Wolves are always so malaligned. I doubt if they were any left on that island. Humans tend to slaughter them and then wonder why the balance of nature is off. I think humans hate wolves because they see that they are predators just like themselves and it’s like a mirror. Except wolves generally only take what they need while humans are greedy..

Wolves have never been native to Crete. That's why Yannis refers to it as "doggy". But I get your point. The animals in the film are more symbols of a natural threat to Maria that drives the narrative. They were never meant to reinforce any negative stereotypes.
