Hi AFV, and thanks! Yes, looking at other peoples' videos of last Thursday (22 Aug) as I wasn't there myself, the "playlists" were very similar if not actually identical (maybe they swapped the order round slightly this time). Maybe slightly different instruments/players this time as well. Whatever, I thought it sounded excellent. I didn't see many people filming it this time. Great weather, without the sun in the eyes.

Another goody from you here Mike! You’re quite right about the band looking and sounding superb, and your video captures the sound of the tubas brilliantly! Out of interest how much does a tuba weigh? I think you’d have to be of a certain stature in order to be able to play one whilst on the march! Thanks, as ever, for doing the honours Mike👍
@MikeM14-40
@MikeM14-40 9 күн бұрын
Thanks very much, Ann! Approximate weights of "professional" models of the largest brass instruments ("student" models could be a bit lighter) are:- Euphonium: 10lb 8oz (4.7kg); E-flat tuba: 20lb 8oz (9.3kg); B-flat tuba: 26lb (11.8kg). Of course it's not just the sheer weight but how far away the size moves the centre of the weight away from the player's body if that makes sense. You're absolutely right about the stature, both in terms of carrying it and in terms of putting enough air through it. My main instrument was euphonium, and I could play E-flat tuba tolerably (while seated) but I really struggled trying to play B-flat tuba even when seated.

@MikeM14-40 crikey! I had no idea they were that heavy! Almost 2 stone! Respect has just gone up another level!😏 They do look cumbersome but that's a price to pay for the quality sound I suppose. What a smashing video! You’ve caught the great sounds wonderfully and also a nice spot of the “Mick Swagger” that seems accentuated when the plumes of both the Drum Major and of the Band are St Patrick’s Blue. And yep, the Welsh Guards are on form too and deserve recognition for their part. This is the third video I’ve seen of this occasion, each has its own merits being shot from different angles and vantage points but your narrative Mike is a stand alone🥰 Thank you for once again Mike for braving the journeys and crowds in order for us to see and gain insight as to the occasion👍

Hello Ann, it's good to hear from you again, and many thanks for the comments! I know you understand very well the "contortions" I have to go through, transport-wise, for every visit to Windsor. It's good to see the SDM still appearing, in his inimitable style, in these guard-changes. I fully agree that it's good to see more than one person's video of each of these events, to give context and because there can be so much to take in. The current "run" of good weather here in the south-east has continued, allowing another good one today (Saturday).

Hello Avril, it's good to hear from you, and thank you for the comments. I'm not sure whether or not you're the lady I have seen very regularly on my visits to see the guard-changes at Windsor, and with whom I, along with one of the younger "filmers", exchanged a few brief words on Thursday after the end of the guard-change, in the High Street near the front of the station before I had to rush off to catch my train home. I've had an interest in military bands and marches from the time I was a small child in the 1960s, but am a relative newcomer to coming to Windsor to see the bands and guard-changes.

Hello Salsahbee. If you open up my Description, just below the video itself, you'll see that I always try and list the names of the marches, and the composer, there. The start of the march that starts at around 2:29 does sound (in my view) rather like "Sarafand", but it's actually "Guards Armoured Division", also by your grandad - from memory it was played on Horse Guards Parade during Trooping the Colour this year. Another of your grandad's marches, again from memory, was played as the massed band marched towards Horse Guards Parade for Trooping the Colour, called "Rhythm of the Line". Hello Delvin, and thanks for coming back. I will note that march for my future reference. From the very limited few bars I heard of that march yesterday, right near the end, I thought - wrongly - that it sounded a bit like "Farewell of Slavianka" which the Grenadier Guards band have been known to play - "Cyno" has a very good video of it dating from 2018! However, of course it's a very different thing, and is another excellent march by H.L.Blankenburg. I may have heard it, via someone else's video, played in Windsor in the last few months but I have given up looking for it! There are also a couple of good complete "studio" recordings of it on KZfaq.

Mike, thanks for another great video. Here in coastal Maine, USA which borders New Brunswick, Canada our little towns have an annual International Festival. Sadly this year our parade may be rained out due to the tail end of hurricane Debbie. Not that our little high school marching bands are on par with the Welsh Guards, but the kids really try hard. The people of Windsor are really fortunate to have these parades regularly. And those of who don't, appreciate your efforts to bring them to us. Thanks Again.

@MikeM14-40
@MikeM14-40 18 күн бұрын
Hello Charlotte, and thanks. I'm not exactly sure what the building is, but I think it's a block of offices with maybe a factory or two amongst them. At the front there are one or two front doors, with a flat forecourt which is raised above street level, probably to keep it safe from being flooded, and the ramps are for wheelchair users and maybe also bicycles to get up and down. If some of the units are workshops, the ramps could also be for wheeling heavy items in and out using trolleys or barrows. It looks as if in the past some local council services were housed there as well, in which case it would be important for local residents to be able to access the offices easily. Of course, some of the walls are stood on by people filming the guard-change parades so they can get a better view!

Good morning, Mike. Cool to hear the plane going over and see to a glimpse of its shadow. Question-when bands and guards are marching and serving at Windsor castle, how long are they in Windsor?
@MikeM14-40
@MikeM14-40 25 күн бұрын
Hi Charlotte, and glad you enjoyed it. I'm not an expert on what you've asked in your question, so all I can do is tell you what I see and believe. In Windsor there are normally 3 guard-changes each week. They don't always have a full military band, and some of them might not have any music at all. A schedule of each of the dates, who's supplying the Guards, and which band is providing the music, is published one month at a time, so at the moment we can see the schedule for August, but not for anything beyond that. I believe the bands don't stay in Windsor at all. They are brought to Windsor in the morning on the day by coach (I've sometimes seen the coaches arriving), and taken away by coach as soon as the guard-change is finished. I believe that the foot-guard bands are based near Buckingham Palace in London, which is about 25 miles from Windsor. Last Saturday (I wasn't there) no band turned up, and I later read that the reason for this was that the scheduled band couldn't get to Windsor in time because of very heavy traffic on its route caused by accidents and other disruptions. The traffic in this part of the country can be horrendous because everything is so crowded. The August schedule shows 1st Battalion Welsh Guards providing the guards for the whole of August, so it looks as if they can be in Windsor for as long as a month and maybe even longer. They would be based in the barracks, with a "detachment" of them (if that's the right word) going up to be the Castle Guard. The Guard Change is the occasion when that detachment is replaced by another detachment, of "fresh" Guards. I hope that this helps, and that if anyone who knows more about these aspects reads this they'll correct me if I've got any of it wrong.

Good morning, Mike. Great video as always. I told Delvin that, “The Champion,” march sounds like a ‘gearing up for a fight’ march. I like it. Saw a couple of favorite people and a couple of, “tall drinks of water,” foot guards 😋

Hi Charlotte, and thanks. Yes, I saw your message to Delvin about "The Champion" - I can't remember whose video it was on, but I do scan other peoples' videos and the comments when I get time. I always like the marches the Scots Guard band play - they have a very good repertoire in my view, and several of their marches are by various of their former Directors of Music such as Duncan Beat and Jimmy Howe. I'm very glad I've got some of your favourites (spectators and others) in this time!

Yes, I love some of The Scot’s Guards marches as well. Especially ‘Royal Stuart’ (when the cymbals come in the second time through/repeat)! The hairs on the back of my neck stand up! 😆 Also Pentland Hills. And also The Glaswegian. Lovely, stirring marches. Thanks so much for the recording as well. It’s much appreciated by all.

@@custard24 Hi custard24, and thanks! I like "Pentland Hills" very much as well, and I haven't heard it nearly enough times. Another of my favourites from them is "Edinburgh Castle".

Good morning Mike, from rainy, gloomy, coastal Maine , USA. Thanks so much for your post. It's a great way to enjoy my morning coffee. I really enjoyed their selection of marches today. It's nice to hear some marches I had not heard before. I especially enjoyed the march they were playing as they entered the castle grounds.

Hello again Brian, and thanks for your comment. I agree that the selection of marches was very good to listen to. I haven't seen the Band of the Welsh Guards as often as some of the other bands, so I really didn't know what would be in store. It was the first time I got the march you mention, "The Contemptibles", in any of my videos. I think it is more usually associated with the Band of the Irish Guards (hopefully an expert will correct me if I'm wrong!), and that is a band that, through circumstances, I've seen/filmed even less often.

@@MikeM14-40 you are very fortunate over in Great Britain to have so many great Regimental Bands, and residing in a town where they Parade every day. Our US Army band, Pershing's Own and the US Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, are rarely seen on parade here. And even rarer do we get to see tge Fife and Drum Corps of the ceremonial Old Guard. They dress in late 1700s period uniform, tricorn hats, gaiters and powdered whigs, which by tradition is the reverse color of the Contininental Army under George Washington. A question if you don't mind. Does the Band of The Royal Marines, Parade and do the Marines also stand Guard Duty? I think they have very sharp dress uniforms, and watching their drummers, who remind me of antique toy soldiers.

@@briannicholas2757 Hi Brian, yes, we are very lucky to have so many great military bands (Army, Marines, and Royal Air Force), but the number has sadly reduced drastically over the past few years, and there are further reductions even as I write. In Windsor there are normally 3 guard-changes with parades a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. At Buckingham Palace in London, there are normally guard-changes on the alternate days - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. However, at Buckingham Palace it is a lot more difficult to get really close to the band to see and hear them properly. I only live about 20 miles from Windsor, which used to be a 45-minute drive, but late last year I had to stop driving because my eyesight wasn't good enough to meet the standard required for driving. Now I have to get there by train, which takes about 2 hours, plus a 30-minute walk to the station. The journey involves 4 different trains, and if any one of them is late or cancelled it can mean I don't get there in time to see the guard-change parade in full. Furthermore, if it rains, the parade, or at least the band providing musical support, can be cancelled at a moment's notice. This means I have to be very selective in what journeys I set out on! I've seen "The President's Own" in many concert videos on KZfaq - I think these videos are very good, and a great reference source for various pieces of music, including various marches. The Band of the Royal Marines does play in many parades, even occasionally in Windsor. I don't know whether or not the Marines stand Guard Duty - hopefully someone else reading this can give an answer. There are actually several different Royal Marines bands - I believe the total number is about 4 or 5 but again maybe someone else can provide a definitive answer. The Royal Marines bands are almost universally thought to be among the best. With their different layout of instruments, with percussion forming the front row, the euphoniums on the outside, etc, they have a somewhat different sound from, say, the Guards bands.

Hi Charlotte, and thanks. Yes, although I didn't have time to look around very much while I was there (due to delays and cancellations on the train journey getting there meaning I was 40 minutes later arriving than I'd planned), I saw at least some of your "favourites", and several "filmers" as well.

Ridiculous and in my mind somewhat demeaning having that police officer out front. He is not the leader of the band. If he has to walk along with them he should be at one side. Any trouble ? Those boys can take care of themselves.
