Could you explain more what you mean please? I'm completely new to all of this😅
@bottmar1
@bottmar1 2 күн бұрын
@astrid5870. Whenever you file, disc sand, belt sand or grind a new edge lt is usually better to have the edge towards you while use your tool of choice away from you. Otherwise you are rolling a thin section of metal over that has to be removed on the other side of the blade. That rolled metal is called a burr. This applies to knife sharpening too. With filing you may not get much of a burr but filing is only good for blades that have no stone nicks or damage. I usually grind my blades by clamping the blade in a vice so that the edge is pointed up and then grind with a 4 1/2" Harbor Freight electric grinder with sparks flying down. You can see the edge the whole time you are grinding and know immediately when to stop removing metal. Those grinders are as little as $15 and the stones are as little as $1 a piece. All the other methods I see on KZfaq are either harder to do or more costly. After 54 years at metal working in businesses and in my own auto repair shop I am not new to proper procedures on blade sharpening. I hope this helps.

Ha ha! Love it! My mom did this in a weirdly shaped farmhouse in New Zealand in 1962. The flooring shop cut the vinyl floor sheet to her template made of newspapers, cardboard and tape. The new floor fit perfectly! My buddies and I cut scale models of electronic component in 1993 to play with various PCB designs (CAD software wasn't really helpful tool at the time). We called it "playing paper dolls." Worked great. I'm tickled to see the technique of making a template is still a thing! Some technologies stand the test of time! GREAT VIDEO! Thank you.

on the second oil change, after 5 years, the oil is full of what seems like aluminum powder with some sparkly magnetic steel bits mixed in. still works, but there's a lot of blow-by escaping through the vent in the oil cap, and its days are probably numbered. my guess is old oil + cold weather = oil starvation. change your oil more often than I did, everybody.

Can we plant right away after mixing
@CroakyOak
@CroakyOak 3 ай бұрын
As long as the mix is *fully saturated* with water, then yes you could plant right after mixing. Although . . . Trying to get any remaining dry material to wet-out after planting is a true pain in the buns. Therefore, I have usually waited a day or two to make extra sure the sphagnum peat moss has completely rehydrated. The extra day also gives any excess water time to drain from the pot. Good luck with your plants and thanks for watching and commenting.

Can I use this on rhododendrons
@CroakyOak
@CroakyOak 3 ай бұрын
Probably. I only say that because I can’t imagine a situation where this mix would actually have a detrimental effect on a plant. However my knowledge about flowering plants like rhododendrons is minimal and I recommend you do some more research. Granular fertilizer optimized for acid loving plants would be less work and most likely less expensive too. Happy gardening! Thanks for watching and commenting.

I use Neptune's Harvest a LOT, they are fantastic. Is there a reason why you use the two separate bottles (fish and seaweed) instead of NH's fish and seaweed blend?
@CroakyOak
@CroakyOak 3 ай бұрын
The total N-P-K numbers aren’t *exactly* the same. Originally I was using dry kelp which was more hassle than the liquid kelp. And I’ve always ended up with a partial bottle of one or the other left at the end of the season. I suspect the combined product would work similarly. One less bottle is less work and less expense. Try the combined fish & seaweed and see what happens. Properly diluted you won’t hurt your plants. Good luck. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Do you have thoughts on also adding coffee grounds to the mix to also help acidify the soil the bit and add a little more organic matter? Could it make it *too* acidic? thanks!

I have no idea what effect coffee grounds would have on this mix. So, adding any coffee grounds to the mix would be strictly experimental on your part. Blueberries have unique growing requirements and only thrive in what is usually regarded as poor soil. Part of the challenge of growing blueberries is wrapping your head around just how different those soil conditions are versus those found in a typical vegetable garden. This mix works well. I’ve been using it for years. Although it works best when paired with the fertilizer I presented in a different video on this channel. Thanks for watching and commenting.

This is true. The only thing I would change is the bark. Bark is good but it will decompose and use up oxygen in the soil. It is a little more expensive but cinder or pummice is a better option.
@CroakyOak
@CroakyOak 3 ай бұрын
I really curious, have you actually gotten this formula change to work? Because in my experience, pine bark is slow to decompose and pumice is about triple the cost of pine bark nuggets. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@davidkoba
@davidkoba 3 ай бұрын
@@CroakyOak Well on a large scale opperation cinder here in hawaii is a better option because I am able to leave the plants in the pot 3x longer. Also when trasplanting I don't have to remove the dead soil. Pine bark is useful for only one reason. It provides drainage and oxygen exchange. Once it starts to decompose both of those things dissapear. Pine bark will last six months. Nuseries use it because they will sell their plants in six months and the bark is cheap, light, and does the job. If I may direct you to a video to learn about soil look up Gary's best gardening chanel and watch his video on perfect soil. It changed everything for me.

is this mixture one-third of each? You didnt specify the amount of each one in the bed.
@CroakyOak
@CroakyOak 4 ай бұрын
The basic mix is: 1 part sphagnum peat moss 1 part pine bark mini nuggets Then: add enough water to wet thoroughly Dry peat moss is slow to absorb water so *mixing* the water in while mixing the two ingredients is faster and easier than trying to saturate a pot full of dry mix. Trying to get a large pot full of bone dry mix to fully hydrate could take days. Thanks for watching and commenting.
