Your videos are lovely. Which one did you prefer? I think i like the third one best..BUT i really like the differences too. I think development of my own style will come from trying these three...then taking what i believe is the best of each. 😊

Thank you so much for the kind comments -I think your idea/approach is the best way to develop your own style (try on different ones and take what feels best/most natural) :) It's hard to pick a favorite but for this set, I like the one where I did the wash first and the ink lines after - though the process didn't feel the "easiest" if that makes sense!

I didn’t see anyone else asking-what are the bits of tape at the top and bottom seam line of each of the square book pages? I’ve never noticed those before.
@SusanChiang15 күн бұрын
Hi! (Late reply) but I this particular book the pages were falling out so I had to tape them with a bit of tape. I believe it was because this batch was made with glued seams rather than stitched but they have since changed the construction of the sketchbook. Good question!

Hahnemuhle 250gsm 100% Cotton Sketchbook, is the best quality I've seen. Their Mould made sheets, are second to none in terms of quality. Hahnemuhle makes the best quality papers in my experience, better even compared to Arches,Waterford etc..

0 seconds ago Hi, Can I ask you how you decide what colours to use when painting in the background on the right hand side of your painting to give the imptression of dense background foliage? Many thanks
@SusanChiang7 күн бұрын
Hi! (Late reply, but here's my answer) I tend to look at the reference photo and draw from what I see. It sounds obvious but I also know that it isn't. In a photo/reality we see a lot more details - sometimes I try to pick the most dominate or overall color - so if it was blurred out, what is the main color? Then I go for that as a starting point. If it's obviously green foliate, but has darker areas then my base is green and I will mix in the browns/dark neutrals from the shadow areas - both in the base mixture of the color, ans as well as dots/speckles/marks. Hope that makes sense!

Hi, Can I ask you how you decide what colours to use when painting in the background in this painting? I have seen people use a similar approach when painting dense background foliage ie in a woodland scene. Many thanks

ECHO "wish you talked us through what you were doing" ...as all my favorite tutorials do! It's so hard to figure out which color you're choosing to put in etc. by just looking. And some of your techniques are hard to hone in on without stopping and starting over and over. I do love what you do and your overall approach to painting, thank you.

Thank you for your feedback! As I’ve continued to film and edit more and more videos over the years I’ve definitely developed a better understanding of what is more helpful from the viewers standpoint! Been thinking about refilming a new version of this slower (and with more painting experience!) stay tuned!

Some people thrive in a messier environment I guess! I just don't/can't :). The bookshelf is old from CB2! Though I think if you google "spine" book case, you might find some similar ones - mine is a metal material, if that helps!

Baohong has very nice 100% sketchbooks. I also like the new Tumuarta 100% cotton. (So far so good. Well, you may need a bit of glue from time to time 😅) Been using their regular 25% WC sketchbooks for a while now; very good books. Speedball sketchbooks if you’re into panoramic scenes. Paint looks nice and bright. A lot of people like Paul Ruben sketchbooks.

Lovely brushwork and a nice format to watch a painting demo once focus was resolved. However, I am always perplexed by how many professional watercolorists use only one water source that is dirty while they paint. I was taught to use two water sources. One to rinse your brush in and the other to always have a clean source of water to paint with.

Terrific video! Thank you so much!! Your work is lovely! I agree with your reasons for working the way you do. My drawing skills are good, but I haven't done watercolors in years, so I'm a bit nervous about starting to use them again. This style is so much less intimidating! Your drawing is just right for this charming painting!
