I spit out my coke when I saw this on TV.... then Newhart did it again with his reunion special for the Bob Newhart Show, with the Larry Darrell and Darrell characters popping up

This has to be the most clever finale of any TV show in history. I don't think any future show will ever top it.

I saw the ending live on tv. Our local channel Upstate New York cut to commercial and we missed the last 15-20 seconds. They played the ending on the local news. Bad mistake. Really enjoyed the show and the finale was great.

As was said with the recent passing of Donald Sutherland...he did what he loved, and he loved what he did! R.I.P. Bob Newhart!

My dad and I use to watch this show together for the dog fight scenes. Instead of calling my dad father or the like I called him “Pappy” in honor of Greg “Pappy” Boyington….he considered that an honor.

This story changes slightly with the retelling. It was best told when they both told it together. This version has a better beginning, although I always wonder...why didn't they complain about the lunch timing? Why didn't they get to leave 15 minutes earlier and make up the time somehow? Both had substantial clout over there, although they couldn't get phones, but that's another story...

War is very strange sometimes…aside from the war if these two would have met in civil life they probably would have been very good friends…and oh yes he never gave Boyington the rice wine after he handed him the chocolate 🍫 🤔

This is unbelievable if it is 2 % true. I know British and German pilots knew each other in WW1 . Its sound heroic and patriot, glorious! Was it really ? These were not sword fights or wrestling my matches. These were young men killing each other wasting lives and money. Thou shall not kill?

I met the real Pappy in 1977 at a small airshow in Vancouver, WA (Evergreen Field). He wasn't a very pleasant man, smoked like a train and really didn't seem to want to be there signing autographs. A friend of mine and General Anderson, said he was an unhappy man and nearly broke. Pretty sad state for a war hero of our country.

If only... Id been born a the right time. I don't know if these pilots knew it at the time, but this was the pinnacle of dog fighting. With planes fast and maneuverable enough to get close, and before missiles. This was it, right here. If I could live anytime and do anything, this is it y'all. Thank you guys for your service. We only have what we because of you, and those like you. Greatest generation and for some, the greatest time.
