I had a 1979 Cherokee Cheif, wide track, 360, TH400, QuadraTrac. when working at the truck shop years ago. During lunch break, another mechanic, ( The guy I got the jeep from ) and I, made a quick drive to the store, across town.. As I was driving along, through mid day, town traffic, the jeep started going faster, coming up to a just changed to red traffic light. I could barely hold it back, with the brakes, which I was Damn near standing on the pedal. Tim, my passenger, looking confused, and slightly scared. I was holding the brakes and trying to pull the CABLE OPERATED go pedal back unsuccessfully. The engine seemed like it was fighting back, the more I tried to pull the throttle back, the engine racing faster and faster, the whole rig was inching forward, into the intersection, at the red light, Tom's eyes opening wider, hands on the dash, cross traffic still had green light. I shut engine off, put transmission in park. We both got out, and looked under the hood. I found the throttle cable had several strands of the stiff steel cable frayed, where it slides through the cable housing, which were keeping the throttle nearly wide open. closed the hood, jumped in and started the engine, pulling shifter into gear, and left in a cloud of exhaust and tire smoke. Only had two traffic lights which I decided looked close enough to green, and shut the engine off as we made it off the main road and rolled into parking spot. Went in, used shop phone and had new throttle control cable delivered😎☕ That was the first time I had ever had one of those cables shred & rats nest, like that. my eyes always check, every time I see a cable operated throttle 🎯👀🎯

But the real test became how to handle a stuck throttle on the trail and laugh all the way to the crash and burn.

Driving with windows down is absolutely necessary so as not to asphyxiate yourselves. I'm wondering how much of the undercarriage will end up in the rear hatch before it's over. If you're not ripping out the fender liners, you're not doing it right.
