Muslims today are either deliberately unaware of the absence of verses in the Quran that almost certainly do not contain universal violence. Their understanding of Islam is based only on what other Muslims teach them. Muslims in the West, for example, are often encouraged to think of their religion as another religion that teaches the virtues of peace, love and tolerance. They were quite surprised and embarrassed to find that the Quran and their bloody Islamic history said otherwise. Muslims in modern times today use personal choice to interpret their scriptures' call to war according to their own moral preconceptions about the violence they are being commanded to do. Many of their Islamic scholars fulfill this preference with weak arguments that ignore historical facts and are generally unexamined. And this is what caused many Muslims to blindly believe in Islam. However, it's important to note that the problem is not bad people, but bad ideology.
