Better take a look at what historical buildings are left while they still stand, with the push for Condos, these buildings will all be but a photo soon...

I spend many hours in this cemetary eating a sandwhich, reading the headstones, and reading about them in the various books they are in. That brick wall has always been a sad issue, especially considering the man who built it is buried in that cemetary, hed be rolling in his grave seeing the condition of it.
@alanharrington874
@alanharrington874 29 күн бұрын
The brick wall is well built... It is the tree roots pushing up underneath that are knocking down a portion. Plus the grade has changed - causing ground water to flow in a different direction from when the bricks were laid 179 years ago. Yes - Fixing the brick wall is on the list of improvements being done later on in the project.

The cemetery was owned by the Davis family not the Fisher family. It now comes under the city. They took over management of the cemetery a few years ago, but there’s not much budget from the city, although they are contributing to this project by the Burlington historical Society for more information or if you wish to be a volunteer for this project contact the Burlington historical Societyon their website

It was my understanding that until the city took over ownership/maintenance, it was still owned by the Fisher family, and if you could prove you were a direct descendant of one of the original UEL families that started that burial ground, (I believe the Ghents were one of the other UEL families) there was still a limited amount of burial space still there and you could be buried there. Am I mistaken and possibly been told a tall tale by a local?

I used to work the TPO trains through Stockport, the first of the night was the Manchester London, known as the Panic, 40 men, 20 barrows of mail, 3 minutes to load, god help any passengers that got in the way!!! also the driver, he had a critical job to stop on the marks, all the barrows were lined up on the edge of the platform in order of loading, if he was long or short it required everything to be moved, he got a mighty slagging for that

I have to admit as a 21 yr old at the time of the demolition I thought there was concrete plans for a tall apartment structure that was going to be partly built over the lake. Year after year the land sat empty, and it seemed a real shame it came down so soon.

Very nostalgic moment for me to see this film I made more than 50 years ago. David Sovereign the voice had been a classmate at Maplehurst School😂My wife Caro;l Anne sang the solo behind the church scene and John Reynolds’s did a wonderful job writing the script. I shot it with a 16 mm Bolex and edited in my home studio. The water turbines were a passion and today our family business is manufacturing them for the world market inn Ontario and :Poland.

My family’s although born in Hamilton and Freelton have history in Burlington back to the twenties I know of. My fathers sisters all six of them were quite a bit older than him and would rent a cottage on the beach strip in the summertime. They would head to work from there into Hamilton and spend the summer away from school enjoying the beach and socializing at the brant inn, a place they would enjoy until it closed. After the war two along with there husbands built lovely homes on the lakeshore right beside John Collasa’s home just west of The pig and whistle. My father built a small home further west beside what is now Bella court, the oldest condos on the stretch. By the time I came along (65) we lived on Stratton rd. Straight behind and across the street from the lakeshore house. What a wonderful city I grew up in! Elisabeth Gardens school where my sister went I went and so many friends many I still have contact with now! I actually have the big swing set from there at my home outside of Parry Sound. Skyway Plaza that was quite new and bustling. With the passing of my mother in 2019 and the sale of Stratton rd my visits south are fewer. My God mother though still lives on Stratton rd, an original owner that moved in a shiny new home in 58 right behind my parents and then right across the street when they moved to Stratton! My sister lives in headon forest and my children in Hamilton and Ancaster. Many friends have never left and a few cousins but the city is not as nice as it was in my opinion. Downtown has been ruined by the high rises along the lakeshore and shouldn’t have been done. The pressures of progress and time marches on etc. Thanks for the upload! I remember the centennial and all the festivities that year.

The current lift bridge was built in 1960 I believe. It is a single span across the entire harbour entrance, about 300 feet long. Absolutely massive construction as it originally also carried a railroad track.

i lived in Hamilton for most of my life except for 13 years through the 80s and 90s when i was out in Calgary Alberta, now I'm in Dartmouth NS ,its sad to see all the old buildings and houses gone ,they could have done a better job of restoring them instead of tearing everything down. Reason i say this because NS has made a point of saving some history its amazing to see all the old villages and town and how much history they have saved ,its too bad Hamilton and Burlington couldnt have done the same ....thanks for the memories bud

I look at Central now and what it looked like in the past. We had more pride in our gardens and land in the past. Things were made to look beautiful. Pride was taken in it. Now, the gardens are no more. Just like Spencer Smith Park, was stunning, now, not so much.

Thanks for watching my video. The cemetary you mentioned is the cemetary at Plains Road and Francis. I do not have any old pictures of the cemetary but here is some information on it for you Union Burying Ground (Brick or Loyalist Cemetery)In 1806, the Davis and Ghent families moved to Burlington onto land they had purchased from Joseph Brant. A plot of land at the front of the Davis farm was sold to ten families in the area to use as burial plots.Established in 1848, this cemetery with its unique brick wall is recognized and protected through heritage designation.Two veterans from the War of 1812 are interred at this cemetery, Private Asahel Davis and Thomas Ghent. The red brick wall with its stone foundation was built in 1888.

Before the Skyway bridge was begun, my father built a Supertest service station and restaurant on the south end of the bridge just past and across the road from the amusement park. He sold the business when he heard about the new bridge! Many years later I was passing by and stopped in to visit the current owner of Skyway Lawn Equipment.We had a wonderful chat about the place and he showed me around. I was only about 4 years old when my Dad sold the business but I remembered quite a bit! I was also a junior member of the Burlington Yacht Club in 1958.

i love these photos and movies! My Mom (nee Mary Almas) was born on a farm on Graham's Lane, 100 years ago come Sept 1st. Her birth certificate of course said 'Freeman.' My Uncle Freeman Barber stayed with the Freeman family while he was also working on the RR, based at Freeman Station to get his conductor training and certificate. ('Scuse the pun). A lovely memorial of him is now present at the Freeman Station heritage site. Dad's families lived in one of those little houses on the south side (opposite the clans and a bit west. His Aunt and Uncle Jim and Mary Potter lived next door and adjacent was the Freeman Mission which became Freeman Gospel Tabernacle on Brant St., and then Brant Street Bible Church - and now (joined with Park Church to become Compass Point Bible Church). I was raised on Maple Avenue -opposite the bottom of what's now Maple Mall 74+ years ago. Great memories!

Good Day Laurie, thank you for your very nice comments about my videos. Very interesting story about your family and the connections. What is even more co-incidental was that I grew up with the Thorpes of Maple Avenue and later in my early career lived at 765 Maple Ave, across from Tregunno’s. I think your house might have been next door or close by. I see too from Don Thorpe that you know him as well. He and I are on Heritage Burlington committees and the Aldershot Community Honour Roll steering committee. Small world Eh! One other thing. Would you be willing to share any old photos from the Almas or Barber Family of early Burlington. I would love to digitally scan any you might have and give you a digital copy. @@burlingtonhistoryminutes1330 Thanks for this message! I will indeed see what I can find that may be of interest. We lied at 759 Maple Ave - part of the old Stephenson farm that my great-grandfather James Almas purchased in the early 1900s. He owned from Graham's Lane in (From Brant Street) from the RR tracks out to Maple Avenue. Every child (and there were several) received land or an allottment when they married. Don Thorpe and I often walked to school together. Mom went to school with his Dad at the top of Maple Ave. - one room SS# (I forget) with other Thorpes, Lindleys, Almas and others.
