Hollow handle knife can be used to stick it into ground and insert inside monopod. I made it from titanium and carbon fiber so it's super light.

Great video Terry with some excellent points. One thing that I have found in using the masking instead of selecting subject I use object and paint over the bird or whatever you want to mask. It seems to work much better and doesn't include other things that you have too delete from the mask. Thanks for all the great tutorials.

Thanks Terry. Do you see any instances where visiting PS and using, say Hi-Pass, provides any further benefits??
@tv51017 сағат бұрын
No, not further benefits. That was the "old school" way of sharpening. The the new processes are much easier and faster and I think better results.

Thanks Terry for this very interesting subject. I never quite understood how to use sharpening before, but I constantly had issues with denoising and sharpening (APS-C!!!) wildlife photographs. I know about noise in shadows and sharpness in the subject, so it is a pity that you can't use the Alt-key to fine tune while masking. I had better results using Topaz products (Denoise AI & Sharpen AI/Photo AI) anyway, but it's so easy to oversharpen, or having denoise in the way of sharpening without artifacts. What is your opinion here? Is it important to remove default sharpening prior to do cropping and 'Basic' changes? Then a Preset might help. To crop towards the center of the image, you should use the Alt key to save time and accuracy.
@tv5104 күн бұрын
I also use Topaz for both sharpening and Denoise, but I do things a bit different. I plan to create a video on how I go about that soon. Thanks for watching.

I was waiting for something to finish, and started looking at this tone curve tutorial on my mobile. There are so many ways to adjust colours in LHR, I didn't expect to learn much from it. Boy, was I mistaken! Thanks for yet another use of masks, allowing me to better adjust colours of either subjects or backgrounds where necessary.

Thanks for your videos. I’ve watched the entire beginner to photoshop playlist which was very helpful to me in navigating PS (it’s brand new to me). I edit studio portrait photos, I still having some trouble in figuring out in what order I should do particular things. For example, I smooth the background by selecting the background then use Gaussian blur and add noise to match the subject, following that I use frequency separation to smoothe the subjects skin and maybe liquify. I can successfully do each of these tasks in isolation but I’m unable to do all 3 in one edit/image. I must be missing something. Any advice ?
@tv5104 күн бұрын
It sounds like a good plan, I do everything on separate layers. Using that combo layer shortcut to start a new layer that has all my work so far. I do end up with a quite a few layers. I am planing a portrait retouching video soon. That might help.

This is the first time I have actually been able to use the pen tool without frustration! Using the rough outline with the direct tool made all the difference ... and doing this way actually really helped get better at using the curves (or rubber band points as you describe them). As a photographer this is spot on!!

Hello again, Terry. Can you give some direction on how to create a shadow that blends and/or bends from horizontal to vertical, as if a wall is behind the subject?
@tv5105 күн бұрын
The transform tool is your key, as well as maybe you need to make two shadows, one that casts on the ground, and one on the wall. Blend them with a layer mask. Also, keep in mind how shadows work. The one on the ground will fade a bit, while the one on the wall will be much more defined. You can determine this by looking at the light and seeing how soft or sharp the shadow should be. Hope this helps.

Great video and some excellent comparisons. I also use the little square in the Detail panel and hover over part of the image that's important - such as the eye in your wood duck. It sometimes helps in getting the sliders set perfectly to one's liking. I also use Denoise AI before any processing so most of the noise is controlled before I start editing my images. I like your procedure Terry and it is pretty much the path that I follow. The thing I add and you did not discuss was the removal of noise. At what point in your editing do you remove the noise? I typically remove noise, if obvious, after the Basic panel adjustments and prior to sharpening.
@tv51010 күн бұрын
I have learned to do my noise reduction last. But if all goes well, I'll do a video on Noise Reduction soon and why I do it last.

Terry, the sharpening in the masking is just a addon to the sharpening in the details panel. This means it just adds amount to the sharpening which is set in the main-details panel to accentuate parts of the image. In fact, you do the sharpening as usual in the details panel, but leave the amount slider to a smaller value than usual, the start masking of the main part of the image and add amount of sharpening just to the main part of the image which is selected by the masking.
@tv51011 күн бұрын
Thanks for that clarification Robert.

I own Nikon Z8 and the 180-600mm. Never owned a prime because I like the versatility to compose on subject so I cannot compare. But I can tell you that IQ is Brilliant. I have photographed surfing sports events, birds, wildlife of the 4-legged kind and now recently airshows. This combo has not let me down. Super high keeper rate and I have yet to use 3d tracking. I have also pushed this lens to high ISO of 12,800-16,000, wide open and ss at 2000 for BIF was amazed at how little noise showed on the raw file and after post processing they were perfect. You zoom in and the detail was not washed away. I actually posted the pics elsewhere and was pleasantly surprised by all the likes. The only thing that concerns me is the weather sealing. I have used it in misty rain without issue and but never in a downpour which at that point I will put away and not push it.
