Alright, hell yeah. Me and a paddling friend have had this exact thought experiment about spare air in whitewater emergency situations. We basically came to the conclusion that it would probably be to difficult to get the spare air mouthpiece in your mouth if you were stuck swimming in a hole. If you're in a hole so strong that you can't swim out then it would be physically difficult to put the spare air mouthpiece in your mouth and it would be hard to keep it in to get a breath being stuck underwater in a whitewater hole. We couldn't even agree on at what point in the hole do you quit trying to swim out and devote precious seconds to stick the spare air regulator in your mouth. If you use your last few seconds of your air/breath to try to get the spare regulator in your mouth and it gets pulled out, you can't get it in or you mess up and breathe in water trying to use the spare air then you're probably in the worse case scenario. Someone being pinned underwater or stuck underwater in an entrapment could probably use spare air to prolong their life until other people could rescue. Someone has developed an air tank with a regulator attached to a mask (like a fighter pilot) for whitewater kayaking. They made a valve where you can breathe regular air with the respirator on and then a valve engages when you go underwater to turn on the air tank. It was on KZfaq but I forgot to save the video.

David, Do you always sit on wave side? Something I've been thinking about lately? Allows you to make use of the pry for angle right?
@r1-ing
@r1-ing 8 күн бұрын
Now that I have practices my offside paddling I do. The main reason is that sitting on only on the Left side for me makes it really difficult to move to the Right without being low sided. A kayaker will move surfers Left to Right across a wave by leaning right and ruddering with the right paddle. If instead in a kayak you leaned left and tried to sweep your left paddle the kayaker would probably tip over. So to get used to paddling on my offside I would try to sit more centered in my boat and still try to use my left paddle to forward stroke and sweep the boat right. Kayakers are easily able to do this. They can lean right and still paddle on the left side. As an R1 sitting centered is about the best we can do. I am still not able to move left to right on my offside sitting on top of the wave on the right side of my boat and have good control to bring the boat back around and center it back up. That is difficult for me.

Surfers on surf boards can surf a glassy wave because surfboards are fast and aerodynamic. They have very little drag. So the weight of the surfer and board down the wave will keep them in it. But for R1 there is a lot of drag on the boat that will pull the boat over the glassy wave. Every molecule of water underneath the boat is shearing against the boat and pulling it downstream. But any presence of whitewater at the top of a wave is the start of a pile but more importantly it indicates that the water underneath that white is either stationary (not moving downstream) or is actually moving down the wave. This water meets the incoming glassy water in an explosive collision where you see whitewater. But the take home point is that under that whitewater is water that is actually moving upstream and is gripping the boat and shearing and trying to "pull" it upstream. So a good analogy would be a glassy wave is a constant speed treadmill more or less. And a breaking wave is two treadmills that are opposing each other. But the take home point. Is that for small breaking waves. It is not necessarily the the white pile that is doing the stopping of the boat. I would say that it is the grippy water that is moving upstream that stops the boats momentum so quickly. Thinking about it. Even for massive wave holes that have a huge white pile. That is just an indication that behind that curtain of white is literally a downward waterfall. So when boating into that is going to bring the boat to a dead stop. Or when trying to paddle over a sticky hole would be like paddling up and over a vertical treadmill going the opposite direction. Thanks for the comment. I like thinking of this stuff! Especially when encountering small holes. I always think, "That doesn't look like much." and then get instantly flipped and am left wondering why?

You will be good to go! This KZfaqr does nothing but R1-ing in 9.5 Saturn. It doesn't have much rocker. But I flip all the time because my boat has too much rocker. So it is probably a great stable boat! If I ever saw one come up on craigslist I would buy one for myself! Have Fun!!

This was an absolute banger video and I loved it. I've known several close friends who have bouts of mania and they are never as coherent as you were in this video. You had some great points about a lot of topics in that video. I'm lucky enough to not suffer from any several mental health issues but I will get some pretty bad anxiety and don't feel mentally "all there" if I can't get enough sleep. I like how you explained how you keep track of your sleep in a journal.

The swim at 6:30 had trouble on re-entry because David was unable to get his legs extended into the water, due to current, preventing him from using technique to get the momentum he needs for the scoop up into the boat. If he was able to get around the boat he would have been able to get in on first attempt.

Would you take a Lynx II down this?
@r1-ing
@r1-ing Ай бұрын
Yes. There is plenty of time just hold onto your boat and wait out a rapid to get back in if you fall out. My advice is to paddle strong but be ok with "giving up" on your paddling to highside your IK by leaning way out over it. I use this technique a lot and even fall over and out of my raft on the highside but at least i am through the big wave and usually easily hanging on. Same for IK. Worst is to get dumped upriver into the trough for a quick flush. May not be able to hold onto your IK. And most all levels have fairly green lines to avoid taking hits you don't want to. You don't want to be too lacks because swimming 2 rapids in a row can cause flush drowning. But it is a really clean section of river. Feels like big class 4 with class 3 swims unless the cfs is juicing in the teens.
