Do you have a dash mat? If it is the dash causing the glare maybe one would work. If it is the hood causing it maybe a piece of fabric held on with magnets would stop the glare.

Well, the woods at Little Pee Dee State Park are definitely suitable for ticks. I can't recall if we saw any when we were there. I would recommend just be tick safe. They're here at Old Stone Fort State Park in Manchester, Tennessee! Not bad, just one here and there. 😬

My husband and I just bought our first motorhome and we are loving it. If I could have it my way, we would sell our house, put our things in storage and go FT! I’m so ready, but he’s afraid to sell the house right now. I’ve been going through our belongings and donating stuff! 😂 I’m having a yard sale and I’m posting stuff on online. Am I wrong for thinking ahead?? 😂 I just keep telling him that we need to purge and besides… it’s turning into extra cash for the road trips. 😊

LOL, no, I don't think you're wrong. I am sentimental and in the past tended to hang onto things. What propelled me forward with all of this purging was having to deal with my mom's belongings and house of 50+ years when she passed away. It was a nightmare and nobody in the family wanted anything, even the cool antique items. Even though she had so much more than we did when we sold our house, I didn't want to have my kids going through that nightmare. So have those yard sales and make that money! Enjoy your motorhome trips. We love our cozy little home and getting rid of all the stuff is so freeing. Happy purging! 😊 - Sharon

Does anyone tent camp anymore? Most campgrounds have become RV only parks
@ruffroadrvlife
@ruffroadrvlife Күн бұрын
We see tent campers in our travels. It is mostly private parks we've visited that are RV only, but we do see areas for tent campers in some of them. City, county, state parks and Corps of Engineers, TVA, and national parks often have tent campers. 👍😊

I don't know the exact distance, but it is right across the road and down the stairs. It's not far. Gary only complained about the stairs, not the distance. LOL 😆 Now that's to get to the River Walk. Then it wanders on, but we didn't walk very far on it. You could probably pull it up on Google maps and double-check the distance, too. 😊

We're staying at the Dry Ridge RV Park in Shelby, NC now, visiting our son, not far from Charlotte. They are only charging us $100/mo. to dry camp there as we have a big solar system so don't need an electrical hook-up anymore. The Tanglewood park sure looks nice, but those trees make too much shade for our solar. Plus, at $40/night it's a little pricy for us. We have 4,400 watts of solar (8 - 550-watt panels) racked 15 inches off the roof of our motorhome, so we carry our own shade with us. We have another 620-watt liftable solar array that makes a nice awning over our bedroom window too, so together with our cloth awning we have all the share we need. It sure looks peaceful and relaxing there though. Kids would love it. Take care! Chip & Cindy

Everyone lives this lifestyle differently, so it's hard to compare expenses between FTers. Five and a half years ago, we retired, sold everything, bought an older motorhome and hit the road. It was the best decision we ever made. We visited 11 states last year, and 9 so far this year, so we don't just live a stationary life. Fuel is a controllable expense though. If we want to save money, we just travel less and burn less. We typically move about every 2 weeks for most of the year and winter over in one or two places. We have a 1999 National Tropical Class A gasser that we drive an averaged about 4,500 miles a year over the last 5 yrs. (and a 30-mpg toad that we drive much more, so average around $4,000/yr. in gas for both at today's prices. Unfortunately, our Chevy Cobalt SS toad only burns premium fuel too, so I smell what you're stepping in. Propane cost us about $650 last year, but we'll be using less than 1/2 as much this year since we installed our 5,000w solar system and high-efficiency heat pump. We now both heat and cool 24/7 with the sun and have switched over to a residential fridge, now that we have power to spare. It will also cut our generator fuel to practically nothing, as now we just exercise it once a month to keep it running. Solar really makes a huge difference for us. Eating out can be expensive everywhere, but our groceries cost is determined more by state we are in. Weve found that some areas of the country are much cheaper to live than others. Our grocery budget is a little more than yours, at just under $900/mo. Our pet expenses for our chihuahua and sun conure bird cost about $900-$1,000/yr. adding up food, vet costs, groomer, etc.. We eat out 2-3 times a week on average, spending almost as much as we spend on groceries, as we're foodies who like to explore the local cuisine and visit local microbreweries wherever we go. We sometimes winter over in south TX. We like to stay in a nice little RV park in Los Indios, TX near Brownsville for only $170/mo. for a FHU site. Gas and food are pretty cheap there too, making it a very inexpensive place to stay. You wouldn't want to stay there in the summer, because it gets hot there, like the desert southwest. We found another place near Falcon Lake where you can stay for free. There's a county park, right next to Falcon Lake State Park that lets you stay as long as you like for free. They have free water hookups, allow free dump station use, and they even have free hot showers. It's a little distance into town from there, but if you're on a tight budget, you can't beat free. Two years ago, we wintered over at the LTVAs around Quartzsite, AZ/Imperial Dam, CA. A 7-month permit, which includes unlimited water and dump is only $180. If you break it down, it's only 86 cents a day if you stay the entire time. We stayed 6 months as the it gets a little warm there on the ends of this season. We boondock most of the time, which keeps our RV site cost down to practically nothing. In fact, we boondocked for 10 months last year. We boondocked for free in AZ last winter, but we're in NC now, visiting family where there's very little boondocking available. However, we're staying in a spacious site in a convenient RV park, without hook-ups, for only $100/mo., including water, dump and trash disposal. That's only $3.33/day. This is saving us $500/mo. off their regular FHU rate. A few years back we boondocked for 2 weeks on each rim of the Grand Canyon for free. On the N. Rim we were able to find a campsite just outside the park within a few feet of the rim, actually overlooking the Grand Canyon! Our America the Beautiful pass is good for free admission to the NP and free use of the CG dump station too. Our campground, RV park, dump fees, laundry, etc. only cost us about $1,400 last year. We are domiciled in Louisiana where our insurance on our 1999 Coach and 2006 Chevy Cobalt toad runs about $1,000/yr. for both. Add another $109/yr. for our Escapee Roadside Assistance plan. Registration is cheap in Louisiana and only costs $80 every 2 years for both MH and toad. We have a cheap $27/mo. cell phone plan, and our mailing service costs $120/yr. + postage. We get our internet access through FMCA. They have 3 plans, but we use the $60/mo. all-you-can-eat AT&T plan. We use ROKU for free TV, and we have Netflix for $15.50/mo. We budget about $1,500 a year for repairs and maintenance, as we do almost everything ourselves, but upgrades cost us more. Nevertheless, we have a nice cash reserve for emergencies, which are inevitable, as well as for planned maintenance, like the $2,200 we spent replacing our 8 coach tires last year, which simply aged out. We had a one-time expense last year of about $6,500 to expand our solar system, plus spent another $1,500 for our super-efficient EG-4 mini split heat pump that only uses about 1/3 the electricity of our front roof mounted A/C and is whisper quiet. It's rated to heat down to 5 degrees F. We've only tested it down to 32 degrees but so far, it's worked great. These large investments will pay for themselves quickly in the money they save us in not only electricity and propane, but RV parks too. We had invested about $3,500 in solar/batteries over the years, but they have already paid for themselves many times over, considering the amount of boondocking we do. Our new expanded solar system allows us to boondock even more, living off grid just like we are plugged into a power pedestal at an RV park. Our huge solar system lets us run both A/Cs, our other electrical appliances and still charge our batteries at the same time. We have enough power to run our mini split heat-pump 24/7 if necessary. It also allows us more flexibility in the places and seasons we can stay. The bottom line is that we live this FT lifestyle traveling and living as we please for 1/3rd of what it used to cost us to live in our old S&B home on a limited retiree budget without feeling deprived or limited in any way.

Thank you so much for sharing your expenses and RV lifestyle. Expenses truly are customizable. Love the way you two have ramped up the solar so you can boondock in comfort. That's impressive. Happy camping and happy travels! :)

This is the second company-specific black mark I've found against Dometic. I was really happy to buy their 310, but the company has problems and, at this point, I really don't want to work with them at all. Seems that Thetford will be the way we go unless they've got their own garbage. smh

I grew up going to St Andrews SP. My paw paw took my mom and her siblings in the 70s onward. The park was partly destroyed/damaged during hurricane Michael mixed with some tornado weather if I'm not mistaken. Before then all of the campsites looked much like big lagoon in Pensacola, lots of dense vegetation old Florida feel to them. They completely revamped the campground after that. There was also a terpentine mill close to where the sawmill is, was disappointed to see it gone the last time we went back. That road you said was blocked off right up from the boat ramp went directly to the campground before then. Thanks for your video tour.

What an awesome place to visit as a kid! Yes, we noticed changes from a vacation we took years ago. We camped in a tent right by the water and we were able to dock our boat right there on the shore. They recently made some updates with the road going in and they brought back the swimming area this summer for the first time in many years. My neck of the woods. Years ago there was horse back riding on the trails. Ive camped there too many times. Lol this was a surprise to see it on YT. Me and friends would take canoe to Swift Creek area at bottom of the hill, where there was a flat shoreline area, put in and paddle through the creeks. I haven't been since 2002. When my son was little. Its a good place to camp. Beware of potential flooding of the camping areas next to Swift Creek. But the beaver are fun to watch.

It is what we refer to as "rustic". The bonus is the Suwannee River is right there for kayakers. It is a beautiful paddle, with geography unlike most other Florida rivers. And, for hikers, you can access the Florida Trail from the park and walk to your heart's content.
