Drum corps shows are amazing. I love DCI. That is why I am so critical -- because I want more of the great stuff and less of the mediocre and bad, the underdone and the overdone, the merely imitative, the music slaw rather than the music, the inappropriate costumes rather than the ones that add to the effect, the props that clutter and litter the field, the incessant running around for no better reason than to avoid having to design a drill solution and a musical transition....

Hot take: the blue devils are only good because the competitive system has been established in such a way that the victors receive the greatest chance to succeed each year because they have access to the largest and most valuable talent pool in comparison to other corps. In other words, the best people go to the best corps because it’s where they’ll have the highest chance of being recognized for their talent. All thanks to the complex score politics game that judging has become nowadays.

Yep. But this is everywhere in life. All the most efficient musicians go to Juilliard or Curtis and thus the schools get a reputation for having the "best" school as a result. There is no way to avoid this except to not have DCI competition. I sont see what judging has to do with it. Also, some corps get bad reputations due to their nasty directors or staff, or negative incidents. Crusaders and Bluecoats don't have a clean reputation. It is marred by people who've had very bad experiences with disingenuous and cruel staff. I for one wouldn't send my son or daughter to Crusaders after some of the stuff I've heard.
