Hey Joel, your videos on this have been flipping excellent! Thank you for all the detail! I had a problem that required the removal of the rack on my C4S and those VOSS fittings were jammed in my rack also. I ended up cutting both lines at the hard line up stream of the flex sections thinking I could get new sections made up and we could just join them in. Which we can. I also managed to get VOSS to send me some fittings .... turns out they are making them again! However!.... I'm struggling with two things .... fitting the new VOSS fittings onto the hard lines just like you have found tricky, and what to do about that flow restriction valve thing. PS what you might not want to hear is that you can get these lines from Porsche direct now... they have them in stock in the UK. They are £482 inc VAT each still though. My car is not as disassembled as yours though so I am trying to avoid taking it all apart just to replace those lines ... as well as the cost!

Hi, thanks for your email. I know where you are at. To fit the OEM VOSS fittings you need two things. A lip around the end of the pipe, and a crimping tool for the VOSS fitting. Both of which is not easy. I ended up developing a new VOSS style fitting at a machine shop and built a compression fitting into the end of it. Regards Joël

Hi, thanks for your message. I bought a pair of plates but decided not to fit them. It would have meant separating the good hub which ruins the bearing. I’m sure I’ll fit them at some point. For some reason the C2 stone guards do not have a gap in the fixing ring to pass over the hub shaft. Unlike the C4S which does. I feel it’s a bit of a design fault.

Nice work, Joël. If it’s sub zero in the garage, I’m guessing you might be a month or two behind in real time? You must be consulting quite a few of your videos in reverse for the reassembly process. Seems also like you're well organized on labelling and bagging nuts and bolts too. When I diagnosed a failed fuel pump a few months ago, I took the opportunity to pump out almost all the fuel and what few pieces of contamination I could find in the tank before installing a new pump and fuel sender unit but, must say, it seemed like a piece of cake compared to reinstalling the tank itself. Looks like you’re finally reaping rewards after all that extensive work on the power steering lines too. That’s gotta feel satisfying.

Hi, thanks for your message. Mine leaked at the joint in the pipes just behind/forward of the rear RHS wheel. Both pipes have a join there and it’s the lowest part of the system to the ground. So salt had got in the joint and corroded the seat of the o-ring and caused a gap in the seal. Do bear in mind that both pipes fit together and to the car with such accuracy that there is very little play at all in the fittings. So check the compressor first. Have a think about buying the Bentley Manual for the 996 it’s well worth it.

I now eagerly await your updated installments on the 996’s return to “ better than new” status. I’m guessing I was a shade younger than you when I bought my 01 C2 and my then young sons comfortably fit in it. Now they drive it and my plan would be for it to go to one of them one day when their old man is done with it. Meanwhile, since your last video I have installed the Numeric short shifter kit along with their accompanying cables, performed a gearbox oil change and installed new engine mounts. The whole drive experience has been transformed. Subtle but pronounced improvement from the engine mounts which I did first (then test drove). Radical change (and improvement for me) with the Numeric SSK. Nothing vague, gentle or mushy about the shifting experience now: you feel rewarded with short, sharp, precise shifts but you equally need to be that much more purposeful with what you’re doing. Who knew you could have this much fun under the car…ha. I feel like a pretend mechanic as I watch you meticulously and painstakingly rebuild your P-car.
@My911
@My911 2 ай бұрын
Hi Marcus, that’s great news. It’s something everyone should do. I guess a brand new 996 would drive well, but the shifter design is poor and ages badly. A job I didn’t do yet was the gearbox mount. Mine seems fine, but it’s another source of play if it’s perished. How many miles does yours have on the clock? J.
@marcusslade9804
@marcusslade9804 2 ай бұрын
@@My911 Funny you should mention the transmission mount. As far as I can tell without supporting the gearbox and taking apart the surrounding assembly, the transmission mount looks fine. However, if I could readily change it I would, simply because of the age. Mileage-wise, I’m OK as I still only have 79,000 kilometres on the clock (very sparing use the last few years until all the recent service work of the last six weeks). While I can buy a new mount for about $100, to buy the specialty press-fit tool with which to install it is about $700 (can’t swing that for one isolated use of the tool). I’m on the west coast of Canada in Vancouver. With your gearbox out and resourceful access to tools (like the coil press) I would suggest it as a worthwhile element to tackle.

Good man. Any questions just ask. I went through all the options before buying a set. Even contacted Hella for some replacement projectors and researched others that might fit like BMW but nothing worked for me. One thing before you buy… make sure you look at them in your hands and check that every tab is attached and that there is no damp ingress around the seels. Take your car with you and plug them in the test them. I guess they will cost around 3k for a pair now. Good luck. Remember that Turbo lights are different to C2 models but both fit. The turbo lights have a reflective band around the lenses, standard cars have a corrugation on the plastic. I unwittingly bought turbo lights for my C2 but they look cool 🙂

@My911
@My911 2 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your message. And yes, someone else bought this up too on here. So it’s a concern. That said, looking on the Porsche website (or design911) they do not sell the spring clamps anymore, they have replaced all of them with jubilee clips. So I am confused. Surely if OPC spec them, it’s OK to use them, right? Changing them out was a massive job and cost over €200! Regards Joël
@GuyMiddletons
@GuyMiddletons 2 ай бұрын
I would be very, very careful replacing spring clips with jubilee clips on the coolant lines. The spring clips are designed to expand with the hose as it heats up and then contract as it cools, jubilee clips will obviously not expand and thus puts pressure on the hose every time it gets up to temperature. It will age the hoses far more prematurely than the spring clips. I have seen a few car where the hoses have split because jubilee clips have been used.
@My911
@My911 2 ай бұрын
Hi Guy, thanks for the advice. And bugger, I didn’t know or think of that and it makes absolute sense. I guess that is the reason for those style of clips. Although that said, I did notice that OPC replaced some spring clips with jubilee clips when I last replaced a spring clip on the engine. Is there any specific areas you think I should change back to spring clips? Or are you saying everywhere on the coolant lines.
@My911
@My911 2 ай бұрын
Hi Guy, thanks for this. I sent you an answer yesterday evening but seems not to have gone through. I was very concerned about what you said because it makes absolute sense. It cost me over 250€ to replace all of those JC’s so you can imagine, not to mention the work. I still have the old spring clips but some are cracked, others are rusty and some cleaned and plated. Costs for new ones are insane (14€ ea) and I need around 40 pieces. I just checked the Porsche parts site (D911) and all of the spring clips have been replaced with jubilee clips, even the genuine part. Which is strange. Or perhaps if I was cynical even Porsche has cottoned on to this and is happy to sell more hoses? Or is there something I am missing… my sons BMW also has genuine BMW jubilee clips on the coolant hoses. Regards Joël

My current thinking is that it may have been a blockage in the outlet from the LH roof drain in the rear wheel well. Hi, i'm finding when I have finished adjusting a valve to the correct clearance, there is slight 'wiggle' on the rocker when pushing back and forth between the valve and the spring. Which obviously seems that no matter how particular I am with clearance, the required clearance won't be that accurate anyway. It's a series 3 diesel that unfortunately hasn't had the attention these cars need to prolong them, turner engineering have the rocker arm assembly as a direct replacement but I don't know how difficult this is etc? I'd massively appreciate your input or anyone for that matter, cheers

Hi Georgie, thanks for your message. I would recommend watching (and subscribing) to Steamwally. He has done a full refurbishment of a rocker shaft and it is very informative. Please say hi from me. If at the end of your research you feel that yours needs a full refurb, you can ask yourself if you want to DIY or indeed purchase one from Turner Engineering. I opted for the latter in 1996 (yes they have been around a long time) and bought a fully gas-flowed unleaded cylinder head complete with hardened valves and rocker shaft and it’s still going strong almost 30 years later. So they get the thumbs up from me. I hope this helps and by all means keeping touch via Instagram if it’s easier. Joël

@@My911 Many thanks for replying back Joel, it's still early days with mine and I'm debating how much I want to throw at it. There isn't a massive amount of play and I anticipated slight wear when taking the cover off, it looks a fairly simple job to replace the rocker unit but whether I want to spend the £400 or just live with it for now was my reason for asking. I know these machines can be fairly forgiving but they can also soon bite you (and your wallet!)
@My911
@My911 2 ай бұрын
Hi, yes, I understand entirely. It’s easy to spend lots of money and £400 is indeed that. I would definitely adjust the clearances as required (Google the 9er rule for this) and see how it runs. If it’s not clattering or affecting the running, then it will last a while longer. My thought was that if there is wear, it it might mean that the shaft is starved of oil. Especially if you say it hasn’t been well maintained. I would certainly check the oil passages for any blockages (they are very small holes in the shaft itself) and clean them with brake clean. In fact, you can simply remove the rocker cover and run the engine to see if the shaft and tappets are getting enough oil. Just be careful doing this. 👍

Partially restoring a 996 TT atm and nowhere near your level. Luckily the car had been waxoyled in the past so not too bad overall. It all started with replacing part of the feed coolant pipe😂! Very impressed by your perseverance and dedication. Subscribed!

Good morning, and thanks for your message. The TT sounds great. What a lovely car. Are you sharing any of your content, on Instagram etc? Would be great to see some images of the restoration. It’s a big push to get mine done this spring. So I appreciate your support. Regards Joël

Super Video! Magst du mal ein Video machen (oder hast es vielleicht schon) wie du die Bremse entlüftest? Und wo stellst den den Unterstellbock am besten drunter…? Unter die Bodenplatte von der Sprungfeder? VG

@My911 3 ай бұрын
Moin Michael, danke dir.

Think you're supposed to lubricate the aircon O rings with the same oil that is added to the aircon gas. That's what I used when I changed my condensers. It was PAG46 for use with R134a gas. Not sure how important it is... Keep up the good work, really interesting. Going to try doing some if the engine/gearbox dismantling on mine when I get a lift and somewhere to put it.

Hi, thanks for your message. I was wondering if I had done the right thing when putting those AC pipes back together. I saw Mat Armstrong using a purple paste when doing his Ferrari, and he was pretty liberal with it. I am concerned that I might have leaks again when I re-gas it.

@@My911 Isn't the only purpose of lubing those o-rings is to help make sure the o-ring doesn't bind and move out of place while pushing in the fittings? So if you're o-rings are seated correctly now there is nothing to worry about. Correct me if I'm wrong....

Looks really good. You're at my favourite part in a restoration, putting things back together. Adding the big parts makes a BIG difference but it's the smaller unseen parts that take up the time. It's only when you stand back and see how busy it looks that you get a sense of achievement. Again, great work Joel.... Phil. 👍

Hi Joel! You’re doing a great job especially with all the tiny details. Years ago in the late 90’s I went on a Porsche factory tour and watched the assembly of the 996s & Boxsters. Much of what you’re assembling like the radiator brackets were on that tour! It was Really fascinating! Cheers 🍺
