My great great uncle’s third cousin twice removed’s next door neighbor’s cat sitter’s 4th husband loved this song. He hasn’t passed away yet, nor does this song remind me of him. But I still love this song, too. I mean, independently.

My Mom loved Greensleeves and had a music songwriting book with the penciled in notes for guitar. She never really mentioned she played.

I have read a weir is a small dam across a stream or river. They are not always safe to swim or boat near. A salley garden is one where they grow thatch for roofs of cottages. I liked the song for a long time before I bothered to look up those two words. But I guess they do not matter so much.

My mother passed away suddenly this past August four days before her 56th wedding anniversary. She had such a beautiful singing voice and used to sing this as a lullaby to myself and my younger brother and sister. I remember her with a smile to this song and recently played it for my father, who immediately teared up. I went to stop the music and he asked me not to. He said it was like a message from Mum and a great comfort to him. God bless the mourners 💔

This song was originally written by Henry 8th of England for his second wife Anne Boleyn who was later executed for treason and incest but the real reason was because she never produced a male heir for the king. After Anne’s execution, every trace of her existence was removed- only this song and her portrait remain of her. King Henry went on to marry another 4 times after Anne.

I fell in love with this song and Loreena McKennit in 1997 when I randomly heard her in a shop for musical instruments. And I never fell out of this love. Meanwhile, I have listened to many versions of this song, but hers and the duet of Tim Foust and Peter Holland are my favorite ones.
