Why is your Kiln outdoors? It can not be good for the Kiln
@TonyLockhart16 күн бұрын
@@DunoonVanRijn-dx1hr it was the only option available at the time. Oddly enough, we’re almost done with construction on a new studio and my kiln will finally, after ten years of making pottery, be indoors. 🎉🤩

I wonder if that technique could be used to save a slumping pot - wrap burlap around it as a sort of bandage until it hardens up.
@DunoonVanRijn-dx1hr23 күн бұрын
Great colours achieved. I think this is the clay to use for a Beginner and it is low firing, which I like very much

Nifty enough trick. Not worth it to me trying to keep burlap strings etc out of everything

Nice texture, you could also alter it by pushing outward from the inner wall.

did it shrink much?
@TonyLockhart2 ай бұрын
Yep, probably the same 10-14% that I've seen from all of the other cone 5 clay varieties. I did get some odd warping even though all of the zones in my kiln fire evenly....probably some kind of an error on my part when drying them out. Do you have experience with BMix? If so, have you noticed a reasonable amount of shrink?

How thick did you apply the castile blue to prevent it from running?
@TonyLockhart2 ай бұрын
That's tough to answer because you have to do a lot of trail and error to figure it out. I will say that I lightly spray 2 layers and all goes well. I also find that Castille Blue runs a lot more on darker clays, so that's something to take into consideration. When spraying, the specific gravity of my glaze is between 55 and 60 baumes....looks kinda thick like cream. Hope that helps!

Absolutely beautiful!! Looove the sound of the rain!! I used BMix for several years and then they started having the problems with it not vitrifying and I haven’t touched it since then. I have friends that had entire kiln loads not vitrify and there is just no way I want to deal with that. Good luck. Also may I ask what tape you use? I bought some tape and it doesn’t bend around to make a curve at all.

That's pretty wild. Any idea if the formulation changed? Wondering if Laguna figured it out.

Tough question, mainly because I only have time to make pottery about 10 days a month. The other day, I threw 15 ramen bowls because I had an hour of free time. After kids go to bed tonight, I'll have to trim them. Thanks for following along!

Thanks for the kind words, Audrey! ....I used to dislike glazing until I moved to spraying. It's nice to get consistent results, especially when you can layer glazes as opposed dipping large vessels. Merry Christmas to you too!

When you dunk in your bucket the inside gets fully glazed too?
@TonyLockhart10 ай бұрын
Sometimes....you've got to try and rotate the tongs for that to happen. You could also slowly submerge it from the side. The big idea is to avoid trapping and air pocket as the vessel gets dipped in the glaze. Hope that helps!

@TonyLockhart Жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the comment! Glad to hear that you're selling pots. Are you a production potter? Yep, I bought some Nitride bonded Silicone Carbide shelves from Laguna Clay. They're about half of the price of the Adancer shelves and weigh the same. I might kilnwash them because I've noticed that they discolor larger pots. Hoping that'll fix the issue.

Where can I find the template you used?
@TonyLockhart Жыл бұрын
I'd recommend making your own. For instance, I'd drag a rectangular selection on a new layer and fill it with gray paint, then I'd cut out boxes on the left and right side. I'd end by merging those layers and duplicating. You can send me an email and I'll be happy to make one for you. Cheers!

Anybody have an idea about this?...What is the gizmo called where you have TWO squares, cut into mats, and you slide them over each other to determine what height x width of a subject, that you want to focus on...? I can't come up with a name for that technique!! Arrgh...LOL!
@TonyLockhart Жыл бұрын
Sorry, just saw this comment. I did a quick search for "adjustable view finder" and noticed a couple of options. Didn't find anything with two squares, however found to sliding L-shapes. Might be great to choose your own aspect ratio when developing a composition. Here's a blog link that popped up on a search: www.jacksonsart.com/blog/2014/05/23/new-derwent-drawing-tools-and-cases/

Do you need to be already retired to have time to learn all about the process? The learning of the mere basics to set up a panel seems overkill.
@TonyLockhart2 жыл бұрын
Great question, Mike! I think anyone can learn provided that allocate the time needed master a skill. Everyone starts somewhere, whether is be something simple as panel setup versus developing shorthand to quickly illustrate high/low contrast with diffused light settings. Thanks for the comment/question!

How are you liking the new speckled BMix? I’ve heard a lot of people are having issues with it. I have to say that your spray “booth” is such an amazing idea!!
@TonyLockhart2 жыл бұрын
No complaints thus far. It throws like a dream, reclaims easily, and takes to colorant well. I don't fire about cone5, and I tend to fire at a slow/medium speed. I've heard a number of other potters complain about blistering, but I haven't had an issue yet. I've got about 300 pounds of it so I'll blow through it this summer. Fingers crossed!

@@TonyLockhart That’s great to hear. Hoping they get it figured out. I bought 250 pounds of B clay from continental clay and I’ve used it for several years now but the new stuff I got was not at all plastic and cracked when you bent it. It’s called being short and that was the 3rd time it happened. I sent it back and had to try something new from a different company. I had made over 150 test tiles with that clay and now have to start over. I’m a bit peaved to say the least. Hope it all works well for you

Wow. Your kiln doesn’t get wet when it rains? I can’t imagine leaving my kiln out like this. Thank you so much for your knowledgeable video!!
@TonyLockhart2 жыл бұрын
Great question! It's actually sheltered very nicely because I built a structure with 4x4 posts of pressure treated wood. The footprint is a lot wider than the kiln and the roof is sloped. It's worked really well during the last 2 years, although exterior parts of the kiln have rusted significantly.

Thanks for the video Tony. Enjoyed learning a bit about the process. What is the purpose of the plugs you put into the side of the kiln?
@TonyLockhart2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tommy, good to hear from you! The plugs help to vent out gas in the kiln. They also let you take peek into the kilns so you can determine if the wares inside have reached the appropriate temp. Thanks for watching!
