Less is more?……Does anyone play real music?……depend on backing tracks?…….a lot of words.

Gotta go with the round on this demo. I think both are great choices if they fit the sound you are going for. Same as what amp is right, what pedals are right, pick or fingers. They are all good.

Had Thomastik on my fretless some years ago. Surprising velvet-like refined sound. More high's. Lighter to play. But less 'thump'

My question is I’ve been playing awhile but don’t claim to be the smartest when it comes to tone control at church I’m running thru a mxr compressor pedal and into a sand amp bass DI and direct in I play a 5 string SOZO with active eq in the bass I’m having problems getting a muddy tone am I running to much compression since the sandals has compression in it looking for insight to clean it up thanks

I have the same guitar, 1984 I think. It has tex mex pickups, cts pots, wiring is the same as fender custom shop. The thing plays crazy. It’s so versatile and blindfolded you never k ow it was a budget guitar. I paid £65 for it at a pawn shop last year!!

That's a beautiful bass you have. Is that Lake Placid Blue? Love the color and the black pickguard goes great with it.

I've always used nickel plated. I switched from D"Darrio to Elixir a few years ago and have stayed with them since. However, I had to buy new strings yesterday, ordered from Strings by Mail, and almost bought stainless instead of the nickel plated. I thought they may sound a bit fuller, but stuck with what I know. The only con from the Elixir strings are that even new they don't quite have that "new string" vibrancy we bassists love. They're more like a couple days after new sounding, and they live forever. So smooth they remind me of flats. I think a set of stainless Elixir may be worthy of a look. New video? Buddy? Great content, and your bassings are great!

Thanks for the review, well done. Aria Pro II basses are incredible. I bought my first new in 1981. It's a TSB-400 which is medium scale. My son who is an incredible lead guitarist said I was spoiled from the get go with my bass since it has great fret access, finishing and is perfectly balanced. Fast forward 40+ years to now when I needed to purchase another bass for recording because one of the resin filled pickups on my original bass no longer works. I tried to find a replacement to pick up and even had one custom made but it just didn't sound as good as the original so I thought I will purchase another base to use in the meantime since I had recording to do. Medium scale bases are not that common but that's what I'm used to and that's what I like best so the hunt was on. I ended up purchasing an Aria Pro II Jet bass which is also a medium scale instrument but with a jazz bass pickup configuration. It has great fret access and the finishing of the bases pretty good overall but it is slightly neck heavy, albeit not as bad as any of the short scale bases I checked out since I could not find other medium scale bases. I've had the chance to play live with it through some pretty incredible PA systems and am quite happy with the sound. It even has a nice sound when slapping it. I love the hollow body base you just reviewed and if it was available in a 32-in medium scale, I would buy one in a heartbeat, especially in that beautiful red color. Here is a link to a track i recorded with my TSB-400 using only the neck pickup. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fauDpN1_1crbpqc.htmlsi=h7B9SZiTf64ZvVnn

I have several American Fenders and a Squiere like this one and for me it's better than the Fenders. it has a special gain for single coil and a beautiful clean sound... those who don't know this guitar may think we exaggerate what we say, but it's one of the best guitars I've ever played

fwiw - don't like the body shapes but am impressed by your demos of the pickups. Are those pickups close enough iin size to a Stiingray pickup to install Stingray clone pups with minimal routing work? Do the stock pups do a good job of cancelling hum fields?

Flats have more 'thump' attack. Not very notable at first hearing, but significant for the overall perception. Flats with a bridge pickup and a proper setup can generate a lot harmonics as well. You do not need rounds for that. To my opinion flats generate more 'fretless' sound than the rounds. Also a pickup mix of 1:3 to 1:4 neck:bridge is overlooked. That mix gives the brighter bridge pu sound, with more bottom, and most of all it cancels out the lost harmonics that every pu looses due to its position, so all harmonics become present in roughly the same amount. Finally, it depends of the style of music and of your playing. For the (real) bass role flats seem most appropriate. For soloing and more funky playing the rounds will do.

Bully: Many thanks for giving us honest reviews of low cost equipment. When your budget is a major consideration, knowing you're getting the best bang for your buck is critical. You give us honest, realistic expectations about the equipment you review. That, and you likeable personality makes your videos a real resource for the player who is just starting out, and the older players like me who have learned the concept of value. God bless, my friend. That's offered from the heart with utmost sincerity.

Killer playing man, I'm also the owner of a Squier affinity (4str P/J). I'm at the stage where i'm considering getting myself another bass, after changing pickups (for second hand japan fender PU), but my rationale is not so clear : do i want it for another design, for another neck profile, another kind of sound ? Who knows ? Modding my bass could just be cheaper and fun to do too, but oh well, uncertainty :p

1/2 way through the vid, and my next strings will be these Rotos for my Geddy Lee signature jazz. I had that set-up several years ago on a different Geddy bass. Was, to this day, the very best pick sound that I have ever heard from my own playing. Thank you for the reminder..

Super bright tones, but be forewarned super low gain… To get them to even push my overdrive pedals I have to run them through boost on full tilt and crank all the way up on the overdrive. That makes it a pain for whenever I switch to one of my other guitars.
