Fyi ... putting a long tip on a .0001" test indicator makes it read .0005" per mark.

*2:00** Is there a reason you didn't you a pecking operation?* Are you able to avoid deflection? Heating? Do you hone the deflection out?

*1:00** Might be a dumb question. Are you showing a single off for this video?* *I'd run a fixture with 20-25 billets in it and do them all at once.*

I have a question about barrel you did not speak about it. if the barrel made in smooth way without the curves or pattern inside it. does it increase the range or decrease it.

you make the curves inside the barrel. Is it take the shoulder depth only or the whole barrel .

Love the process, would be interested to hear your thoughts on torquing the action in during bedding versus using compression with elastic or other.

Does the stock Tikka T3x Lite come with pillars? What is the recommended torque spec on the action screws? Tikka manual says 45 or 62 in-lbs depending on if your stock is a plastic base vs metal base. 62 in-lbs sounds insanely high. I’ve heard people get best results between 35-40 in-lbs… after adjusting my trigger pull, I torqued my stock back on to roughly 37 in-lbs. Seems to be on secure and the magazine slides right in… not sure if I’m missing something.

i don't agree to torquing the 10 mm sockets, for a better bedding job no torque must be used.

I really don't understand how this can happen..... Its not like you put a 270 in a 30-06 or something else close to the intended round. It never fails to amaze me how stupid people in this world can be. What is most frustrating is that this guy has a 5-7 thousand dollar rifle and is that careless about it. Just goes to show, you don't have to be smart to have money

This customer is actually a really smart guy, engineering minded guy with a lot of shooting experience. The mistake was having open boxes of both cartridges on the bench, and reaching to grab another round to chamber without taking his face off the rifle. Grabbed a round from the wrong box and chambered it on autopilot.

Can youjust make a barrel with the reciever cut into it? No timing and no facing the parts in a lathe. Just one single barrel with reciever cut into it. I know you can't change barrels but how often does anyone do that anyway?

Brandon, Good information, with great explanations about why lot numbers mean so much to accuracy. It would be interesting if you pulled the bullets from 10 or so of each lot of cartridges and weighed the powder charges and the bullets. Also, when you hand load, what differences in velocities do you normally see with the same lot of powder, bullets and cases?
@allterraarms
@allterraarms 3 ай бұрын
We've sampled 10+ from a box/lot and the consistency isn't great. We like to see +/- 20 fps across various rifles with our AllTerra ammo. Handloading for an individual rifle +/- 10 fps is a good goal.

At 37:39 you can see one side of the lands is visible basically the length of the freebore. This is an indicator that your throat is NOT smooth and concentric. If you put your long stem indicator back in there at the freebore you will see uneven reaming and hopping.......it tends to get worse in 5R barrels too unless you are very careful and mitigate it accordingly.......just an FYI to you and others.

Thank you for showing your details. I am a professor and a 'hobby' gunsmith (mechanical engineering) with a decent home machine shop (high-end manual knee mill, lathe, etc...) who is learning from one of the best gunsmiths/shooters in the country. However, it is always nice to see how others do the same thing. Your method seems to be a combination of what Gordy Gritters and Speedy Gonzalez recommend - a hybrid of the two. Not sure why you use the range rod and then indicate the lands/grooves; probably you just want to get it close enough to make the actual indication easier. I just skip the range rod step and do my initial indication off the OD of the barrel. However, I turn my own barrel blanks, so I am pretty comfortable that the OD is fairly concentric with the bore. Still, as you note, the TRUE indication is off the lands and grooves (mostly grooves, as I have been taught). I also have the True Bore alignment system (which is what I think you are using). A question - do you have a spider on the muzzle end of the barrel? That has been my biggest challenge with the True Bore system - I use a spider on the muzzle side and the True Bore is so long that I can't chamber anything shorter than a 26" (finished) barrel (and that is 'just barely'). I am concerned with chatter if holding the barrel only with the True Bore system (despite the 6-jaw) and not using the spider.

It’s funny, I went to a chambering course with Bob Pastor (4 time F Class International Champion) and he said a lot of the things gunsmiths do is snake oil. Is he right? Who knows. He chambered all of his own barrels and he won a lot of matches though. If a garage gunsmith can chamber a barrel to shoot .5 MOA and this guy can chamber one to shoot .4 MOA, is it worth the extra time, money and effort? I guess that’s the decision people have to make.
