Yesterday I decided to go for a lesson in parachuting at a well known school in Orange Ma. they've been doing it for over 30 years. I grew up being scared of heights yet it is something that always intrigued me. So, next month I'll be driving up there and doing a jump, tandem jump. Yes it still scares me some but I'm not getting younger. So I'll be on the edge on that day, I'm retired and it seems now is the time. My daughter is grown and off on her own, now's the time.

I feel sympathy for our country, low income people are now suffering to survive yet inflation and recession keep increasing daily, many families can't even enhance the good cost of living anymore. You've helped me a lot Sir Brian! Imagine I invested $50,000 and received $190,500 after 14 days

You shouldn't wait until retirement to start this process. We created our estate plans with all of these documents almost 30 years ago, and regularly review these documents and make updates. I've known too many people who didn’t do this early and didn’t have them in place when they were needed.

I know you are in Canada but here in the US, the priority is a Revocable Living Trust as opposed to a Will that controls distribution (it is good to have a pour over will with the trust). Here in US, all Wills go through probate which can be an expensive and time-consuming process. Some states have a shortened process for estates under a certain dollar amount. Other than that, great advice.

My large hospital outsourced our jobs (2200 of us) this last March. I was going to take a step down and decided to wait it out and see what happens. If I get laid off, I will see what happens but I am not working for these big companies who don’t care about their employees. 27years is enough. Subscribed! This sounds really interesting.

This was my reality after we were bought out. The higher up the ladder, the more I dreaded working there. I stayed because of the seniority. When I was finally on the list to be let go, it was actually a relief to no longer have to run in the corporate rate race.

Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same number of years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through a wealth manager, and my dad through the 401k.

This is true. I'm in my mid 60's now. My wife and I were following this same trajectory. Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

Its unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $287k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

Of course Canadians have national health insurance. Most US citizens pay $175/month for medicare but also have to pay for a medical supplement policy - mine costs $325 (on top of the $175 medicare premium).

@tcmazz
@tcmazz Ай бұрын
All these numbers seem way too low, a person works almost 50 yrs and they have a net worth of $350K that's like $7K per year over the 50 yrs! That indicates to me that folks are living paycheck to paycheck for the most part. If that's your net worth take away the home and what does that leave you for retirement? Absolutely nothing SQUAT!

My retirement was just last month. Having pre-tax income of $5.7 million, I did follow my one-time advice from *Leah* *Alderman* *Foster* Since I have an inherited $700k that I have to spend down in seven years, I had to do it all at once. I'm currently 59 years old. I have $3.5 million in Roth since I have a pension. Stocks worth $4.5 million are taxed. I'm starting to give my kids gifts now, as you stated, to help with a house down the road. I am no longer suffering with rmd. Children receive it free of tax. The only thing my wife has is $600,000 before taxes, which I may need to convert at some point. I'm attempting to avoid paying for Medicare, but it appears like I will have to for a time. I am unable to even deplete my pension each month. excluding the remainder of my investments.

Even if it seems like you are in a position of freedom and have been strategic in your retirement planning with your adviser, I still look for her. When RMD time arrives, it's good not to have a partner (IRS) hanging over you. We hope the best for you!

Does the net worth include a house ?
@767bob
@767bob Ай бұрын
Yes, anything that you own. If you own a house that is worth $500,000 but still have a mortgage of $200,000, then it is worth $300,000. If the mortgage is completely paid off then it is worth $500,000. Plus add your savings and investments. Same goes with cars, jewelry, furniture and so on....

When talking about income, is that gross income? Net income? Or taxable income?
@RogerZoul
@RogerZoul Ай бұрын
I hate it when people drop words/phrases like “a little bit” when that term doesn’t even apply. there is a huge difference between 1.2m and 200k for net worth. If you are 65 with a net worth of 200k you are probably going to have a very hard time in retirement, though maybe in some places and under some conditions you may be ok. Certainly someone with 1.2m net worth, though not rich, can likely make it depending on where you live, expenses, etc.
@Travlinmo

These median and averages don’t help much if the person next to you has a pension/guaranteed income and you need to live on the invested assets. Unless you calculate NPV for both (not the subject of the video) then you learn very little. All the financial folks love to share this data since available but it doesn’t tend to be valuable.
