I think for us all its important to be always learning new things and be curious and creative. I’m in my mid thirties and Im making also a pixel art point and click game on my freetime, mainly to counter balance my engineering job. I feel healthier using both sides of the brain so to speak.

There is a thing i find interesting about people trying to make their own pixek fints, usually it looks like they try to make them for the characters rather than for the viewer "Arent these too big? Literally the size of his chest" you are the one reading, not your little guy so dont worry
@lucky-jacob10 күн бұрын
It's more about canvas size, I guess. The smaller the canvas the smaller the font needs to be.

AI can be a tool for rapid prototyping, to learn the vocabulary of the medium you like, but that's it. For something meaningful you gotta stay human. Good luck on your learning journey! I'm also learning a lot, and I think that my decision to only use AI as google image on steroids is the right one for me. I don't want to crap out stuff that I have zero input in.

I think you do things differently depending on whether you take a business or creative approach. For me, it's difficult to wear both hats. More importantly, there's less room for failure if you're just aiming to do something creative. I think part of me always thinks, "What if I could make some moneyz from that?" but I think it would throw me off track if I followed that line of thinking. Especially with KZfaq and stuff. All hail the algoithm! xD (But, I guess it's good to have a partner in the business seat! So best of luck to you two!!!)

I'm not far past 40 but also just recently started learning art in general. I'm much better with 3D and I can't really draw from imagination yet. But using references, I've been able to recreate pokemon in 3D and some characters that were 2D only in 3D. Initially, I thought, I'll use AI to generate the artwork for my games I want to develop, but I found that I'm very particular with the art and it still requires a lot of cleanup after and it takes just as much time, if not more than doing it from scratch. AI can be helpful for doing tedious tasks, but I agree that it can take away from learning and understanding depending on how it is used by the individuals.
@lucky-jacob14 күн бұрын
Two aspects I haven't even touched on are that AI results don't feel as earned and that they also don't meet my need for ... "self expression" might be the best word. It feels good to put in the work if something is personal to you.

Learning new skills is very good for your brain-age health. Even if you didnt show it on youtube, you would help your brain make better and stronger connections. So, to sum up: learning new skills while getting older = should be the gold standard, and make u happy. No sad allowed

@Mokrator15 күн бұрын
just use AI is also a great idea XD... ok AI can to very nice stories and fiction... Let an AI write scripts is especially stupid - yesterday i discussed with chatgpt why it wannted to tell me repeatedly that 512 is smaller than 64. It wanted to tell me that 8292 is a a power of 2 (which it basicly accepted after i reasoned that each next number is a power of 2 and accidental hat a typo while writing the numbers). My Test with GPT4 went like that yesterday and i hope it wont try to diagnose cancer on me. Even with obvious Errors AI does neither reject wrong statements nor did it ever create working code that does whatever it thinks the code would do - like hey this code outputs the numbers from one to ten, you run the code it does nothing or runs infinite - so you tell him and it says Oh i am soooo sorry you are right here is the corrected code that actually does the same thing. And we are not talking about some complex stuff we are talking about 3 variables and a simple loop.
@lucky-jacob14 күн бұрын
True, there is still a large gap between advertisment and the actual results. But we should assume that AI will meet this objective sooner rather than later.
@JorWat2515 күн бұрын
The BIT.TRIP games use a 4x4 font, though it's only upper case and digits (which are 3x4), and does make M and W 5 pixels wide. You can find some unofficial versions that add in lower case letters and punctuation.

In my own game, I'm having a similar issue. There is a certain charm to the smaller sprites. What I'll be doing is using the same sprite, but doubling it's size for the dialog scenes. That way I don't have to change the character in any way. I think this would work for you characters nicely. I will say, I personally liked the 21x21 pixel sprite you made and I think it fits.

i dont have a problem with the old a as much as i have with the lowercase e. the missing line at the bottom is really really distracting for me, and makes it a bit hard to read edit: i know it's hard to make it without doing the letter a pixel above, but the e just can't be like that for me :')
@lucky-jacob29 күн бұрын
Yeah, I get that. I literally had to cut some corners there. I recently saw a different approach for an 'e' in that size, which is basically just rotating the 'a' 180°. Works pretty well and fixes that issue.
