If you want to improve any shoe lace knot, before you do the loops part wrap the one end around the wrapped ends a second time. That makes the base of the knit the same as a surgeon's knot and resists the knot from loosening as you complete it. I call the combination the Swedish surgeon's knot.

The version I use is, before you make your second loop, wrap it twice around the first loop, then make your second loop and pass it thru. I think pretty much makes the same knot, I named it the the security or double wrap shoe knot....my sister in law showed me this 25 yrs. ago when my nieces and nephews came around...it works great, I've been tying my shoes and sneakers this way ever since. Sometimes, with the stingy amount of laces some manufacturers provide, I just end up doing the double wrap and not both with the second loop, just pull the end thru and have a single looper....no one has noticed yet...lol. This was fun to discover this video, i now have a whole community that I didn't know I belonged to. 👍

Welcome to the modern age . I stopped buying tie shoes 30 years ago.

... Except that the girl at the end _for sure tied it wrong_ ... that's a "granny knot" because the first step was tied with the wrong string on top. You can tell these when you see the bunny ears facing people's toes and ankles ... instead of perpendicular to the shoe.

i'll bet it didn't originate in Sweden . these sayings take on a life of their own. for example the 'top down fire lighting method , which is nonsense is called the 'Swedish method' . the Swiss Method ' . the vermont and Maine method and on and on . 😆

In Brighton the advice is to put your foot on something high and not to bend down too tie your shoe laces 😱

I'm from Sweden and I've discovered this knot by myself and never knew it was called the Swedish knot. The simple fact that a knot holds better when you increase friction made me want to try an extra turn/wrap with the loop. This can also be made if you like different tension on different part of the shoe or mostly boots, except you only do several wraps without the loops. I've explained this knot here on youtube on a Swedish outdoor channel. But explaining a knot in only text is difficult. I've even tried to explain it to all my friends but they never manage to do it. I guess I'm a bad teacher. :) On further inspection and googeling it's called a Berluti knot. Sounds more Italian than Swedish....

I'm not sure how different the end result is (not very), but simply double-wrapping before pulling the second loop through is easier than this and just as effective. Don't know if it has a name but it is very popular with climbers.

Laces used to be made of cotton and stayed tied much longer than the polyester crap laces made today. As a teacher of young kids I frequently have to tie shoes and I just double knot the loops. They hold very well, at least till 2pm. After that I don’t care, lol. Attn parents of preschool-1 st kids: Please buy Velcro or slip on shoes for your kids. Shoe tying can takes up a lot of unnecessary time.

I'm Swedish, I don't think I ever saw this not. I myself, I just tighten the strings, wrap the strings once, pull tight, make two identical loops, and tie them together. Then tighten again, just pulling the loops and not the ends. (I had to put on a shoe and tie it before I could describe it 😅)

much easier to double the standard knot. two passes over one lace to start, make a loop (a bight) with either lace and wind the other lace twice around the loop and shove the working end through the hole and pull tight. never comes lose,.easy to untie and only takes an extra 2 seconds. any knot can be doubled in this way... especially useful for slippery synthetic rope
