The risible failure of risk management here sees no containment or proper median to prevent any excursion by cyclists/pedestrians or buses from having very serious consequences. In early 2022 a Northbound bus hit a cyclist with fatal result, and the busway/cycle route were closed for over 2 years to erect some rather inadequate fencing The busway was originally to be managed as a tram system (per ROTS) which was dropped when ROGS excluded busways from ORR oversight Several derailments have occurred when bus drivers have lost locational awareness and hit the 'flares' at excess speed (over 30mph), in most cases leaving the busway and violating the cycleway or oncoming busway A spectacular crash involved a Whippet operated bus which was contained by the crash barrier erected to prevent incursion into the adjacent railway, and deflected the bus instead across the oncoming buses and through the cycle route one morning - fortunately no one was hit or injured Unlike a regulated railway the buses operate line of sight at up to 56mph. On the Dunstable busway in June 2016 a Centrebus rammed into a broken down Grant Palmer vehicle at around 50mph. Fortunately the GP bus driver had evacuated the bus and released the parking brake, so this bus was shunted c.30metres by the impact, but 19 passengers on the Centrebus were taken to hospital, and for the Cambridge system a -way single track section has the remote possibility of 2 bus drivers entering the section with a closing speed of 112mph The other problem is that the busway uses longitudinal concrete beams over soft ground with a result that these beams can move laterally and crack - a problem that IK Brunel had with longitudinal beams used on the original GWR track, which were later replaced by conventional sleepers I've collated various reports and details of busway and tramway issues of the 'not quite a railway' operation Many lessons to apply

I guarentee you 90% of the people in those apartments drive to work or work from home. Unless you live and work on the Alameda island, you absolutely need a car to survive. Try commuting to Hayward or Richmond everyday with only a bike and tell me these bike lanes are the magic that makes it happen.

@@mapgar1479 respectfully no ❤️ High speed rail shouldn’t be reserved for specific routes but instead be open for any route. This means that there is more choice. For example, a company or government may decide to build HSR on a busy route such as from the city centre to the airport if they know there is a high demand and it will be economically and socially viable to do so. It shouldn’t be reserved for specific types of journeys, but I think that companies and governments should be able to choose when and where it is viable to build it (would usually be longer journeys such as across the country or across states etc)

Is it just me or is NYC missing a REAL game plan for improving lower Manhattan when the congestion pricing gets implemented? Maybe part of the problem is that improving the common space isn’t a priority and won’t direct any funds to it, instead directing all the funds to transit? American cities demonstrate time after time that doing inauthentic changes to overcome political weakness results in failure!

Bicycles, ebikes, electric cargo bicycles, robo taxis and escooters are great options for last mile, short distance travel. Reduced transportation costs and fossil fuels free transportation. Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles by providing SAFE, PROTECTED BIKE LANES and trails. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Electric bicycles are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Ride to work, ride to school, ride for health or ride for fun. Children should be able to ride a bicycle to school without having to dodge cars and trucks. Separated and protected bike lanes are required. It will also make the roads safer for automobile drivers. Transportation planners and elected officials need to encourage people to walk, bike and take public transportation. Healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. In the future cities will be redesigned for people not cars. Crazy big parking lots will be transformed with solar canopies generating free energy from the sun.

No way. As an urban planner myself I will use the Vancouver model. We should only focus ob road diets complete streets and highways to boulevards projects not congestion pricing and banning cars from cities. The CNU Charter states that in a contemporary metropolis all new development must atequately acvomodate automobiles and Congestion Pricing does not atequately accomodate automobiles.
