Bought the "Invincible" last week. Fantastic shunter and heavy hauler. The gearing makes it quite slow in comparison to some over geared equivalents but I think the Hawthorn is realistic in this regard. Bought mine to shunt across points which it does better than any Terrier I have ever possessed. Great model!

Its a lovely model, very well made and has a fantastic mechanism. I do have a few gripes though. First is that they have made a one size fits all generic model based on one individual locomotive whereas the real things were specified by the buyer so there was a multitude of variations. This is where things like buffer size comes in, missing running plate steps, guard irons that shouldn't be there etc. My biggest issue is the very poor livery renditions. The NCB No8 should be much darker, there are colour photos of the real thing, the model should be the same colour as Rapidos 'Holly Bank No.3'. The same goes for the green models, 'Asbestos' in particular is nowhere near the same colour as the real thing is. I can understand the reasoning of keeping costs down by doing one generic tooling with just an open cab back variant, but to get the liveries so very wrong spoils what would otherwise be a brilliant model.
@AdiPullen9 күн бұрын
Hi Simon I hope you are well Thank you for your comment. I personally dont know if it right or wrong. It seem to be a little generic from what i seen from other reviews of the model. My hornby b2 peckett is a lot darker in livery. I've spoken to a guy who models ncb stuff and he said too colour was never the same. Am also sorry if i missed anything or got it wrong. Again thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP
@Simon-Davis9 күн бұрын
@@AdiPullen You are right, the colour of NCB locomotives did vary a lot. Different coal board areas used different colours too, so while one area used Blue, another would use Green and another would use Red or Black for example. Most of the time they were different shades of dirt! The trouble with Dapols number 8 is that colour photos exist, showing a very different colour to the model. Have a look at this photo of the real engine. content-eu.invisioncic.com/y320084/monthly_2024_05/NCBno8-RSHN-78071954.jpg.a99a71c1d696b2c1f2bf2af96e90d284.jpg
@Simon-Davis9 күн бұрын
@@AdiPullen You are right, NCB locomotives wore just about every colour and also those colours would fade and get filthy over time, making them even more changeable. Some of these 0-4-0 models are nearly perfect, models like the Footplate Models special commission 'MTE no3' and the red 'Invincible' are some of the best industrial models yet made. That is what makes other releases of this model such a shame, because they have proven they can do them so well. I don't mind the details being slightly wrong, smaller buffer heads maybe, as some of the changes needed would require a full retool and that would make the models more expensive overall. Dapol getting the paint colour so wrong is rather poor though IMHO. The model of 'Asbestos' looks very off when you compare with the real engine as preserved at Chasewater, mostly because of the paint. Google search "RSHN 7807 number 8" to see what the NCB number 8 locomotive really looked like (comments won't let me link to an online photo apparently). You can see the different buffers, that the dome and water filler are swapped around with different handrails to reach them, but also that the blue paint is so much darker. Keep up the reviews, they are enjoyable to watch!
