I love this… looks very user friendly and organized! I just lost a 330 cause a bear grabbed it.. now I was cheap on the wire length so I was kind of asking for it but this method here looks great!

Most folks go overbroad with the nails, just enough to maintain the oval pattern. Too many nails cost you a lot of time.

Hi! Loved the video it was informative and easy to follow. Do you tan it after it’s done drying and if so what is your process? And if not, why? How does it stay preserved? Sorry for all the questions Im new to harvesting fur and have a fisher id like to dry using your board method but im concerned about how soft it will be after drying.

I ship them to sell after I dry them. If I hold them for any amount I store the raw dried pelt in my freezer. The pelt will turn yellow and the bugs will get into it if not in a freezer.

So interesting that you leave flesh on mink a no-no in northern Alberta lots of fat under the saddle In my section. Good to see price is finally starting to rise
@gibbsadventures12
@gibbsadventures12 5 ай бұрын
different sections of mink are handled a little different a western type mink has a heavey saddle with a lot of fat that needs to be scraped a northern type has very fine leather and little fat so better to leave the saddle on. Central type mink same deal you have to take the saddle off.

Here in SE Yukon, nearly all juvenile female marten will make the large size when put on male board- a prime example of Bergmans Law. Biggest marten occur at higher elevation-3,000-3500'. Why, I have yet to determine.

Good video Jim the worst thing I see in marten trappers is ground sets and handling the trapped animal from trap location to skinning shed. Mouse chews 80 % discount to select. If I can’t catch a marten hanging from a pole and then wrapped up in a fur bag and moving blanket on its way to the fur shed better to let it live and breed

Good explanation Jim. I always tell my students. You are spending money until you catch the animal. Now how you handle it can either make you money or lose you money. It’s all in presentation and primeness of the pelt.

Jim, I'm in Michigan, do you put yours in sawdust before you flesh all you hides out,, or just to dry them and then freeze with the sawdust.? Fill me in please , great video and presentation 👍👍👍👍
@gibbsadventures12
@gibbsadventures12 6 ай бұрын
I use the regular sawdust when fleshing the beaver, I make sure to get it all of the hide before stretching them. If they are wet I will use an old dryer that I have modified into a drum to clean and dry the fur. using hardwood sawdust.

One tip for anyone drumming fur, for really greasy animals like coon, beaver or bear capes , we always added mineral spirits to our sawdust . It's like night and day how well it cleans that dirt grease crap out of the fur and leaves it soft silky and clean. Obviously before fleshing.

Thanks for the demo Jim. I used to frost scrape after learning from a trapper from Hearst. I agree, the leather side is much better looking but I thought FHA has requested that beavers not be frost scraped anymore? That is why I have not done it in years. One thing I did, was a simple A frame and would sit the beaver board about belt height on the cross piece to not have to bend down. My legs could work in between the A frame legs. Worked really well. I just rest the board against the wall. The scrapings are awesome for marten bait. I would put them in plastic milk bags. Kept the bait nice an clean. At the set, I just slice the bag open and squeeze into the box. Gloves don't touch the bait. All your other tips, are 100% on the money, especially not going sideways!! You only do that once or twice. :) Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. Always learn something from them.

Very educational! Couple of questions: 1). How heavy a Swivel do you use? 2) You don’t leave the triggers cocked? Set them after snare is set up? Roughly how many wolves do you catch per season? 3) use same weight of wire for coyotes? B Deacon Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦

I like the design and functionality Jim. Wanting to switch out my plastic boxes which do work well. Curious, do the squirrels not eat the bait? I wonder about a screen in the back and using another screen with compression fit to protect bait?

Nice skinning job. When I was a teenager (1970s) my brother and I met an old trapper with a bum leg and he smoked a pipe. We would stop by his place to watch him skin out the beaver, coons, skunks and fox fox ect. He told us to keep an eye out for road kill and pick it up and bring it to him to process. Some were quite ripe but if the pelt was good enough he would get to work. I found the process very interesting.
