If you like logical thinking, there is actually a simple logic behind these words/duds (that means you can solve this hacking puzle without using these special characters). It's kind of fun sometimes, when you are not rushing things, but when you master it, even the hardest hacking terminals become easy as heck.

What, why does it work like this? I've played 500h of Fo4 and NV and never even guessed how it worked. I may be retarded but I truly don't remember any mention to this in any logs or tutorials in the games. Guess I can finally start putting intelligence points on my tree now

The duds are very handy. You can easily recognize them by any opening and closing bracket or lookalike symbol. The easiest to find them is by look for the closing ones. I forgot if the duds go across to the next line or not.

You should never ever ever do it like this! Use up all but 1 or 2 guesses, then start looking for the brackets. The brackets can also replenish your tries, but if you have all 4 tries you will only have duds removed

I find it's better to make all guesses but one, then do this process to remove duds because one of them will invariably reset your tries and that's pointless if you still the full amout of guesses left.

I forgot how I figured this out but it was relatively early on after I got Fallout 4 (My first fallout game) and I've pretty much always used it. I was playing Fallout 3 with my girlfriend at the time (Her favorite game) and I got down to one guess left so I started going through all the brackets and she had no idea it was a thing.

It's always crazy to me that people never knew this, I learned it from watching a guy play fallout 3 back in like 2016, and when I played fallout 4 never thought anything of it, but yeah it doesn't give a tutorial on that when you hack for the first time in game, it can also reset your tries, which is why you don't always want to find all of the parenthesis/brackets first, I got good enough in my fo4 playthrough that I rarely needed the help, but it can be super useful especially to people who are in a rush or just not super skilled

If you want to know whats happening, if you can ever find a fully closed parentheses on one line [ { < ( ) > } ] it'll either remove a fake one or if you're lucky reset the amount of tries left :)
