I was never taught how to budget and my family had major shopping addiction, I actually love being frugal/careful.. I don't like buying clothes etc unless I absolutely need to..frugal is good

This subject is far far deeper. These corporate companies first create the need before they sell you the solution. Trust me they will go to any length to get you to want and buy. Mind manipulation, depression and unhappiness because your not what you think you should be. If it means the consumer buys more than they need, step over their grandmother lose their morals to get this things, then so be it. This is politics and we need to have fairer elections by having population funding of political party champains. Instead of private companies giving cash for questions.

Car = just undone all frugality. By far ( apart from gambling), the very worst way to waste money . * car depreciation is huge , then tax, energy, maintenance) . Ridiculous. Buying a house in the UK ? Crazily stupid. That’s a waste.

I’m sorry but this is a really boring way to live. I save money by only feeding my kids every other day. This keeps them nice and slim and my wife and I can have a Caribbean holiday every Christmas with the money we’ve saved (while the children stay with their grandparents).

Great content, thank you. I like videos around consuming less because it gives me a feeling of solidarity, and sometimes I learn new information or skills. But I don’t like the name underconsumption because there are times when I don’t manage to take what I need, in many areas of life, for various reasons. That has negative consequences.
@ThisEditedLife

That's a really good point you make - it's important that we DO take what we need. I guess there's a risk of us feeling guilty if we become overly fixated on consuming less.

I'm really enjoying your video's,and it is good to see little cookie,she was so sweet. I've been decluttering for 2 years, believe me it's been so hard,I am almost 60 and was such a hoarder. Now,finally I am clearing out all my ' just in case ' stuff, shoes,clothes, books, cd's.. etc etc I am feeling very liberated,it really is doing my mental health the world of good.xx

Great method - always best not to be too rash when it comes to deciding on decluttering items. When I first embraced minimalism, I went in with the “all or nothing” mindset which I really regretted. Decluttering so many clothes without taking the time to think it through properly - I was left with hardly anything, then had to go out and buy stuff to replace some of the items I got rid of. I now review my wardrobe each season and keep aside items for a couple of weeks until I’m 100% sure I no longer need them. 👍🏼

I think this is where my minimalism clashes with my frugality. On one hand I want less stuff, but on the other I don't want to get rid of resources. I am lucky my wardrobe is small already , I wear items until they literally fall apart and then go and get new item in charity shop. Ps: I'm intrigued why you have your tshirts inside out ?
@ThisEditedLife
@ThisEditedLife 5 күн бұрын
Yes, I've worn clothes until they're falling apart and yet I still have trouble throwing them because I grow so attached! In terms of the t-shirts, it's because they'd been washed inside out and I'd hung them up that way and not bothered to turn them back the right way 🙂

I keep a basket of just in case items and go through them when I change my clothes for the season, most of the clothes I end up decluttering
@ThisEditedLife

That's a great idea in terms of changing clothes for the season. I've tried to be mindful that some clothes I keep because I WILL use them again when the weather changes. That way I don't declutter and end up needing to re-buy items.

I dont get the problem!! If people have it then let's let them spend it !! with their spending they will increase the economy and employment.... those who don't have it let them save it and be happy with living a minimalist lifestyle... to each their own.... we're all free to be what we want to be and sometimes people can change overtime...

It'll be another social media trend for likes and follows. Next month, it'll be something else. I think there is a difference between being frugal and being 'poor'. I often get accused on my channel of behaving poor or like a pauper because I like to live a more frugal lifestyle and choose to be more mindful with the money I have. I choose to buy less because I don't need stuff, but some people have a critical opinion of that. If you are running a channel because you are genuinely struggling it should be full of tips on how to make a tiny budget go further especially with food and if you have kids. I think a lot has become lost in the translation.

My degree is in Advertising and I've spent my entire 25-year career selling things to people. Today I work in the garbage-man business (seriously it's waste disposal). I've sold consumer goods, business goods, products, and services, experiences too. Honestly most people who buy things simply forget they have them and forget to use them - even important things like insurance policies go unused. When people have an accident, they forget they have the insurance and either don't file a claim or they file it and it's too hard to get a payment. It's crazy. I KNOW marketers literally spend all day trying to find people who will buy certain products, and many of those products really aren't needed at all. We have products and we look for a market for them. That's why we try to insert our products into a certain kind of lifestyle. it's part of that lifestyle and you simply have to have product Z because that's the lifestyle. Who cares if you're using it. We don't even care if you buy it and throw it away. You really can live a very fulfilling life without most products. We're really trying super hard to sell you the idea that you can't have the lifestyle you want without the product we have. But there are very nearly always low-price substitutes, or you can go without. I'm very interested in what will happen now that states like Illinois are passing laws about Extended Producer Responsibility. If everybody just throws a product away without using it fully, or even at all, or even the packaging it comes in, that will cost the manufacturer, not the consumer. I think this type of legislation is poised to make a big impact. We need it. Too many things are landfilled. We need to stop rewarding businesses that make useless products. We need to stop encouraging talented labor to flow into industries that essentially provide no lasting value to consumers. We don't have a labor shortage - we have a shortage of companies producing things that are really a value to consumers because we've been essentially giving away free money (loans) for my whole career. We have a horrible mismatch in value-creation today. Something needs to change to fix that. People literally buy food that kills them and takes years off their lives. We have to start fixing that. I was not surprised to learn life expectancy has been going down since my grandma was a young mother in the 1950s.

I agree in a way that I think frugality and a minimalism to certain extend is a protest movement against hyper consumerism and advertiser culture. At the same time I am a bit perplexed at the notion that the movement can be making light of others reality. I don't get it, I think people taking part in hashtags about frugality are very aware of the less privileged and actually shine a light on it.
@ThisEditedLife
@ThisEditedLife 9 күн бұрын
That's my view too but perhaps, for some, it seems maybe patronising because being frugal isn't deemed as anything to "brag" about? Even though these trends can trigger disagreements, I think the disagreements help to generate conversations and shine a light, so in my view that's still positive 😊

Over the past year, I have gone through my wardrobe and with the help of a dressmaker, I have restyled many of my existing clothes. I have found this a much nicer experience than just going out and buying new clothes. One of the items I had was a long waterfall coat, and I just didn't like the style anymore. My dress maker cut off the bottom to make the coat knee length, used the cut off material to make a hood for the coat and added buttons at the front. Completely changed the style and I love it.
