Super interesting episode my boi, ive been clean for 8 yrs from a 12 yr addiction, im currently a 2nd year psych student,when you spoke on genes and environment got me wondering your specific take on that as an addiction neuroscientist. As a psych student with prolonged personal experience with addiction, and other life experiences that time bestows upon us, some of the literature i am taught doesn't quite equate to what's actually happening, specifically the addiction literature( in psych) as ,i feel, the researchers( usually students) may not understand specifically what the data indicates, rather an interpretation based off literature that was ,again, based of data that wasn't quite well understood, hence the specific take from an addiction neuroscientist ( the empirical "data" I obtained over my years as an addict around other addicts who regularly spoke about what was going on, truthfully, no skewing based on incentives or outcomes,no intervention based on funding etc, seems like a gap in understanding knowledge or data researchers obtain.

For opioids like heroin or oxycodone addiction turns into half part still obviously loving the highs but the other half is really only focused on the avoiding withdrawals. That was my experience.

I get it. You are a research scientist. You are studying active use which can lead to abuse. I am not an expert in that. But I am an expert in my own personal experience and I know that I went through a time in my life where I had my mom die, became physically disabled etc and was able to use benzo meds, pain meds as needed and was able to physically get myself walking again with the help of professionals who gave me great advice. I realize that you are trying to prevent a messy outcome. But I think it is fair to explain that not every person has SUD. Many people can decide that the helpful effects of a drug are short term and can regulate themselves accordingly. But, in America, somehow we just disregard the patients experience and rely only on the "medical professionals" who are making money of prescription over use. I'm sorry, but if I use your own protocol of equating extremist use with proper use, you are not providing trustworthy data. I am not saying you are wrong about this information, what I am saying is that many, almost all, doctors are provided a long-term plan towards personal wealth via big pharma that provides a " you need this for the rest of your life" scenario that doesn't actually define the cases where that is true and the cases where capitalist providers make maximum profit at the expense of the patient.
@droppedoutbeatz

So is the opioid epidemic response with GABAPENTIN overuse going to backfire in the way I think it is???
@davidestabrook5367
@davidestabrook5367 20 күн бұрын
Yes, it's already happened in Ireland, gabapentin and pregabalin became drugs of abuse, in people vulnerable to addiction. People have died from those two. And now pain management is only providing those, and not prescribing opioids, based on the false belief that everyone who uses opioids gets addicted. That's the wrong approach because gabapentin and pregabalin don't provide good pain relief. And people vulnerable to addiction have just as much difficulty controlling their pregabalin use as their opioid use.
