Great information Kevin. I haven't seen a groundpod with a gimble before. Gives me ideas. I get reasonable results supporting my 200-600 mm lens on one knee. I have been looking for a suitable beanbag that would add more support in this position and I haven't come across something suitable. The one you use with the handles looks worth checking out. Unfortunately even in Perth, the capital of our state (yes it was named after your Perth) the photographic shops are not as well stocked up as one would like. But knowing something is available is half the battle👍

Kevin thanks. Absolute superb photos of this mythical little bird. The females 'wear lipstick' :). Good one :). Easy to remember. I saw one the exact moment my family and I arrived at a camping site along the Belgian Semois, last week. During the next few days, I spent several 4-hour sessions to spot another one. I did eventually run into luck, even if it landed at least 60 meters, 65 yards away in a tree on the opposite bank. I photographed lots of wagtails to have something on my hands while sitting in the waiting room. Believe me, it was time well spent :). They are great practice. So fast, while they pluck flies from the skies like berries :). I only brought a tiny camo blanket with me. Thanks to your crash course I'm now aware that I need to hide much better. It seemed to me that the noise from people talking, sometimes yelling, drifting down the river in kayaks or inflated colorful stuff, scraping the riverbed, wasn't supporting my chances much, and I need to improve on location scouting a lot to say the least. Nevertheless, these first sessions felt magical. Thank you for the great instructions. BTW, my cam-settings checked yours completely (that part I got correct myself :) on a Nikon Z9, using a 100-400.

Most of the steps are really just common sense but like they say common sense is quite, rare probably because we take it for granted and look for a "something more" trick instead. It is good to be reminded to take basic common sense steps seriously. Birds in flight have always been my weakness and I just can't seem to get it. I have two favourite excuses😁I only do videos. But the principals are basically the same😐And the 200-600 lens is is just so damn heavy I can't keep it up for long, and it gets more shaky the longer I try. So that's patience out of the window😬So apart from training with weights or practicing holding my breath if you have a "something more" trick up your sleeve for someone like me, I would greatly appreciate it😁👍

@@warwickwolf3999 That's actually not a bad suggestion. We do have a Sony 4K FDD-AX 53 Handycam which is similar but newer and I believe has better tracking and stabilisation and it can do pretty good 4K at 25 fps in good light. Most of the videos we have published have actually been filmed with that camera. We bought it mainly because we needed an easy to handle camera to film our terrestrial orchids in motion. Some of the orchids are tiny and filming in semi macro while moving is quite a challenge and it has done quite a reasonable job we think. We publish the orchid videos as "Shorts" and our long form videos are mostly of birds for which it has also done a reasonable job. Of course the detail and dynamic range of the camcorder can't compare to our Sony A7 SIII but the ease of handling and reaction time needed to shoot a bird that just pops up in front of you when you are walking in the forrest is just a dream with the camcorder and you come home with a ton of reasonable footage. While with the A7 you get gorgeous footage but you miss a lot because by the time you get the heavy 200-600 mm lens up and in focus the bird is gone. And you know what it's like... I just want beautiful sharp images😐

Had a lot of luck this summer. Set up 3 different perches in my butterfly/hummingbird garden. They have been visiting recently (located in Rhode Island in NE US). In studying them, they seem to stay on the same perch and on occasion will fly off and quickly return to the same spot. To get them in flight I just increase the aperture, widen the zoom and wait for the return. I know it's not the same as getting inflight but when looking at it, no one would know if I crop out the perch. BTW my mom was from Edinburgh and came over with my dad after WWII. Last name was Heatlie. In doing family tree it looks like some of my relatives spelled the name Hatley. From 1670 to 1860 family lived in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, then Edinburgh. Great videos!

I enjoyed your post. I had thought about trying to capture and tried many times. I love to capture birds in flight. After watching your video I tried in my back yard and got a couple of decent ones but I need more practice. I used the settings that you suggested. I have a Nikon D850 and a Nikon 28-300mm lens. Shutter speed 1/3200, Aperture f/8.0 and auto ISO. Thank you very much, now all I have to do is practice.

A great step by step explanation, Kevin. One change I would suggest for the placement of feet, is that I feel it is best when the expected flight path is known, to position the stance more to where the bird is going to travel to rather than to where it starts from. Thus, when reaching the firing position, my body is set much more comfortably and more stable. I also use this type of stance when taking the series of frames for creating a panorama photograph.

You share some great ideas: window rest >in Australia we have what they ''pool noodles" ; pool/water personal float devices that would be just as effective; and cheap!! I have always thought (hunting/shooting days) that wild animals will see movement before anything anything else. But yes, never look up if hiding from an aircraft , so all your gear does make a lot of sense for serious wildlife photography. camera ready: I read a tip years ago (film days) to always have the longest lens on the camera when traveling by car. Camera presets/custom sets are a god send in digital cameras.

5:06 your gear: not sure too many would consider gear like that as ''minimal''😇 Thank you, something way out of my comfort zone. I have trouble photographing (never shoot/shot ;) 😡) dead dragon flies so take this as a ground up grain of salt in a dust storm --- a few years back I had a blue plastic tarp opened out in the back yard and that attracted dragonflies from where I don't where. The Murray river (Australia) is 5-7 kms away. . I put a stick on the tarp and naturally they landed on the stick . Maybe having them come to you is better than them going where they normally go. Similar works by putting water in a suitable place for bush bird photos --- I don't have the patience :( Please; leave the music out. That is the main reason I turn off so many (likely good) KZfaq photography video. Not to mention motor mouth American .
