Would you get this over a 72 inch brush cutter? That’s where I’m at now? Thanks for the info
@topcatmulchers3802
@topcatmulchers3802 2 ай бұрын
I would, only if the area that needs clearing has a lot of larger 3"+ trees and brush. A brush cutter my not be durable enough to take down large trees. I have taken down 6" trees, top to bottom, down to the soil. That would be my thoughts on why a mulcher .vs. a brush cutter. Hope that helps.

Will it run on standard flow?
@topcatmulchers3802
@topcatmulchers3802 2 ай бұрын
Yes, but... I tested mine on standard flow, which on my skid steer puts out around 23gpm +/-. At that gpm the max RPM of the drum was around 990. The specs state it operates at 2200+/-. While I was able to mulch light brush/saplings, anything about 3" or more shut it down. Had to take it really slow. If you have any significant mulching to do it would be painfully slow. The mulched product at the low RPM is also very chunky and long shreds. Some brush not fully mulched. hope this helps.

Mine came with chipped / broken teeth. Biggest issue IMHO is the gap between the teeth - makes it a complete PITA to use on anything bigger than brush. A proper mulcher staggers so you don't have a 2-3 inch gaps where you cut.

Yes, that gab took me some time to get used to. I have done some 6" trees, but you have to take it down small sections at a time, come down on it, go up, shift over and repeat. Works, but means you will spend a lot more time re-processing. as a DIY attachment it gets the job done, but I would not want to be trying to make a living with it.

Unless I'm missing something, the outflow pressure of any hydraulic device should be very low. Essentially just dumping oil back into the tank. I wonder if there is a restriction somewhere in the system, perhaps even in the radiator that is causing over pressure. Does the device shutoff on the skidsteer stop the return of oil?
@topcatmulchers3802
@topcatmulchers3802 3 ай бұрын
That is how I understand it, but thinking this is an issue I brought on myself. I realized that on occasion I was "reversing" the flow to clear out stuck debris (force the drum to turn backwards) and to decrease the pressure in the lines just before disconnecting to help with reconnecting latter. Thought was that I am then pushing nearly full pressure direct to the radiator. I am wondering if there is supposed to be a valve that prevents the reverse flow of the fluid.

Rob, yes, the belts are the number one part that I get inquires about. AGT once had a link on their site to order, but that link is gone. You have to make sure the idler pully is greased AND check to make sure the tensioning arm has not come loose causing the belt to track off. I have see the bolt come loose and cause the belt to ride up on the edges and wear the belt down. This appears to be a common timing belt. www.amazon.com/PowerDrive-1680-14M-40-Timing-Belt-Rubber/dp/B00ISCB5UG 66.41" circomfrance = 1680m 1.57" wide = 40m .39 = tooth depth = 10m .55" = 14M = pitch (teeth on center) Also, recommended = HTD1680-14M user said it was made by FENKE

Dean, yep. That was the point of my first video. The Top Cat comes BONE DRY. not a drop of oil or grease anywhere. combine that with the somewhat useless user manual and you are asking for issues. Fortunately, I at least spent the time trying to find a manual and succeeded finding that appears to be the closest one out there (see video #1), and it had all the details of the spots needing to be serviced. I did that before ever turning it on. Might be the first smart thing I did with the Top Cat. Have you tried contacting agrotkindustrial.com/ for parts?

If you can’t afford to buy a quality builtAmerican or Canadian built mulched you certainly can’t afford a cheap Chinese unit, even if you’re successful in beefing up the teeth, it’ll fail at the next weakest link.

My experience has been that failures move from one part to the next. Though, the failure rate has tapered off. I am still of the opinion that when priced in the $8k or less, this mulcher has a fit. You just have to be prepared to suffer through the failures and spend the time finding solutions. Which is why I started this channel. I did not do my home work (not enough anyway) before I bought and just hoping to save others the grief, of at least let them go into with eyes open. I think in one of my videos I talk about buying a top quality name brand .vs. the top cat. When I put the math to it, and consider what I have spent. Then, look at what used FAI, Fecon, Dennis Cmaf, etc sell for when they are 4 years old/used. It seems to me one approach is buy name brand, use it for 4 years, then sell it. Example if you buy a unit for $40k, keep up the maintenance, in 4 years it may resell for $20k. That $20k you spent, will be pretty close to what it will cost you to keep the Top Cat going for 4 years. At least that is my estimate

I am surprised to hear that about the TMG unit, though I have zero experience with it. I did notice that AgroTk has dropped the web site price for the unit from $12,500.00 to $7,900.00. That could mean they are dropping the product and thus parts availability will be come even more scarce

Yes, that is a valid point and something that should be considered. I am guessing (and only guessing as I have not put the research into it), that I have about $18k of mulcher, teeth, repair parts, etc. And, up to this point I have done around $12k of work/mulching. So got a ways to go. On the other hand, by doing it myself I am able to more selectively do the areas I want, in the way I want them. some of the work I have done would be a little hard to describe to a contractor. Still, this is good advise before someone opts in to spend the money to buy.

Thought I could break even on selling mine but they impacted my sell price imho. I also sold the Greatbear Tree Shear there. Went for double what I paid but there's an auction Fee that eats up some of the profit. Went for $900. I did not like that it had an electronic plugin on it. Just something to break or malfuntion and then it's scrap metal! A New Topcat SSFM81 Mulcher sold there for $2300.... So I ran a FAE mulcher for over 500 hours and I’m pretty certain it had no coolers at all. The machine operating the equipment should have a cooler capable of keeping the fluid temps controlled. Landon, that is a great point and something I have not yet pointed out. I have been running without the radiator. It is easy to bypass the radiator with the existing hoses. I have just been keeping and eye on the skid steer hydraulic temp gauge and so far temps look normal. HOWEVER, I have been running shorter work cycles and stop about every 20 minutes +/- to give system time to cool. Very good advice, hopefully others will see this and consider as an option .vs. sitting with a dead mulcher.

Shawn, well just like me you own one now.... ;). Yes, teeth are now available from AgroTK. here is the link. I have been pretty hard on my opinions of the TopCat, but you know, it gets the job done, and if you take your time, do not push it too hard it will perform well with just a few issues. If this is a DIY thing, that is your not planning on earning a living with it, you should find it does what you need. Here is the link for the teeth. Takes about 3 weeks to get them from china. agrotkindustrial.com/products/forestry-mulcher-teeth

There's a new 76" China Drum Mulchers out. Never seen this one before and I can't find info online about it being low or high flow. The Auction sites don't post an info sheet for this one. ➡ 2023 Diggit TH76 76 Inch Forestry Drum Mulcher ⬅. I like the positioning of the cutters on it but the drum looks like it may be to light weight and also looks to light weight where the cutters bolt to. Monitoring a bunch in an auction today Sept 13. Located hours away from me.

Keto, that is an interesting design. Teeth look like they might be a fairly standard "beaver" tooth. Also, looks like it limits the depth of cut which actually can help in performance. First time I have seen that one. I may start following that one on the auctions, see what the going price will be.

Can you change the teeth out for hammer blades? You could probably find some with a width that would close your gap. I know I've seen them on other mulches that have a similar bolt-on pattern to yours. You'd just have to make sure they clear the inner wall of the mulcher. You might even be able to find someone local who could fabricate them for you. By the way, we have one of these right down the road from me brand new (AGL Branded 81") for $5500!

Wade, I don't know. Have not seen any they might fit, but yes you could have them fabricated. Also, looking at a way to just get new carbide tips brazed on when they chip or come off. That so far is just a thought and have not looked into it more.

I will preface this by saying that I am not a hydraulics engineer - however - some thoughts. I would assume that the radiator is in the return to the hydraulic tank because then it doesn't have to deal with the very high pressures being fed to the motor - and would explain why it looks like it will only handle 600PSI The return pressure is going to be affected by the flow rate, so length of return hose, diameter of hose, and the resistance of the radiator itself. if there is any blockage or restriction in the hose, or radiator, then that will increase the pressure, possibly leading to failure. . I can see a couple of solutions - add a second radiator, and a second return hose (or increase the size of the return hose) from the radiator all the way back to the hydraulic tank, which would halve the return pressure and reduce the stress on the radiators. (as well as improving the cooling). You could also add a bypass valve as well to protect both radiators but if the bypass valve is being used then there will be reduced cooling. Looking at the video you could probably fit a couple of radiators back to back without too much engineering of brackets etc. Of course if the radiators are just poorly constructed and only last 2-3 years (possibly clogging up inside and or corroding) then you may have to resign yourself to treating then as a service item and just replacing them. Another solution would be to dump the radiator and add a separate low pressure high flow pump and radiator circuit connected to the oil reservoir that takes the oil out of the hydraulic tank and cools it. The downside is that it probably involves a bunch of engineering that you may not want to do. The up side is that it would cool for anything. As I said though - it all involves work and experimentation - personally I would be intrigued to measure what the return pressure is and get a rating for the radiator from the manufacturer.

@topcatmulchers3802 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for the details. I had not thought of adding a second radiator, as you are correct, there is plenty of room in there to do so. The radiator is on the return to hydraulic tank side. It sits down stream (exit side) as the fluid leaves the hydraulic motor. So based on that, it should not need to handle the full 3000psi. I did realize something though. The early failure could be my fault. One issue with the unit is when when reconnecting the hydraulic couplers after unit has been sitting, it is impossible to do so without breaking the seal on one of the lines and letting the fluid bleed out, thus relieving pressure. Takeuchi has a procedure for helping prevent this that you can run BEFORE you disconnect the line. The process involves pressing button that reverses the flow of the fluid, then there is a switch that lets you dump into the reservoir. Releasing the pressure in the lines. It occurred to me, that when I do that, the radiator is now on the FRONT side of the hydraulic motor, that is fluid now flows through radiator on its way to the motor .vs. on the outflow side of the motor. I am wondering if this creates a higher than expected pressure in the radiator. I agree with you, it would be good to know what the pressure is on the Outflow/radiator side. I am looking for details on how to add permanent a pressure gauge on at the radiator side.

Run your skid steer at full throttle, run the mulcher as close as you can to the ground just keep the head out of the ground. There is a learning curve to running a mulcher.

@topcatmulchers3802 11 ай бұрын
Duane, THAT is great advice. I did come to understand I was running my skid steer throttle just under half and when I started running at 3/4 the mulching results improved. So that is great advice. I probably should crank it up some more. Wish someone had suggested that to me earlier. Hopefully other newbie's will see your post and learn from that. So, yes it is a learning curve.

I have ran fecon heads for 10 years and there in NO gap, there is know way that could do production work. Get with the manufacturer and get wider teeth or a different drum that is unacceptable

Jerome, yes, I agree, there is no way this head would work for commercial/production work. It would take soo long. I did manage to retrofit some FAE teach which reduced the gap AND improved the mulching quality. So for personal DIY, it is getting the job done... slowly...

I'm weary of the Disk Mulcher now because of the balance issues others have had. SSFM81 TopCat Drum Mulcher went for $3800(plus buyer fee) Wednesday July 26. Unfortunately for me it would be 24 hours solid driving time round trip to the auction site if I had bought one. Likely have to wait to bid on Drum Mulcher in October at local auction but might not even be any in the auction. I think the seller of them kept the drum Mulchers out of the last auction locally because of them not selling high enough previously. Only one used Name Brand Drum Mulcher for sale near me that's $15,000 and has approx 60 cutters costing $100 each. Nothing aftermarket will fit in it. The way they bolt in is purposely designed to be difficult to make by aftermarket suppliers.

Keto, I have watch the prices at the auction drop as well. Going from an average to $14k sell price, to $3,800.00 is a big drop. The RB Auction in Houston sold all 4 at auction for around $4,500.00 ea. I hate to see Agrotx (TopCat) loose the business/revenue. Not sure, but somehow I think getting the info (KZfaq) about the TopCat has more savy shoppers re-thinking or at least getting the purchasing in line with the value of the product. I think an $8k price tag for the TopCat SSFM-81 drum mulcher is reasonable. It has issues, it is not perfect, but it will get the job done for the DIY user.

I think I like the Disk Mulcher better than the Drum Mulcher. Came close to bidding on a Brand New TOP CAT SSDFM60 80 in Disc Skid Steer Mulcher Today. One went for $ 2300 and one for $ 2500. I had watched a video on the Rut Manufacturing Skid Steer Forestry Disc Mulcher Annihilator(Listed for $ 16,148 online). The man that uploaded the video returned his Top Cat Disc Mulcher to a retailer because of a Very Major Balance issue. I never thought about a possible balance issue with a Disk Mulcher. I'm debating whether I'll buy a TOP CAT SSDFM60 80 in Disc in a few months at the next auction if it goes around the same price at that time. I am thinking that they might be sending their defective ones to the auction! 🤔The retailer the man bought his Top Cat Disk Mulcher from may have bought their inventory from an auction.

Keto, I have always wanted to try the disc mulcher, but not able to justify cost to own two mulchers.. :) I have seen the KZfaq video of the TopCat Disc Mulcher that had balance issues AND I have had a Disc Mulcher owner contact me about balance issues. I am assuming not all TopCat disc mulchers have that issue. There are companies that specialize in balancing disc mulchers but i have no idea how much that might cost. If yoiu end up getting one, please let me know how it works out. Thank for sharing your thoughts on this, hopefully it can help others.

@@topcatmulchers3802 I watched a video this morning by the manufacturer of Skid Steer Disc Mulcher 'THE RAGE' doing a Demo on Dirtmonkey Channel. Got a chunk of wood severely jammed in it. Kind of turned me off! I read a comment by someone that had his Top Cat Disk Mulcher balanced & he said "$ 4000 later its still not completely balanced as the disk is warped!" 👉Another issue could be snapping the motor shaft. Seem to me it's far more dangerous to operate than a drum mulcher. I doubt the disk on the Top Cat is made of the quality steel that it should be. Watching an online auction that's 12 hrs away from me. Ends Wednesday. Next auction near me is in October.

I have ordered some items from TMG and was pleased with their support/service as well. That is the upside of buying from a re-seller .vs. auction. My last conversation with them also indicated the teeth alignment on the TMG is staggered, so it does not have the "gap" issue that the TopCat has. Other than that issue, has it been working well?
