That is definitely one of my favorite ferry hops. I think the most scenic is Bremerton to Seattle. We love the fast ferry too, but whenever guests come to town from California… We always take the long route from Bremerton to Seattle because I want them to see the islands and all of that in slow motion! You mention that the harbor of Bellingham is very industrial. Actually, it used to be a lot worse. In the 70's there was a pulp mill that put out a horrible smell. A student newspaper at Western Washington University was called the "Tuna Gas" because that's what it smelled like. I think they closed down the pulp mill about 2000, and now they have mostly removed all the parts of it and turned it into parks or public buildings.

I'm enjoying my second Bellingham video of yours! It's interesting that north Bellingham is flat while the southern part of town is mountainous. A friend in Bellingham explained to me once that those hilly parts of southern Bellingham are part of the Cascade Mountains, and actually the San Juan Islands are, too! You just mentioned that a great thing is how close it is to Canada. Actually not necessarily. That Bellingham friend said that he doesn't go to Canada very much because sometimes they won't let you in. Canada has pretty strict borders. My friend uses a bicycle. Canadian immigration seems to be a little bit skeptical of anyone who doesn't have a car. When I went in on a Greyhound bus in 1994 they almost didn't let me in. I only got in because I had several major credit cards. When I went in at Windsor, Ontario in 2003 they let me in with no problem because I had a rental car. But even a friend who went by ferry to Victoria with her car was not allowed to disembark because she had a lot of stuff in the back, and they were afraid she was trying to move to Canada.

I would probably use the entrance to the east of I-5, way less busy. We would use the back road entrances back in the day when I went on trips with the Navy and we had a big white bus. Most of the time they would just wave us through, a few times we had to get out and put our bags through x-ray. Pre 9/11 Canadian women would come down and drink on base, times were for sure different 25-30 years ago!

Silver city Idaho is one of the best preserved mining towns. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, which allows its residents to do routine maintenance on their property. Being a historically registered town also prevents any modern signage or construction of new buildings. It may appear worn down to some. But given the age of the area and the harsh winters, we endure it looks pretty good. But you will never see this area modernized. And the roads will always be bumpy! All buildings are privately owned. The town is definitely not a ghost town. The Owyhee county sheriffs office maintains a regular presence in the area.

I was employed as a nuclear chemical operator at Hanford Atomic Works. I drove this exact same stretch of road, the bypass highway, more than any other road in my entire life and second place isn't remotely close. The comments section is wrong. There are two "bumper to bumper" traffic jams per day on this highway. Hanford reservation is the Tri-Cities largest employer, and the bypass highway is the only commute path. Every bit as bad as Seattle. Trust me, I had a girlfriend that lived in Seattle, and I made the 4.5-hour trip a couple times a month and I have seen my share of Seattle's I-5 traffic jams. Finally, it is very common to curse at all the stop lights and no, there isn't a faster alternative route. The Tri Cities is a semi-arid desert that typically surpasses 100 degrees for 30+ days a year. The spring pollen dries out and becomes airborne seasonally early and it feels like the allergen capital of the world. Add in some thick, seasonally blown in forest fire smoke and breathing becomes a chore. Not recommended for folks with asthma.

Actually, Old Town Bellingham is right about where your video starts. Below the old court house. There are two old buildings there that were built in the 1850's. One an old courthouse that is really small. It's the oldest brick building in Washington. I think it might be used as an art gallery today. There is also the Pickett House, which is a house built at that time where, believe it or not, Confederate George Pickett lived. It's not far from that little courthouse. The reason Fairhaven, which is lovely, is considered the historic part of Bellingham is because the old buildings there are a lot bigger and have been preserved more.
