Nice discussion of this film. I love it for its beauty, simplicity, and glimpses of French provincial life at the time, like the sea shanty singer and other minor characters. One can learn a lot about ways to interact with others from certain conversations in the film - such as Margot's deconstructions of Gaspard's behavior; she really tells it like it is, though kindly. Other favorites of mine are Claire's Knee, Pauline at the Beach, My Night at Maude's, and la Collectionneuse.

I think another theme is youth vs age and you often watch the older characters leech off the youth and vitality of the younger characters

I guess Paul Thomas Anderson, or just "Anderson", is too hard to say. Anyway, agreed. Magnolia is a masterpiece.

I just noticed that magnolia has 82% on rotten tomatoes. The number 82 appears several times and the main symbol of film.crazy...What if critics deliberately wrote bad reviews to get this number?)

Great video. I watched this film for the first time today. I didn’t get into it as much as some of Rohmer’s other films (My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend was one of my favourite watches of June) but, based on your video, I’ll revisit this one at some point. 👍

Back in 1999 I were 24 y.o. when the movie came out. I didn't had much patience at that age, and think I stopped the movie after a short period of time. And most of my life I haven't watch movies that has many life-stories that sometimes get in connection with each other. Often it sees (to me IMHO) those movies are a mess or confusing or both. But here at my 49 years of age, I stumbled into your video here at KZfaq. I really like then movie-fans are able to get in depth details about a movie. Plus with my age, I now have a bit more patience, and knowledge how people interact etc. So I should give it one more go. I stopped btw your video when the spoilers warning came. Thanks man. Regards from Krusty in Denmark. 🙂

Clu Gulager steals every scene he is in. Sexy, intriguing, says alot with just his eyes. Ben Johnson was flawless , as were Cloris, Eileen, and Ellen. I loved it all

A lovely critique of a favourite film. Difficult to know where to suggest a Rohmer beginner should start, but Conte d’été is as good as anywhere. I met Amanda Langlet twice, and his tiny crew of four. After seeing abut 25 of his films, your French will improve too!

The words 'heartfelt' and 'spiritual' keep coming up, from people who love this movie. Including me. 🌹 Why would anyone not love this film? Only because they don't care about heartfelt and spiritual. 🤷 Thank you for posting this paean of praise for one of the sweetest and most magical films ever. 💖

Only recently did I come across another short of this film that made me want to see it, so I rented it on Fandango at home. I haven't cried that much over a movie in a long time. I turned it off when they went over the hill, as I thought that was the end. Then came across another video on here that had the full ending, which was much better. The film is definitely underrated and that is a shame because Brad Pitt gave a wonderful performance! I watch every clip I find. Just can't get enough!

It's a perfect film, it's brilliant, it's Tom Cruise's best performance, it's many of the actor's best performances, the soundtrack is perfect. The first time I watched it I felt like I'd been beaten up, all these years later I still wonder what it all really means. Is the meaning of the film that things are just random, that there's no meaning to anything, that bad things happen and they damage you for your whole life but there's nothing you can do. Just amazing.

I'm a bit late to the party, but, nice review, you nailed it. I've never met anyone who didn't enjoy this film - that's saying something. May I offer a suggestion? I'd like to hear your take on a movie most people have never heard of, 1998's "Return to Paradise", starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vince Vaughn. This is a gem of a film and I wish more people were aware of it's existence. Please do not research it first, not even for the synopsis, just find a comfortable seat and enjoy it.

I didn't notice until the middle this movie was 3 hrs. It was okay. It didn't really grab me like I thought it would. I'm a millennial and I like to watch old films from when I was a kid or films I missed, like this one. I've never watched this one before. But it was okay overall in my opinion ⭐️⭐️⭐️ and a half ⭐️'s

i Wish PTA kept The Worm storyline in. Apparently The Worm is his pimp dad and it gets dark. I heard PTA cut it cuz it was too much. Supposed to be played by Michael Jace whos doing life for murder for real. (same reason PTA cut the brutal ending to Becky Barnett's character who marries Michael Jace in Boogie Nights. IN a deleted scene hes shown absolutely beating her savagely. He just wanted something to end happily)

Theres a shot....when Stanley and his dad get to the studio drenched from the rain. The camera follows them FOREVER. I still dont know how PTA achieved that one'r. Fake elevators and sliding walls on some Orson Welles stage-ish. Theres a few long takes here that rival Goodfellas' Copa entrance.

Wth?? I remember catching this movie on TV ages ago but somehow I got in on the middle and could not understand it at all. I thought the kid was treated bad and then when it started raining frogs I turned the channel thinking this was some retarded b-horror film (popular in those days with the genre)... For a moment I thought the frogs where going to start eating people with some graphic violence... I hated all horror films because a family down the street owned a video store and their degenerate teenage sons exposed me to horror movies when i was half their age (to young) and the movies gave me nightmares for months... idk. Never wanted to see this movie again BUT boredom led me across this film 20 years later. The raining frogs triggered the memory... Again i almost changed the channel from impulse...
