I had a 'gifted' oak tree seedling from the squiggle ... I have potted it up and let it thrive, it's about 4 years old now... It will be going on my grave.... I'm hoping by then it will be a proper tree..😄 Vivi is also in 'bequeathing' mode it would seem...

This has been a difficult year for growing, i am so lucky my friend works on organic farm, they have poly tunnels, i get my veg from them , my allotment is for fresh air and exercise. Green beans always work, other than that, toms a disaster, greens not happy, for me, it's an expensive hobby, i'm not giving up xxx

Debbie - it's best to net any brassicas, and you can also try garlic spray. 👍 Also, if you have some spare dosh, you can buy a solution from a brand called Grazers that is a natural deterrent - I have found as long as there is not too much rain (😬) an application a fortnight works. 🤞

Hey Paul, I was just perusing the book "Bugs, Slugs, & Other Thugs," by Rhonda Massingham Hart and she recommends a barrier of powdered ginger or crushed limestone to keep slugs and snails out.

Same here in North East Aberdeen, spring was awful & summer was really late, my dwarf jackpot runner beans are now prolific & picking every 2 days. I planted 30 straight into the soil, they have red apricot & white flowers, so pretty to see on my allotment. If you require any seeds I’d be more than happy to send you some ❤️

Here in SE Georgia, USA, I had a good early summer crop of Cucumbers and tomatillos. Tomatoes were pretty much a bust this year, too many bugs and diseases. Okra and my volunteer sweet potato are doing well but the massive rain from Tropical Storm Debby killed most of my garden. At least I still have my peppers, they love the ridiculous heat and inconsistent watering. 😂

Same here Paul in southern Scotland. No two days the same apart from mostly wet, windy and cold. No courgettes, hardly any runner beans or french beans. Tomatoes only just flowering, so obviously they won't ripen. Chard very slow. Potatoes good. Weeds prolific! I'm picking a small harvest but will honestly be glad when I can start again next year. Let's hope it's a better growing season. I look on in envy when I see some You Tubers saying how hot it is on their plots.

I just looked up the crinkle crankle room as it sounded fascinating and there are a lot of google hits about viewers being wow-ed by it, so you are not alone. Being in New Zealand we don't get a lot of the programmes that you do so I was very happy to see that the episode is on KZfaq and I am able to watch this one.

My veg garden has been as disastrous this year here in Bristol. Too much rain, too cold, not enough sun, too many slugs. About the only thing to survive are 3 x4 pint plastic milk bottles cut to half size and planted with 3 types of Basil. 2 of which are struggling and the 3rd is weedy and turning yellow. Normally they would have been bushy and able to be harvested every other day but I've been lucky to get a few tops pinched off this year 😥😥

Thank you for your answer, Paul. It's sad, I think I would like to get myself a beer to commiserate all of our gardens this year. Critters have enjoyed my garden. Your slugs are huge. I'm getting courgettes (summer squash) slowly, but nothing near what I should be harvesting for the 12 plants I have. Maybe 2 or 3 squash every few days. Mosquitoes are vicious in my garden this year, too, so even taking the hod around to look for harvest... I'm paying for it in blood. But am I still enjoying my garden -- definitely a yes! And there is always next year....❤

Sorry for your gardening woes. Here in suburbs of Connecticut chipmunks ate most of our blueberries and strawberries. Squirrels ate all peaches on our one tree. Bears stroll through and have eaten butternut squash. Raccoons, possum and skunk help themselves as well. We pick tomatoes as soon as they start to color. We have an electric fence around chicken pen to deter bobcat and bears. We have also had a very wet summer. Gardening is rewarding and challenging and I enjoy your channel.

Heartbreaafter all your hard work. It makes me wonder what commercial growers use to keep the slimy sods away. Even with the insecticides they use I’m sure the weather has impacted them significantly. Bit of a worry.

@sunnyday8927

Thanks for the video and sorry to know your significant reduction of the produce this year. To reduce the slug damage I used nematode once in May. It protected my young seedlings/plants by reducing slug population. It costs £14 for 40 square meters, which covered my eight raised beds. Therefore I have similar amount of produce in comparison to last year.
@paulsavident
@paulsavident 11 сағат бұрын
Yes, I have used nematodes in the past and had very mixed results - when the rain levels and temperature have been just right they have worked, other years they haven't. 👍🤞👍

can't you use salt to control slugs? you are so lucky to have land to grow different things, I wish I had your space and energy, bad growing season, stay safe, and God Bless
@paulsavident
@paulsavident 12 сағат бұрын
Oh, definitely not... salt will kill worms and many other essential creatures that live in the soil, it will also change the rate of growth of plants and could 'burn' plant roots. 😬 Just like the suggestions sometimes of using vinegar to kill weeds, salt is not soemthing we should be using in the garden. 👍

I'm going to say something so positive, you two are so funny and you always make me smile. Re- putting together chairs, I have just bought a lawn mower that you had to put it together. So I started ,it all went well until I had to put the the plastic grass box together. That was a nightmare. I went on utube to see if anyone else had the same problem. This man had exactly the same issue and he was nearly tearing his hair out, although he was bald. It was so funny. I eventually put it together breaking my nails at the same time. I have to say it is a great little mower although it was hard work initially. Good luck with the chairs Richard. 😄

Richard, just do you. If someone is permanently "Pollyanna" or permanently the "King of Complaints" they are mentally unbalanced. So you take those two days of Sunshine Richard and just beam... healthy people are a mixed bag. This morning I'm making Tomato Cheese Vegetarian tarts from garden tomatoes I just picked. Happy to finally be getting a few tomatoes here. I forgot I had Green Tomatoes and kept wondering why they weren't turning red yet... and then I realized I had Aunt Ruby's German Green and they were ready. As to your biological vs environmental question, I've always thought the answer was it's both and probably somewhere in the mix, neither. ❤ Have a good week guys.

As a window cleaner outside all the time, I wear sun cream all year round. Factor 30 in winter/spring, and f 50 in summer months. I was only prescribed transitional glasses in my 50's but by then a little damage has been done. People should have transitional glasses or even sun glasses from a younger age if outside most of the time. My Macular is slightly impaired.
