Case A) If you close the system isolation valve, you keep the rest of the system safe from any unwanted incidents. This might be advantageous for high-churn fire pumps (more than 175 psi) and systems where you are not confident to have been fully compliant with appropriate installation standards. Case B) If you keep the system isolation valve open, it ensures that your whole system is capable of handling your fire pump operation, which btw is the intent of NFPA in the first place. This is advantageous for properly installed systems, compliant to NFPA 13, 14, 20 and other standards, whether or not the fire pump has a high or low head.
