the car is jacked up and suspension is in fullk droop.. It's a weak design, as the driveshaft is acting as a suspension arm as well as transmitting rotational force to the wheels. Again, I think you'll have to strip it down, or at least pull the hubs / axles off so you can test all of it for play. You have been oiling the trunnions I hope...?

Check the wheel bearings by jacking the cars up and rock the wheel by grabbing the top and bottom of the tire. That bearing can transfer the noise threw the half shaft to the diff am make you think its the out out bearing on the diff. If you feel its the out put bearing on the diff you can dissconect the half shafts from the diff and check if there is play in the bearings from under the car. I would also check the input shaft bearing on the diff.

Typical Jaguar issue. Usually it's watery dropping from the ceiling directly on the gear lever and it ruins the relay securing the parking position. On my S-Type is a manual release if you remove a cover behind the gearbox panel. You can insert you hand and reach a little knob, manipulate the knob and it releases the gear lever even if the relay is stuck. This is not a cure. You might need to change the relay or re grease the mechanism to make it work as intended.

I would guess that if the switch on the brake pedal is faulty it should also affect the rear brake lights showing it's an issue with the switch. If the selector release solenoid is worn it can be occasionally weak and not retract properly not allowing the shifter to move from park. Probably easer to replace the shifter assembly than source and replace just the solenoid and they don't appear to be too expensive on FleaBay.

Had this on my 2004 Super V8 twice, on both occasions it was rectified by fitting a second hand shifter unit, it was to do with the electronics under the shifter. My main jaguar dealer diagnosed the issue on both occasions and fitted the part for me, about 5 years apart actually. A used shifter unit can normally be found on ebay . They also told me the shifter is different for a supercharged jaguar for some reason so double check this when searching for it. The most recent one to be fitted was last summer, the problem does get worse as time goes by, at one point mine may have been once every couple of weeks, then it eventually became once or twice a day sometimes, and as you say, normally in a petrol station haha.

1. You bought a jag this is what you should expect 😂 2. Check battery and solenoids, check if points are corroded and if it's healthy check wiring - also if you drive particularly violently like racing etc you should check if any terminals have been knocked slightly loose

I've found stepping on brake then (in no rush) moving gear stick left followed by waiting for a little 'click' works well on my XJ where this occurs fairly often. Slow and steady wins the race. Happened on my S-Type R back in the day, not very often but as you say always chose a really unfortunate moment. Would take much longer (more attempts) to resolve also. Specialist suggested a new circuit board at the time but frequency (1 or 2 a year) didn't justify the expense.

It’s the J Gate. It may need replacing. It happened to me.
@colmoconnor1349
@colmoconnor1349 5 күн бұрын
Assuming your battery is in good order and you have replaced the earth points ( they all need replacing at this age ) it could be a faulty solenoid . The solenoid is under the gear selector trim on the left hand side almost parallel to the 5 position in the J-gate. You can also manually release the gear lever from Park by using a flathead screwdriver to press the solenoid slightly forward. As this fault is intermittent though, it would seem to be a battery/charge issue.

Both fans lined up like that would have been cancelling each other out as would have created a dead air pocket in between as the electric fans would have pushed more air then the engine fan could have coped with so u done right with removing it

My 2003 XJ6 has this warning come up occasionally. It seems to be after it has been raining a lot. When I bought it about 4 years ago it had a air suspension fault but no warning and was just not sitting right. Under the warranty they sent it to a Jaguar specialist and it was returned fixed but now occasionally it says air suspension fault but there is nothing wrong at all. If I have not driven it for a while it might come up "car too low" but after a few seconds it's got back up and is fine. Don't you find most things that go wrong with a Jag are sensor faults . Car is fine . So wish there were no sensors like a MK2 😇
@Chris_GasolineGarage

Hi, if I leave the car in the garage and don’t use it for a couple of months it gets irritable with me and I get loads of sensor faults. I clear them all. I’ll get an odd one for a few days of using it and then they’re all gone again, for the next six months and then the next time I park it up again I start same problem again 😂

Excellent . Commented on your first video not realising it wasn't new then found this . Fingers crossed mine is the same and I can make it as easy as yours looked. Had a wheel sensor fault too and watched a KZfaq video saying only takes a half hour . Spent nearly 2 hours trying to get the one 8mm bolt out. Still not out hoping the impact driver arriving tomorrow works . Thanks for your video .
